February 7th had a high of -30.4C, a very rare occurrence here. I'm actually not sure when the last time we had a high that cold was. Even the most extreme cold snaps from recent years had the coldest highs bottoming out around -27C or so, -30C is quite exceptional.
Btw thanks for sharing Morningrise , always interesting to read what life is about when it's that cold out!Yeah, the wind is absolutely brutal and makes all the difference when it's cold. Given any particular temperature with a strong wind, going 10 degrees colder without that wind will be much more pleasant.
February 2019 was historically cold for us (most anomalously cold month in my lifetime) but the air was quite still and stable, and I was literally much more comfortable spending 10 minutes outside in the -30s (and -40 twice) in the morning, walking to the bus stop and waiting for the bus, than spending one single minute outside yesterday in the -20s with that kind of howling wind. Or a couple winters ago we had a day around 0C with a fierce wind and ice pellets raining down on us, then the next day was around -20C and perfectly still, and that was far more pleasant. I have numerous such examples from my many winters in this province.
Thankfully we don't get a lot of howling wind at -27C like we did yesterday (at least not to that extent), but when it's above -20C we definitely get our fair share and it's never fun.

sounds unhikeable; def will avoid mountain hikes for anything close to that combo after reading your story. I've experienced 0°F with 20+ mph winds locally (was very uncomfortable but exposed skin could handle 30 seconds) but never that cold. coldest wind chill I remember locally. friends had an outdoor bonfire and bbq that didn't last that long outside

Mount Washington had a -54°F windchill this morning; impressive a populated place like yours can match Mount Washington
mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/sites/obhistory.php?network=NH_ASOS&station=MWN&year=2021&month=02&day=08Yeah, these sorts of windchills are not just uncomfortable, they're straight up dangerous if you're not prepared for them. Frostbite in minutes, hypothermia not too long after. Very extreme stuff, and not worth venturing out in for any extended period of time.
That's the part that puts me off the NA prairies the most. Just looking at the temp stats for Medicine hat, Lethbridge etc. it doesn't look too bad, but while there's never any wind below -15'C here, those places in NA can get some serious winds at any temperature.
Yeah that sounds like the biggest difference between deep cold in eastern/northern Europe and North America. The latter can get nasty wind that adds to the cold.
