Cool how you just casually get 60+ mm of a rain in a storm, especially as epic thunderstorms. In already rainy Rochester, a fall that heavy happens only every few years. The lone 100 mm day was way back in 1893. Surprisingly Fort Collins has had more days >100 mm despite being a much drier climate. I'm up over 600mm ( 24" ) for January. One damn fine monsoonal burst this one !

Another massive downpour last night....thunder and lighting, the works ! About 90mm at home and around the other suburbs. This spot on a major arterial road between Darwin and Palmerston is a popular wake boarding place, being towed behind a 4wd....looks like fun. Thely'll be out and at it this weekend. Flooding on Darwin rural area roads atm. This is an OK fishing spot when the Elizabeth River is up....get some decent Barramundi outta here... A sure sign of a decent 'Wet' is turning on the booster of the Solar Hot Water System. No sun for over a week now !

No sun for over a week now ! Thatโs hard to believe. I thought Darwinโs wet season was highly convective like Florida.

All that rain and the Weatherzone fire danger rating for Darwin is still โModerateโ. Must take a flood to move it to โlowโ. , or is there no โlowโ category? Low/moderate is in the same rating tier, the lowest one. High is the second lowest rating lol

No sun for over a week now ! Thatโs hard to believe. I thought Darwinโs wet season was highly convective like Florida. No, when the monsoon trough settles in over the north, the convective type rain disappears, and the squally rain bands come in off the Timor and Arafura Seas. Speaking of sun, it actually cast a shadow in my yard today....for all of 10 minutes. About 20mm so far today, but the cloud is much higher and the sky is brighter without being sunny if you know what I mean. Most 'Wets' there are a couple of spells, ie 2 or 3 days of full overcast. This one is out of the ordinary with a week of full overcast ( and correspondingly low max temps )

that dude in the last photo looks like hes fishing in the ditch I think he actually is. Look closely and he appears to be holding a rod. He is having a flic for a Barramundi ( Australia premier freshwater sports fish, lives in salt water too and are exceptionally good eating ) This spot on Elizabeth Valley Road, has produced fish of a meter in length when in flood and a high spring tide pushes up the river. And we have a Million Dollar Fish competition, whereby the Govt has released tagged fish all over the Territory with $10k tags and one with a million dollar tag every year to attract anglers from down south up to the Territory. No one has caught a million dollar fish yet, but upward of 10 of the 10k ones are caught every year. A 'rat' ( ie undersize one ) I caught recently.

The official BOM AWS ( about 700m from me ) recorded 109.8mm in the 24 hours to 9.00am this morning. My place I measured 101.3mm. Also the overnight minimum of 21.6c was the coolest Feb morning since 2013. ( record is 17.2c in 1949 )

Re the coolish overnight minimum ( 21.6c ) this morning. The record of 17.2c in 1949 was preceded the morning before with an 18.8c. To have two sub 20c temps in February is quite remarkable and I wonder what the charts and weather patterns were on these days and nights ? So the second half of Feb 1949 had a ripper of a monsoonal burst with a fortnight of good rains and lower max temps as one associates with an active monsoon event. max temps, min temps and rainfall 12th - 30.7c/24.9c-19.1mm 13th - 29.3c/24.7c-27.2mm 14th - 27.8c/23.6c-62.7mm 15th - 27.3c/22.9c-137.7mm 16th - 26.1c/24.3c-41.1mm 17th - 27.7c/24.0c-29.2mm 18th - 28.2c/23.7c-49.5mm 19th - 28.3c/24.2c-90.4mm 20th - 29.0c/23.1c-29.2mm 21st - 31.1c/24.0c-4.3mm 22nd - 30.7c/25.6c-0.0mm 23rd - 30.9c/24.1c-8.6mm 24th - 26.7c/18.8c-6.1mm 25th - 27.1c/17.2c-5.8mm 26th - 29.8c/21.9c-0.0mm So 511mm in two weeks... outstanding event ! And no day exceeded the av Feb max of 31.5c and only 2 nights exceeded the av min temp of 24.8c. The sort of event Territorians drool over ! So why/how did those couple of mornings drop below 20c ? Well buggered if I know ! Certainly after the major monsoonal burst there were a couple of overcast drizzly/light rain kinda days ( not unusual, we have had a couple this season ). Without access to the charts of the time, I wonder if there was a passing of a tropical low, and there were a couple of days that had cooler winds although still overcast and light rain, with the winds coming from a drier and cooler quadrant ? Not a very scientific explanation, but this has occurred in the region in the past, specifically that cold April day a few years ago. ( 2017 ) There has not been a sub 20c minimum in February since 1949 when the record was set. There were two such mins in 1941 ( 19.3c and 19.4c ) and a 17.5c on the 18th Feb 1942....I'm suspicious of this reading as it was the day before Darwin ( and the Post Office ) was destroyed by the Jap bombing raid of 19th Feb 1942. Only 3 other years where the min temp has dropped to 20c in February....1964, 1965 and 1987.
