Loads of mentions about Cold snaps and I'm sure the UK too is experiencing its coldest winter since the early 2010's Possibly due to solar minimum?

Loads of mentions about Cold snaps and I'm sure the UK too is experiencing its coldest winter since the early 2010's Possibly due to solar minimum? Really? I noticed that often in late Jan it was much warmer here than further north, but still I'm I'm surprised. Though then again the past few winters have been atrociously mild. Here the impressive streak of abive average months goes on. The last below average month was May 2019.

Mmh the 18z GFS joins the ECMWF, with colder temps. Long term it looks like a Scandi high, the southwesterlies staying off the coast. Very good run, it most likely won't be as idyllic but it's nice to see. Quite far out so it has time to change to the shitfest it was forecasting in its last runs! Look at these heights under the 1030 hPa over southern Poland: Yeah that's right the airmass is damn cold over there. Closer to us, here are the midday temps on Thursday. Pretty nippy in Germany and the Netherlands lol. Frustrating to say the least... 2 m temp forecasts don't mean much this far out but no doubt it'd be cold if the weekend forecast panned out:

It would take an act of God to get midday temps of -10C here.

It would take an act of God to get midday temps of -10C here. The Midlands got that in December 2010 no? Last time here was on New Year 1997. The windchill was -21 at 10 am and -18 at 1 pm. Nice way to begin a new year.

And probably never will.

I think in general you’d only see highs that low at frost hollow stations, under freezing fog with calm winds.
Paris is without a doubt more prone to severe cold. That’s the difference between being on an island vs a continental landmass though.

Always disappointing how quickly snow melts here. There are already some bare spots on the ground. Mostly still snow covered, though.

Yo the GFS doesn't have us going above freezing from hour 84 on Monday night to hour 384 at the end of the run. That would be 12.5 whole days below freezing! Granted the forecast is likely to change, and those are just temps every six hours, but still, that is incredible cold for February at 35°N. It also gives us 30" (76 cm) of snow, which ain't happening.
Here's a GIF of the temperature forecast:

The cold has arrived, -36C with a -48C windchill this morning. Today also marks two years since we hit -42.5C, which had been our first time dropping below -40 since 2009. We have a forecast low of -38C for Sunday night (and it had been downgraded to -39C at one point) so perhaps there's a chance we could hit -40 this year.

Models aren't looking as good right now for potential Deep South snow event late next week. I hope the latest Euro run is wrong - shows temps around 60F next weekend.
