Two all-time highs beaten today in Argentina:
- Maquinchao 38.9°C (previous record 38.0°C in 1944) - Cipolletti 43.8°C (previous record 43.0°C in 1980)
Both towns are located in Río Negro province, in Northern Patagonia. Very nice figures in the area, including 41.4°C in Neuquén and 32.7°C in Bariloche. Today's highs in Northern Patagonia / Dry pampas. I must say that the Cipolletti maximum (and all-time high) looks a bit too high compared to the surrounding areas...

It reached 40.2C, first time it exceeded 40C this crummer, and the first time since Nov 28. Let's just have a moment of reflection to appreciate the significance of not reaching 40C for two (2) months in mid summer at 34*S in inland Australia at the edge of the world's second largest subtropical desert.

This swirling image of the polar vortex was made possible by data from several different polar-orbiting satellites between Dec. 3, 2020 and Jan. 16, 2021. The imagery was created using the information from the ATOVS data processing system aboard the NOAA-19 satellite, along with Europe’s MetOP-1 and -2 satellites, which host a NOAA instrument called the High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS).

Nordanbäck, the closest station to Umeå to have reported snow depth today, 45km WSW away at 180m ASL, has recorded 181mm precipitation this January so far, every single bit of it falling as snow. Since December 26th this figure has been 243mm The snow has only increased about 20cm since Jan 13th though, despite over 70mm precipitation falling since, indicating that the snow gets compressed by the wind almost as quickly as the snow accumulates. Also the snow depth gets tricky to measure with the snow drifting all over the place.

Right, as of 11:50pm, Renmark has reached the forecast low of 24C. Even my humidity UHI PWS is down to 25.1C. There is still 7 hours of frost hollow cooling to go. Concurrent temps everywhere else are as follows: Adelaide: 32.4C Port Augusta: 34.6C Mildura: 27.0C Walpeup: 28.8C Swan Hill: 24.5C Buttsecks Hill: 30.4C Hay Gays: 23.4C fake news It should be noted that earlier I was joking with jgtheone that my low will be 18C while Adelaide will have 30C and everywhere else be well over 20C. I was only taking the piss, I did not realise the fuck up I would cause.

NOAA's outlook for Feb - Apr. I'm thinking it could be an active tornado season for the inland South into the Lower Midwest. Shows drought developing in the Southeast.

Low 1.9C and high 4.3C in Riga today. Snow cover has gone down from 13 to 8 cm.
We went from 26 cm to 17 cm. It's disgustingly slippery outside.

To be fair, even I as a hot-weather lover would prefer snowy weather to, say, 40°F weather with slate-gray overcast skies, though I agree that thawing & refreezing is shitty, especially when it results in an icy mess. But again, each to their own.

coldest day of the winter so far (maybe December got a colder day but don't think so). Average high in Concord, NH (central New Hampshire) so far this month has been 37°F, Islip, Long Island 43°F. Sharper difference right now more details mins, cold night up north windy 15 mph, gusting to 25 mph. last Sunday was as windy but a high of 45°F. Wind chill warmings up in Vermont Greenfield, midday in the mid 20s. well below average but not rare most winters, temperature barely rose in the morning

I also agree, snow cover is much better than bare ground in the winter. Thawing and refreezing is shitty, better to not thaw . Snow turns ugly fast in city areas but in a park or rural area it's beautiful. The fix for ugly snow is more snow. Ugly: wxguys.ssec.wisc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/5691c575a6b2d.image_.jpgNot ugly: mnprairieroots.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/winter-in-minnesota.jpgI get enough 40F overcast days in fall and spring. A mild winter month like this past December is not warm enough to be enjoyable and feels like another November. Slightly above freezing is worse than slightly below for me. If it was milder without freeze-thaw I might enjoy it more (10/0 or similar temps). 6/-2 is record warm for a winter month but still feels cold. Cold days are more likely to be sunny here which helps make them feel less cold.

Even in cold winters, the Queen Charlotte islands are disgustingly mild for the latitude. Probably a good place for development of early human civilization though. Very tame climate.

Seasonably warm winter day here today, currently 80 F (26.7 C) and sunny with a breeze. This isn't bad weather.......for early June. Dews are in the 50s outside so it doesn't feel disgustingly warm at least.
TWC tamed down next week's warmth a bit, but it's still showing two 30 C days in a row for Tuesday and Wednesday.
