Indeed, the AWS is to the east of me almost at sea level, whereas I am on one of the highest points in the suburb. Often easterly storm systems peter out as they approach my place.....conversely I often do a bit better with coastal and north westerly action. But all in all pretty close in a given month or year

Looks like another good flush out of the rivers coming up. This time along the base of the Top End and all rivers to the north and south. Also if travelling please note that roads and “ major” highways may be affected.|

Just another soggy day in paradise in the Top End again this morning, after a few squally showers passed thru at some ungodly hour this morning. Our deep tropical low in the SW GOC continues to influence the weather over the entire Top End and NW QLD this morning. Some tremendous falls are being reported with official figures as high as 93mm but reports from station owners of up to 220mm about the Roper Vally area. These figures are not surprising and expect these to become more widespread during today and tomorrow as our Low begins to track WSW across the Carpentaria district. The low continues to be fed by a surge in the monsoon so the amount of moisture piling into this system is quite staggering. Whilst the low is deep, currently 995hpa, it’s close proximity to land means it’s unlikely to reach cyclone status, but the longer it sits over water then the stronger it will get. The system is quite broad all the same and anywhere across the Top End, Victoria, Carpentaria and Gregory districts, as well as the northern Tanami can expect showers and storms. Areas closest to the low are also likely to see rain areas and squally winds with some fairly widespread heavy falls. Darwin won’t miss out either. 2 days ago this weekend looked like it was going to be mostly fine 🙄 But this is no normal season it seems and as such, today will be a lot like yesterday with showers and storms pushing up from the SSW. It will be quite breezy as well and as the system in the Gulf pushes west, our weather will deteriorate over the next two days about the western Top End. Wind warnings are current about the NE of the Territory and despite no warnings locally, you can be assured that strong winds will accompany any storms during today, so take care if you are on the water. A very interesting few days ahead and if you like rain well this is close to paradise. And a Biblical dump of rain out at my son's place in Palmerston around lunchtime..... weather AWS few and far between out there in the Palmy 'Burbs, but some PWS showing a 100mm or so in a couple of hours. My gauge at home showing about 50mm since 9.00am this morning.

The severe weather advice has been extended West tonight and now includes Katherine and Timber Creek. The advice details all the issues but if you are in these areas please take care. Nice and quiet in the Darwin area now after a fairly wild afternoon. I recorded 80mm yesterday and overnight. Enjoy the few hours of “dry” weather as further showers are heading north from the southern Daly region. A couple of light showers overnight.

The waterfalls out at Litchfield Park are pumping atm And an unwelcome visitor on the Lee Point beach. A designated 'dogs without leads' beach, so its a smorgasbord for the local crocodile population.

Ok, another obscure stat I've just pondered...how often has the Darwin Airport exceeded 1000mm in the first two months of a calendar year ( so Jan and Feb ) ? So the mean ( av ) is 801.5mm and the median is 777.0mm. In 80 years of records, this has happened 20 times, so on 20 occasions, come the end of Feb, people have been saying, "Jeez, she's been a bloody good 'wet' so far..... Here's the years and totals..... 1962 - 1035.8mm 1967 - 1075.8mm 1968 - 1221.0mm 1969 - 1188.6mm 1974 - 1116.9mm 1980 - 1055.4mm 1981 - 1120.0mm 1984 - 1004.8mm 1991 - 1500.4mm 1995 - 1189.4mm 1997 - 1074.0mm 1998 - 1186.4mm 2000 - 1108.6mm 2003 - 1193.4mm 2004 - 1011.2mm 2008 - 1185.2mm 2010 - 1059.0mm 2011 - 1737.4mm 2017 - 1095.4mm 2018 - 1257.2mm 2021 - 814 8mm to 9/2.....would expect to say, "Jeez, its been a bloody good wet....."

greysrigging 2011 seems intense! Was there one particular storm system that brought The Big Rain(tm) all at once, or was it just a sustained wet pattern? I don't think I could imagine 68 inches of rain in just two months though!

Funny video. Isnt he worried about snakes doing that by the bushes there? Or do you not see as many in the urban area?

Funny video. Isn't he worried about snakes doing that by the bushes there? Or do you not see as many in the urban area? There are snakes, but they don't particularly bother me. Mostly harmless carpet pythons and tree snakes in suburbia, although there are Taipans ( rare ) King Browns ( relatively common ) and Death Adders ( arid regions ). Btw, that is me in my back yard during last Sunday's downpour....

So, had a nice little drop ( 13.8mm ) yesterday afternoon. We are in a 'monsoonal break' period atm, so only isolated showers and storms. Welcome, but, as its saved me chore of hand watering my pot plants.

There were some epic rainfall totals inland of Darwin on Saturday afternoon and evening. Upwards of 200mm in the hills around Adelaide River caused flash flooding and stranded motorists out along the Daly River Road. My son and some mates were stuck and had to spend a wet night out at Daly River.

Well my son told me he was going out there for a day trip ( in Feb after a monster 'wet season' so far, and I thought he was a complete F-wit for even considering it. I told the tool not to call me if he got stuck, he could effin' well walk home ( 170klm ) ! Because 2 wets ago he and his older brother went out there in January and got bogged, so me and the middle son had to mount a 340klm round trip rescue mission.... then I got bogged as well, 5 hours of digging in the mud and heat, then 3 other dickheads turned up, pulled me out, then they got bogged as well ! Was the day trip from hell ! Haha, we laugh about it now.... But yeah, nah..... I'm too old for this shit now..... but it did look like a fun day... ( face slaps self, what am I thinking.... ) 2018 rescue mission.
The track in the 'dry season'....
