They're both similar in latitude with only a 4 degree difference between them (Urumqi 43N, St Johns 47N) but wildly different temperature ranges due to the former being in the middle of the biggest continent on earth at 2.5k ft asl and the other on the coast of Canada. I think this has the potential to be a close race but Urumqi's nice summers might not be enough to compensate for their extreme winters, even for the proper-summer lovers on here. Then again, St John's seemingly never-ending winters might prove a hard sell. edit: I wanted to add how mad it is the fact that 3.5 million people live in Urumqi. I know it's not a lot for China but that many people put up with its winters? damn

Tough one for me as I love both rain and snow, but Urumqi's temperatures are much better. I'll go with Urumqi for the continentality plus, St. John's seasonal lag would drive me up the wall.
I also thought Urumqi had colder winters than that, for some reason I thought they had -12 C average highs in January.

Ürümqi. Winters are a bit too cold and summers a bit too warm, but the seasonal lag in St John’s is vile.

Urumqi is better, more sunshine, less rain days, and much warmer.

St. John's gets way too much snow in the winter. St. John's winters also drag on too long with crappy summers. Urumqi for the dryness and sunshine levels plus better summers.

In climates outside the tropics and subtropics the warmer half year and summer are more important than other seasons and so I would be willing to endure these consecutive three months of Urumqi with a -10c daily mean when I know that it will be compensated to me by July with daily mean of 23.7c degrees. So, Urumchi.

Both E climates, but Urumqi for being warmer in general

Urumqi by a country mile of course. A few degrees warmer in the winter would be nice, as would slightly wetter and milder summers, but overall it's quite a nice climate by my standards.
St. John's on the other hand is just ghastly, hands down one of my least favorite climates among major population centres in Canada. Obnoxiously wet winters, appallingly cool summers, depressingly cloudy year round, and that seasonal lag is just gross - March is colder than December, April is colder than November, May is colder than October, and June is colder than September. No thanks!

Both are bad, but Urumqui narrowly wins because of the shorter winters and proper summers.

Urumqi definitely. St Johns is better in Dec, Jan, and Feb but Urumqi easily wins for actually having a summer.
St Johns is frigid for 47N sea level.

I guess Urumqi(reluctantly), a great summer of St John's can't be compensated enough by the rest seasons of the year.
