Was a damn fine lightshow over the city around midnight. Not a lot of rain in it here at home, but plenty of thunder and lighting. ( pics by local storm chaser Chris Garth )

The sat image over Northern Australia atm. The residual green to Darwin's north west is the remnants of the 2.00am storm that dumped 61.6mm at Darwin Airport. Meanwhile 5klm away at my place, I only measured 23mm.

After a cloudless 34c day ( noteworthy as it is January ! ), looks like some action forming out to our East.

Here we go....bring it on ! A Cape York Cyclone ( Tiffany ). When a Coral Sea/Cape York system moves east to west into the Gulf of Carpentaria, it often means a rejuvenation of the Monsoon across the Top End. The Gulf is a shallow warm body of water, and if the Cyclone is slow moving, it can 'bomb' very quickly. Currently a Cat 2, but may well intensify to a Cat 4 as it approaches the east coast of the Territory.

Ex TC Tiffany has crossed into the Gulf this morning and is expected to reform and be close to Groote Eylandt this time tomorrow morning.

The abos on Groote Eyeland must've gotten one heck of a show. Too bad alcholol is banned for them . Wonder how high the cloud tops were.

A real monster of a Top End storm early this morning, A Severe Storm Warning in place and a well organised squall line moving across the City and suburbs as I type. A bullseye hit for me in Leanyer. Incomming ! General view over the Top End.

All the action centered around ex TC Tiffany over the northeastern Kimberley atm. We are in an isolated showers and storms pattern in the Top End.

Half way through the month and a somewhat disappointing season so far.... hot and dry, above average for heat, below average for rainfall.
