The shoutbox is fun, but one of the benefits of regular posting is that it archives some great discussions, whether it was friendly banter, weather, or other topics. They're fun to look back on. I also like reading threads at my own pace and have trouble keeping up with the shoutbox. It gets exhausting and distracting after a while. Just my two cents. The shoutbox allows you to write outrageous things that soon will be gone, enticing a much funnier debate climate. I wouldn't post half the shit I post there in any threads. If you don't like it, simply don't use it Come on lommie, this isn't snapchat. Have some backbone and post your true thoughts.

Come on lommie, this isn't snapchat. Have some backbone and post your true thoughts. Easy to say when you don't live in a country whose leaders worship East Germany

Did they? Looked more like a Pyrrhic victory for the Ruskies tbh. In my opinion they won for the simple reason that Finland wasn't forced to join either the Soviet Union or be behind the Iron Curtain. In the same way it'd be hard to say that the North Vietnames didn't suffer more casualties than the Americans, but no-one claims they didn't win because they took control of the country etc.

Could have been much worse. Definitely a Russian phyyric victory, although the lessons the Soviet Union learned from the war, and the resultant military reforms arguably saved it for being defeat by Germany during Barbarossa.

'Lost the war, retained our independence' is well-accepted history writing in Finland.

Hmm, not really the result I wanted here - 6 want to keep the shoutbox as it is, 5 want to see less of it in one way or another and 46 don't care about it enough to vote.
What we'll do is I'll switch the shoutbox off on Mondays and Tuesdays until further notice starting tomorrow morning my time, and we'll see if it stimulates the chat threads a bit more.

It's worth trialing it just to see the results. Then perhaps we can have another vote in the near future?

Yeah, I was thinking try it like that for a month and see how it goes. Hopefully by that time we'll have more people with an opinion on the matter either way as well.

But... the shoutbox won? Boycott tomorrow evening from me then 6-4-1 the final score and the "one" vote wins???

I wanted the shoutbox to be open all the time as well, but it's worth a try at least to see what kind of a difference it makes when it's not around.

Perhaps turn it off completely for 3/4 days this week, and then ask people what they think? I dare say most will miss it more than they'd expected.

Well then you could say "no one" won the US presidential election because the largest proportion didn't vote? I like both, but the shoutbox is what positively separates this place from Shitty-Data. If people don't want it, don't use it. Simple as.

The shout box is okay, but it's not what brings people here.

Before when Yac-ass became involved this summer I felt that forum was normally moderated and quite fine. The shoutbox is what enables you to have a Facebook-like conversations. That's a tremendous thing for me.
