We've had a few people complain that they miss out on a lot of the action in the shoutbox because they can't be online enough, or that it has too big an impact on the chat threads or it's most active while they're asleep etc, so I thought I'd start a poll and see what people think.
Personally I think the shoutbox is one of the biggest advantages this forum has over City-Data because it's more easily accessible than any chat thread can be, and because you know only about ten people might ever read what you write in it before the messages get lost you get that extra level of privacy, and so conversations sometimes happen there that would never happen in a chat thread where posts stay forever.
I'll be voting for the first option, but I certainly get the argument that the chat threads suffer because of it and people can easily miss out on stuff, so I could easily be persuaded to experiment with shoutbox-free days if there's enough demand for them. One other bad thing about the shoutbox is that it's amazingly distractive because it can be so fast-paced, I can't be the only person to have this site on in the background when I'm trying to get work done who keeps refreshing it every couple of minutes so I don't miss anything, so sometimes it would be a relief if the shoutbox wasn't there.
I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts in any case.

Lol care to give a reason why? Drains away from actual discussion in threads. I hope it gets AIDS.

It takes away from discussion on threads and because you can't scroll up, I miss a whole lot that goes on and can't get to where a certain conversation started to tell what it's about. Also, it gets completely burried after not much talk.

Maybe schedule specific times at which it can be open?

I like the chat box as it offers casual discussion at a moments notice, but yeah you do miss out on a lot. It can also be confusing who's replying to who when it's busy. Most of the stuff in the chat box can be in the chat thread and you won't miss anything. The chat box is good if you're drunk and you said some bad, bad shit, you don't have to wait long before it disappears. Although I think there is no time limit on deleting forum posts. Speaking of chat boxes, the Australian Weather Forum had one when it first opened. One night I got drunk and trolled the shit out of it, they took it down after that

Maybe schedule specific times at which it can be open? The problem with that is whichever times we used would be unfair towards certain members depending on which timezone they live in, i.e. it would only be closed when they wanted to use it the most. Plus I'd have to keep remembering to switch it on and off all the time lol. If this vote ends up really close I think shoutbox-free day(s) every week are the best compromise and we'll just see how it goes.

Let's not go and be fun police: if you don't like the shoutbox, ignore it ffs Do people want us to become Shitty-Data or what? I use my veto. The shoutbox shall remain open. It's a gubburmunt order.

I voted yes to keeping it open. It has its flaws but it's good for casual conversation, not to mention for warnings of potentially hilarious troll attacks.

I like the shoutbox. The accessibility of it is appealing.

I like the shoutbox, it's great, but I feel it takes all the energy and attention for posting in the actual threads instead. Like yesterday, I was gone all evening and when I logged on here there waere like 15 new posts in the threads. No doubt that the shoutbox was wild all evening. Alas, as the shoutbox's backlog is like 0.1 minutes, I didn't have any idea that ghost-likin had ratted galaxyman's c-d account to the mods. I specifically had to ask what's going on. Surely all who were online then knew about it.
And I enjoy reading backlogs with my morning coffee. I can't do that when there's nothing in the threads and all the good stuff was posted in the chatbox, but has now descended to the cyberspace oblivion.
IDK, maybe we will grow tired of the shoutbox eventually and the situation will balance out. Or maybe have the shoutbox open only on weekends? Or create some gentleman's agreement that the shoutbox is only for casual banter, and we keep all weather and other interesting topics only in the threads?

Keep it. It's one of the best features of the forum, sure you miss out on stuff if you are offline, but surely that gives you an incentive to be on here as often as possible? Also some stuff said you wouldn't want to be kept in a thread lol

I guess it's just like regular conversation in real life. Things we say are only heard by those around us, and aren't archived for the rest of time. Thank God.
That being said, when you haven't been on here for a while it's nice to sit down and go through all the conversations that have taken place. This place is pretty poor for that, quite often there's not all that much to read when I log in.

Many times over on C-D during mornings European time it's been deader than at a graveyard. I much rather at least have a chance to say g'day to the Aussies at that time

The shoutbox is fun, but one of the benefits of regular posting is that it archives some great discussions, whether it was friendly banter, weather, or other topics. They're fun to look back on. I also like reading threads at my own pace and have trouble keeping up with the shoutbox. It gets exhausting and distracting after a while. Just my two cents.

The shoutbox allows you to write outrageous things that soon will be gone, enticing a much funnier debate climate. I wouldn't post half the shit I post there in any threads. If you don't like it, simply don't use it

Whoever voted the middle option should switch their vote to the bottom one!
