Personally, I'm rather skeptical. Jumping 4°F in one hour smells odd.

Muh gorebull warming, muh tegnell Because of course you have such a proven track record: As for the Pee En Double Yoo heatwave…not gonna happen. Mark my words. Anyway, using the 4.5°F/1000ft lapse rate from the reference above and comparing to nearby sites (Bishop, Goldfield, Las Vegas, and Barstow) indicates to me the DV temperature today should have been in the range 123-128°F. This combined with the 4°F jump in an hour, something doesn't sit quite right.

Yeah, because a station just 70 ft (!) away from a paved parking lot is more "reliable" than its entirely rural siting back in 1913.
Mmmmmmkay

Mmmmmmkay So you think a station placed in the middle an irrigated alfalfa field would be a much better representation of the natural environment than the current station?

What station is in a irrigated field? Last time I checked, there was no agriculture in Death Valley.

Well, Las Vegas jumped 3°F in one hour (113°F at 4pm, 116°F at 5pm).... For that matter, Las Vegas spiked to 117° at 5:53pm. Last three days Death Valley has been 12-13°F hotter than Las Vegas. So it's in the ball park.

Hourly observations
Basically a heat spike for that hour, 4-5 f warmer than anything else. Wish there was more detailed data to see if it steadily warmed and then cooled from that peak or if it was just a brief spike which would make it less likely to be reliable. Las Vegas reached 116-117 and Death Valley has a 13 f higher record high and 13 f higher July average high so that’s plausible. Both places also had a similar peak around 5 PM. Anyway as it’s a record, NWS will have to review it although I’d have a hard time believing they find it inaccurate if it is.

Just more reasons why the 134°F is the stuff of fantasy. Did you read the article? So that just nullifies the entire climatological history of Death Valley. Consistency is key - you can't just claim "hottest EVAH!!11" when the station sitings are drastically different.

Notice the giant QUESTION MARK in the title and the fact that I immediately questioned the measurement.

129.4°F today. Another chance of 130 Sunday, much smaller chance Monday, then no more realistic chances for at least the next 10 days or so.
