Once again February was absolutely frigid, the coldest month of the winter by a wide margin, the third time in four winters that this has happened. We ended up 6.9C below average, as well as 3.9C colder than an average January and 8.2C colder than January this year, despite a serious warmup in the last week of the month. We also had some days that were unusually windy considering how cold they were. The first two and a half weeks of the month were basically on par with the same period during the historically cold February of 2019 (which was the most anomalously cold month in my lifetime), with some very similar stats: 9 nights below -30C (vs 13 in 2019) 7 nights below -35C (identical to 2019) 2 nights below -40C (identical to 2019) Our two -40 nights were on Feb 7th and 8th this year, versus Feb 6th and 7th in 2019. The biggest difference between these two Februaries is that this year we warmed up to March-like temperatures after the major cold snap was done, whereas in 2019 we only "warmed" up to January-like temperatures (with an incredible -5C record high that month, versus an unremarkable 5C this time around). We did manage to beat 2019 in one way, and that's that we had one high below -30C, an incredibly rare occurrence that I cannot recall seeing anytime in recent years. Stats: Average high: -14.0C (normal: -7.2C) Average low: -24.8C (normal: -17.8C) Mean: -19.4C (normal: -12.5C) Warmest high: 4.7C (Feb 22nd) Warmest low: -6.0C (Feb 22nd) Coldest high: -30.4C (Feb 7th) Coldest low: -41.4C (Feb 7th) Precipitation: 1.2mm (normal: 8.8mm) Precipitation days: 5 (normal: 7.1)

Normal is 62.7/41.6F & 5.21" precip. February ended up well below normal temp-wise but not in the top 10 coldest. Cold blast mid-month was the longest stretch of freezing temps since records were kept. It was offset somewhat by warm temps at the end of the month. Total precip a little below normal. Had accumulating sleet on Feb 15th and freezing rain on Feb 17th. Lowest max: 25F Highest min: 70F Number of ice days: 5 Number of freezing lows: 12 Highest dewpoint: 70F Lowest dewpoint: 4F Average dewpoint: 39.7F

Remarkable warmth relative to the averages in NE France late in the month. 5 consecutive 19°C+ highs in Saint-Dizier: 3 consecutive 20°C highs in Mulhouse, after a cold mid-month: Of course the anomolies are positive everywhere, it's the 2020s after all. What's next, a week of 30°C in early April? Well, where do I sign?

February started extremely cold and ended very mild, but managed to be 2.1C below average. Mean temp for the first 18 days was -10.0C, and 1.0C for the last 10. Dry month, and likely quite sunny. All in all, a great late winter.
Highest high: 9.4C (28th) - new record for the Artukainen station Lowest high: -11.5C (11th) Highest low: 2.4C (25th) Lowest low: -20.1C (18th)
Deviations from 91-20,

It can pretty much be split in half, winter/spring. One day I'll summon up the energy to make a climate box.

Average February conditions
Mean maximum: 38.6°C | Average high: 26.7°C | Daily mean: 20.8°C | Average low: 14.9°C | Mean minimum: 9.7°C
Average precipitation: 44.3mm | Average precipitation days (>0.2mm): 7.9 | Average relative humidity: 68% | Mean monthly sunshine hours: 228.8
Cooler and cloudier than average again probably due to La Nina. Temperatures were decent, but the lack of rain was a real downer. No thunderstorms and nothing heavier than a light shower basically all month. The only really notable events were the 7.9°C night on the 30th, the coolest Feb night since 2006 and the 33.2°C day on the 11th, which was the coolest February monthly maximum temperature since 1966.

Morningrise it amazes me how people can live in such a shitty cold climate... Here was February 2021 at Green Bay airport (all temps Fahrenheit, all precip and snow in inches): 5.8'F colder and 0.05" drier than average. Temperatures ranged from -16'F (-27'C) to 46'F (8'C). Definitely the coldest month of this winter, which seems to be the rule rather than the exception lately, which IMO is fucking disgusting.

It sometimes amazes me that I live in it Actually, Dec/Jan/Feb can be quite rough at times but the rest of the year is fine by my standards. Cooler than I'd like and too prone to wintery weather in the shoulder seasons, but still liveable for me.

From the sounds of it you wouldn't find my climate too bad, but I could be way off base here.

From the sounds of it you wouldn't find my climate too bad, but I could be way off base here. You're in Green Bay? It's okay, too snowy in the winter and I'd prefer warmer winters for those summer temps (or warmer summers for those winters, either one would be okay) but otherwise decent. Milwaukee is much better and an excellent climate by my standards, just still too wet in the winter. Similar climates like Windsor, Ontario (my favorite in Canada) are definitely up there as far as ideal climates go for me. Nearly perfect temperature profiles, just too wet in the winter and perhaps a tad humid in the summer (not entirely sure - I greatly enjoy some humidity but have never lived in a climate with humid summers before, so I don't actually know if I just like it in very small doses like we get here or if I'd be okay with it all summer long). Give me climates like Windsor, Milwaukee, Toronto, and even places with winters as cold as Minneapolis or Montreal (as long as they have decently warm summers, which both of those cities have for my tastes), and combine that with Saskatoon levels of dryness in the winter and that's more or less my ideal climate. I would also be fine going a bit warmer, like Vancouver winter temperatures (again with much less precipitation) with Toronto or Windsor level summers. That would be the warm end of an ideal climate for me, Minneapolis would be the cold end.

Just tell him a place called Rhinelander exists, without even having to leave Wisconsin. And even Rhinelander is mild compared to International Falls, MN which has an average low of -6.6'F (-21.4'C) in January. And there are a shitload of places in Alaska that make THAT look temperate - so your dad clearly doesn't know what he's talking about.

February 2021 was about the best month I could ask for here in Norman, Oklahoma. While the Norman weather station stopped recording in January 2020 (there's also a Norman mesonet site I don't have easy access to), the Oklahoma City weather station racked up some impressive stats. It was the coldest month since December 1983 and the coldest February since 1978. It was also its first month with a mean temperature below freezing since December 2000. It was the snowiest month since February 2011. With 9 days of snow on the ground, it was the most since Feb. 2011, which also had that many. We had continuous snow cover from Sunday, February 14 to Saturday, February 20, making it the first time I'd seen around week of snowpack. It was technically slightly less than 168 hours, as it was from noon Sunday to late Saturday night, however. This was the coldest month I've experienced in my 22 years of life, and the low of -14°F (-25.5°C) [-12°F (-24.5°C) in Norman] was the coldest temperature I've been around for. When I was outside, it was only -7°F (-22°C), but that was still the coldest weather I've been outside in. The -14 was also the coldest temperature in OKC since February 12, 1899! And the high of 4°F (-15.5°C) on Feb. 15, 2021 was the coldest high since December 1989. We also had 8 days not exceeding 20°F (-7°C), and 6 days of snowpack of at least 6 inches (15 cm) (I only saw about 3 days with that much). Both of those set records. It should be mentioned that our 10.6" (26.9 cm) of snow was spread out over multiple systems. We had freezing drizzle the nights of Feb. 8 and 9, then surprise flurries on the 11th and 12th that produced a dusting of accumulation. On the 14th we had our big system that was initially forecast to give us a foot, but "only" gave us 4.5" (11.4 cm) in Norman. Then on the night of the 16th we had a second system give me about 3.3" (8.4 cm) (more in OKC again). I had never seen significant accumulating snow on previous snowpack before (Feb 2015 in NC had snow on previous patchy snow). It was also cool to see all of the blowing and drifting snow from the storm on the 14th. Snow drifted up to two feet deep (60 cm), which I had never seen before either. Lake Thunderbird iced over, which was interesting to see, but by the time I got out there, it was starting to melt. Roads were impassable on Sunday the 14th and pretty bad until Thursday. My only complaint about the month is the warmer weather we had near the end, but given I live at 35°N, this was a spectacular month, and it was fun to get a taste of what more northern places experience regularly.

Decided to gather some monthly summaries for towns in KS, OK & TX affected by the mid-February cold snap, I’m focusing on Texan ones in this post. srfoskey already posted a summary for OKC but I’ll post it anyway since I’ve been making an effort to gather the following summaries. For fuck's sake. Why did SMHI decide it would be a good idea to have the monthly summary stretchee out to 4 PDF pages instead one single page? What's interesting about these is that they show the 1991-2020 average sunshine, and apparently Umeå is the second sunniest station on average in all of Sweden in February despite being at 63.8°N competing against stations at 55.6°N, and the all-time national record is 161h set in Umeå
