I think the GFS is overestimating the cold, as we've never had consecutive days staying below 10°F.
What's up with that urban planning? Why are there high-rise apartments like 3 m behind detached houses?

^ how much snow has umea got this winter? SMHI doesn't measure snowfall, only snow depth. Umeå reached a maximum of 75cm, record for any month is 97cm. Vännäs, just 15km inland at 100m ASL got a 126cm snow depth. 122cm for Tavelsjö (where I used to live for a couple years), 30km NW of Umeå.

rozenn The developer probably tried (and failed) to buy the adjacent land. Why the city would allow such a ugly arrangement, I have no idea.

Quite the cold front in coastal Ukraine. Time for a Lommie-style smilie. rozenn The developer probably tried (and failed) to buy the adjacent land. Why the city would allow such a ugly arrangement, I have no idea. You tagged the wrong guy! It's fun to see from an outsiders perspective but I'd be mighty pissed if I owned one of these houses. And I hope the apartments on the first 2-3 floors are cheap!

Absurdly cold in Saskatoon this evening. -27C with a windchill of -43C, and that's pretty much how it's been this whole afternoon. Prior to today I don't think I've ever seen air temperatures in the -20s with windchills in the -40s. Just ridiculous.
I needed to fill up my car after work and decided to pump it myself for the fun of it, and well... less than 30 seconds for all exposed skin to go almost completely numb in that wind. Just nasty. And of course it's rather difficult to get your wallet out of your pocket, get your card out of your wallet, insert it, and enter your PIN with thick gloves on, so the gloves had to come off for a bit. But just those few seconds was enough to almost turn my fingers into icicles.
Also the first pump I tried the screen basically didn't work because of the cold, so after several attempts at fumbling with it and standing around trying to figure out what was going on, I jumped back in my car and warmed up in there for a bit, then had to reposition to a different pump and do that process all over again. My face had turned noticeably red by the end of it, another minute or two of that and I'd straight up look like a tomato LOL.

Bit too windy for the forecast low here (and there?) last night to materialize Morningrise -40.4C Saskatoon (Forecast -41) -35.4C Winnipeg (forecast -37) Looks like our second -40 in a row, then. Interesting coincidences with these dates too - the last time we hit -40 was in 2019, also twice in a row on almost exactly the same dates (Feb. 6th and 7th that year, versus 7th and 8th this year).

Just looking at the temp stats for Medicine hat, Lethbridge etc. it doesn't look too bad, but while there's never any wind below -15'C here, those places in NA can get some serious winds at any temperature.

Yeah that sounds like the biggest difference between deep cold in eastern/northern Europe and North America. The latter can get nasty wind that adds to the cold. Btw thanks for sharing Morningrise, always interesting to read what life is about when it's that cold out!

Models playing with my nerves for tomorrow night's snow. Paris is so close to getting fuck all! Getting a layer is important as it might pave the way for interesting lows where it's substantial, as that UKMO run I posted earlier shows.

I've experienced 0°F with 20+ mph winds locally (was very uncomfortable but exposed skin could handle 30 seconds) but never that cold. coldest wind chill I remember locally. friends had an outdoor bonfire and bbq that didn't last that long outside mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/sites/obhistory.php?network=MA_ASOS&station=CEF&year=2015&month=02&day=15Mount Washington had a -54°F windchill this morning; impressive a populated place like yours can match Mount Washington mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/sites/obhistory.php?network=NH_ASOS&station=MWN&year=2021&month=02&day=08

Past 3 GFS runs have shown me getting down to the low teens next week and some snowfall! The Euro doesn't look as impressive, but better today than it was the past couple of days.

^Likewise here: –3.4° C for maxes and –1.6° C for mins.
At this point, I might as well root for some proper frontal activity—I'm done with "summer".

After nearly three months without rain Bangkok got hit hard today with central sites recording over 80 mm this afternoon. Just a brief spell of light rain here though.
