This thread is for a discussion of all things hail-related. My first question is: how often have you seen hail? And I'll also ask what the biggest hail you've seen is. I've seen hail five or six times in my life. The biggest hail I've seen was about 1" (2.5 cm), but I didn't think to measure it, so I could be off on that.

I love hail. Happens 1-2 times a year here but I wish it was much more.

Small hail once or twice a year or so, medium or a decent hail shower probably happens once every 1-2 years.

Hail showers are not uncommon here. I'd say 10-15 times a year, but large hail would happen once every 5-10 years or something like that.

5+ times a year. The biggest hail I've seen was only about 1cm across, though parts of Surrey have seen cricket ball sized hail before.

5+ times a year I'd say. Usually really small, but it can be huge. Two years ago we had some very large hail, with some of it probably about the size of a tennis ball.
*I've revised mine to 5+. We had hail twice yesterday alone, so probably get it more than I initially realised.

5+ times a year for me, big damaging hail is unusual but squally showers with hail mixed in are pretty standard for polar maritime NW airflows in spring.

About once a year, if that, and pretty much confined to small hail/graupel.

Number of days 1981-2010 of various weather events at Frankfurt Airport. About one hail event each year, few of them in spring and autumn as they are either from cold fronts in winter or from thunderstorms in summer.
Same chart for Aachen:

The UK saw between 6-28 hail days per year between 1981-2010, with an average of 15 days. June and July have the highest frequency. The Torro Hail Scale: www.torro.org.uk/hscale.php

About once a year, if that, and pretty much confined to small hail/graupel. Wait, I assumed this thread was about hail from a thunderstorm not graupel.
If we are including graupel, its probably 5x a year at least. Thunderstorm hail is not that common here.

The hail days frequency tracks the thunderstorm days frequency pretty much. Most thunderstorms in the UK also produce hail.
I can only recall seeing graupel once, in April 2016.

It was supposed to be about thunderstorm hail. But graupel isn't that common in Oklahoma so it doesn't change my vote in the poll.

How do they measure for black ice? Surely they don't look at the pavement every morning.

I think they do, those are manned stations.
