I saw light pillars and diamond dust for the first time ever in the past couple nights, so that was pretty cool. The light pillars were faint, but I got a picture of them I'll put in the thread later. surface temperatures around noon time today; coldest Texas temperatures in maybe over a 100 years? current GFS sounding over Houston is a crazy strong inversion. why is it so stuck!? no topography. usually we get those from warm fronts after very cold air, not in the middle of an arctic air outbreak Minor comment: 1300 UTC is 7 am Central, not noon. I think the inversion is stuck because the cold front was shallow. Why it was shallow I'm not sure.

Unbelievable. Today it was a whopping 29C by 9am, bought back memories of summers of yore. That warm breeze was very weird, as it was a novelty after all the cold mornings this Fuckuary and crummer in general. I'm so corrupted, that I have been conditioned to believe that all the 17-18C temps at 9am are now normal, when infact, it is abnormal. Today gave me an alien memory wipe. The real mornings of summers past came flooding back. While the low ofcourse fell below forecast, it was actually summer-like at sunrise and the high today was 37.4C While this 5-day period of warmth is most welcome, the Fuckuary will soon return to its true form very soon with extremely cold nights and mornings once again with hurricane force southerlies with lame 5C+ below avg highs. But, words are just words. As they say, a picture is worth a 1000 words. Check out the extraordinary cold mornings this Fuckuary. The mtd avg high is also over 2C below avg for good measure.

Handsome hiver atmosphere in Athens with some fresh snow: scaffolding ruins the look; didn't know Greece was that cold
Very cold indeed. In the centre the high was only 1.7C yesterday, and the far northern suburbs had an ice day with a -0.3C high. Normal high is around 14C.

Had some freezing rain today, but not as severe as anticipated. Temp was around 32F when the heaviest rainfall was falling; if it was a bit cooler it could have been worse. There were some power outages, but my power just flashed once. Some roofs were leaking today as the rain was falling on top of the sleet accumulation. A neighbor's metal awning collapsed.

Tomorrow appears to be our last seriously cold day for at least a week - high of -18C, low of -23C. Friday will be more than 10C warmer than that, and then we have several days right around the freezing mark with lows above -10C. The 14-day forecast shows temperatures returning to slightly below average for a few days after that (but nothing compared to the cold spell we've just had) and then rising up again.
This is the third winter out of the past four where February was by far the coldest month of the season. Along with that pattern, we've also had two of the past three springs that were well below average with wintery blasts persisting into mid-April. Hopefully this spring will be a mild one and not become a third cold one out of four.

We got above 20°F (-7°C) today for the first time since February 8. On Friday or Saturday, we should go above freezing for the first time since then. There were a few flurries today, but they didn't amount to anything. We still have a 6 inch (15 cm) snowpack, which is quite nice. I wish it could stick around for a few weeks. Depending on how much sun we get, we could start to see bare ground this weekend. If not then, then likely by Monday, when we're supposed to get our first 50°F (10°C) high in over two weeks. It looks like next week will feature near-normal temperatures, which will probably feel quite warm.

Extreme Heat And Fire Danger In Western Australia. Hot air and blustery winds will cause a spike in fire danger ratings over Western Australia's Eucla district today. While Western Australia has recorded temperatures as high as 50.5ºC during February in the past (Mardie in 1998), the mercury hasn't climbed above 43.5ºC so far this month. However, a hot air mass sweeping through the state's southeast today could push temperatures up to 45ºC in the Eucla region. The hot air has been able to build up over the state's interior thanks to a break in the monsoon. Today, northerly winds will transport this inland head down towards the coast ahead of an approaching low pressure trough. If Eucla reaches its forecast top of 45ºC today it will be the site's hottest day since January 2020 and hottest February day in six years. The hot and windy weather is also likely to cause Extreme fire danger ratings in the Eucla district today, prompting a fire weather warning. Over the border, Nullarbor is tipped to reach 43ºC today and Adelaide could hit 38ºC in the afternoon. A gusty southwesterly change will sweep through the Eucla district today and this evening, bringing a sharp drop in temperature. A few showers and thunderstorms could also accompany the change. Low this morning was an extremely cold 73 F (22.8 C), rumor has it Majami was rushing outside from his home with hot chocolate, thick coats, blankets, hats, gloves, etc to try and save all the homeless from freezing solid from the extreme cold.
Unfortunately, Majami didn't get up quick enough to save all the Phallus Palms, but he sure did make a valiant effort, saving about 54% of them.
Luckily, it has now warmed up to a relatively mild but still frigid 82 F (27.8 C) with a 70 F (21.1 C) dew point, and all the homeless are basking in the sun trying to thaw out.
