No need to hope for a piece of the polar vortex to come and visit us my fellow European and American friends. We all know where's the action at this winter. Innit Giorbanguly ? Just look at this chart for Beijing. Fuck that shit, -30°C @ 850 hPa @ 40N is preposterous. Jinan and Shanghai have a shot to break their all time record lows on Friday morning. Pretty epic.

You know how summer in Melbourne is just London with 10 hot days thrown in?
Winter in Portland is basically lowland northern California without the occasional warm (high 60s / low 70s) day and with an Arctic air event thrown in every 3-4 years.

Looks like Jeju, Fukuoka, Kagoshima, and other places in that area (around 33N) will be getting some decent snowfall over the next few days. Before Vancouver at 49N. Even Taipei's forecast is cold with highs below 10C and rain.

nei is ocean-effect snow common in Massachusetts? I wouldn't think so. Benfxmth I think you mean 0'C not 0'F; it would be freaky if lowland Philippines and Thailand were below freezing!

I do mean 0 degrees Fahrenheit 850 hPa (i.e. the 5,000 foot level) temperatures at 31-32°N, the 0°C 850 hPa isotherm seems to be reaching down to 24°N; HK seems to be getting highs around 55°F with the cold snap.

Oh. Clearly East Asian geography isn't my strong suit; pardon my ignorance!

Quite common if the wind blows from the NNE. Cold maritime air always leads to snow in winter. The problematic snow mostly comes from nor’easters though.

We had freezing rain this morning, which is fairly uncommon here. It was around -4C and raining when I left for work and I had to scrape a layer of clear ice of all the windows of my car. Surprisingly, the roads weren't really that bad (though some of the highways surrounding the city were pretty treacherous from what I heard). Still, I'm not a fan of precipitation when it's cold. In other news, the first signs of lengthening days are now visible! As I was on my way to get some groceries after work this evening I happened to notice the time right at 5:00 and saw that there was still visible sunlight at the tops of the buildings and trees (for reference, our earliest sunset time is 4:54pm). And then as I was heading home from picking up groceries at 5:30 the sky to the west was still nice and bright. Another month or so and the days will finally be nearing a decent length again

Nice here today again, 51 F (10.6 C) low at both reporting stations, heading up to 73 F (22.8 C) today.
Tonight won't be nearly as cool as last night. But we have another potent cold front coming Friday night, and Saturday should be quite nice with 69/45 (20.6/7.2) predicted.
