You are doing mean vs mean instead of mean vs normals correct ? What's that supposed to mean? The 1981-2010 mean is the same as the 1981-2010 normal, is it not? No, in the US NCEI adjusts normal against means for most stations to account for missing data and bias. For some places warmer, others colder. 1981-2010 normals for raleigh are .7 warmer than the means i think.

I think the official normals will come out sometime in 2021.

1991-2020 averages for Sula island (63Β°50'N, same placement whole period):
January mean: 3Β°C
February mean: 2.5Β°C Data for 1998 missing.
All January means above 0Β°C in this period. Coldest month Feb 2010 with mean -0.8Β°C 61-90 mean was 1.5Β°C for both Jan and Feb.
Iceland, you're at same latitude, can you match this?

Just out of curiosity I calculated the new January mean for Tafjord, innemost fjord village so a distance from the sea. Also a foehn location. Placement Tafjord and tempAvg high in Jan might therefore be more interesting, but anyway: 1991-2020 January mean is 1.9Β°C (1.88).
61-90 mean was 0.5Β°C
Also calculated the July avg high for 1991-2019: 20.1Β°C (20.14)
The 61-90 avg high was 18.5Β°C

Wanted to check the new January normal for RΓΈros, but available data lacking in database.
Was good data for DrevsjΓΈ, a village in an inland municipality just S of RΓΈros, in a valley at 672 m ASL. Minimal if any UHI, and station at same place. Also one of the coldest winters in Southern Norway. The 1991-2020 January mean for DrevsjΓΈ: -8.8C (-8.78). Data for 2005 lacking so 29 years. The 61-90 mean was -11.5C. Warming:2.7C - very substantial.
Bergen summers: 1991-2019 avg July high for Bergen (12 m): 19.7C (19.71).
The 1961-90 normal July avg high: 17.6C Warming: 2.1C. Strong warming for avg high. July 2020 lacking for the new normal. 30C+ days used to be very rare in Bergen summers, but are recorded more often latest decades. This station has some UHI.

Some were unhappy about Turku's normals compared to earlier reference periods as they're from three different stations, so here's Helsinki Airport which hasn't changed location since its inauguration. It also has public sunshine stats, but as now I only have them from 1999 onwards. I will get them before the year is over, don't worry.
NOTE, ALL MEAN TEMPS ARE HI+LO/2, NOT FMI'S MEASUREMENTS WHICH MIGHT DIFFER
Change from 81-10, Jan to Mar:
High: +0.8C, +0.7C, +0.7C
Mean: +0.8C, +0.6C, +0.4C
Low: +0.8C, +0.6C, +0.3C
Precipitation: -1mm, -5mm, -2mm
Sunshine: 95%, 88%, 118%
Change from 61-90,
High: +2.5C, +1.7C, +1.7C Mean: +2.7C, +1.8C, +1.6C Low: +3.0C, +2.0C, +1.5C Precipitation: +12mm, +9mm, +1mm Sunshine: 92%, 90%, +117%
Record highs recorded: 2007, 1998, 2007 Record lows recorded: 2003, 2011, 2013

Change in July highs have been 1.7C for Turku and 1.8C for Helsinki Airport.
Interesting are the June highs, which currently stands with -0.3C for Turku and -0.2C for Helsinki.

January warming 2.7C from 61-90 to 91-2020 is very substantial. Also the other to months show strong warming as well, no wonder river and lake ice melts earlier, frozen soil melts earlier, spring getting warmer, etc.

I guess the most important reason is that the Gulf of Finland doesn't freeze as early anymore, or at all. This is evident in that during the 61-90 normals January was the coldest month in Helsinki, but in 81-10 and 91-20 it was February. About frozen soils, so far the average low in April at Helsinki A is just 1C warmer than during the 61-90 normals.

How much has the Apr mean warmed?
Also, a milder winter (if at least as much snow/not more cold periods on bare ground) means less depth of frozen soil, so nature has a "memory" of a cold winter.

+1.4C, so it's roughly in line with March. May +0.8C. The further towards summer you go, the smaller the difference gets.
