strange that 29Β°F gets a cold icon after being warmer than previous days. The local newspaper has "Very cold" or "Frigid" every day in the forecast lately. The same warning for a 25/15 day and a 0/-10 day makes no sense since 25/15 is not far from average.

Houston's main airport is KIAH, which got down to 13. I think Corpus Christi and Galveston were also really impressive yesterday. They failed to get above freezing despite being immediately adjacent to Gulf waters with SSTs around 60F. Then they had morning lows of 19 and 20, resp.

11C and sunny right now, warmest day so far this month. Nearly an inch of rain earlier (24mm).
βSnowpackβ has taken a huge beating and is half gone.

It was -18C when I got off work this evening, and it's amazing how such a cold temperature can feel so relatively mild after an intense cold snap like we've had the past 10 days. This is an effect I notice every winter after a serious cold period. Next couple days are similar to today (-16C highs for both), and then on Friday we're hitting -5C and then rising above that on the weekend, including our first above-freezing temperatures since January 20th! Ahh, that's gonna feel nice

Well the ice storm didn't amount to much but it was still icy this morning. Crazy thing is it got up to 50 F/10 C today which is the mildest day since December 25th when we reached 64 F/18 C. On to yet another storm for Thursday and Friday:

Never got to the single digits as had been forecast last night. Low was 11F. Got up to 32F this afternoon and hasn't been above freezing since Saturday.
Under a winter storm warning for what looks like will be a freezing rain event tomorrow. May get some sleet also, but not not expecting snow. Forecast to get up to 35F tomorrow but if it stays a few degrees cooler than that, the event would be more impactful.
Didn't lose power with the first round of wintry weather, but power outages look more likely with the one coming.

After this cold snap, I have decided that an apparent temperature of about -10Β°F (-23Β°C) is the limit of my cold tolerance, given clothing I currently own. With the facemask I have that's better at not fogging up my glasses, I could maybe lower that to -15 or -20Β°F (-26 to -29Β°C), but either way, it's somewhere in there. So the Canadian prairies are out in terms of places to live (not that I was considering them anyway), and even Minnesota is probably a bit too cold. But today it was 10Β°F (-12Β°C) with light wind, and it didn't feel too bad.
I'm considering making my dream climate a few degrees colder in winter, but I'm just not sure if I'd lose interest in snow if I lived in a place with a semi-permanent winter snowpack. On the other had, we have about six inches of snow on the ground now with more coming down, and it's just so pure and beautiful. I'm sad we'll be seeing bare ground again by the weekend.
I was outside last night in -7Β°F (-21.5Β°C) weather, and it was very cold, but tolerable. The wind was calm, which made it okay.

For mountain hiking, I warm up while moving but also want a cushion for safety, ideally -10*F wind chill at coldest except for brief periods at the summit.

not too often Houston is colder than Mount Washington weirdly flat temperature profile, mild and wet air mass. Providence Rhode Island reached 54Β°F, thick clouds prevented any warm up here

This is an effect I notice every winter after a serious cold period. I felt the same thing here although what feels mild to you is the coldest high of our cold snap. Today got to 40 (4 c) and felt quite warm, no wind too which helped. Today was the first above freezing temp since last Sunday (2/7). 8 straight ice days is the longest such streak since 1985!

surface temperatures around noon time today; coldest Texas temperatures in maybe over a 100 years? weird inversion (different date, but same pattern today) 850 mb above freezing over southern Texas current GFS sounding over Houston is a crazy strong inversion. why is it so stuck!? no topography. usually we get those from warm fronts after very cold air, not in the middle of an arctic air outbreak

Meanwhile, New Orleans could be seeing severe weather tomorrow with a high of 61F. Quite different from central/north LA.
