Will the Airport reach or exceed the monthly mean of 431.8mm or even the median of 418.8mm ? I've felt this Jan has been a bit below par, especially the first half, although this last week/10 days or so has delivered classic monsoonal squalls, if not biblical rainfall totals at the Airport and Northern Suburbs. The Airport is sitting on 381.8mm as of 5.10pm 30/1/22, so needs another 50mm before 9.00am tomorrow morning to equal the Jan average.

Rainfall for Jan 2022 PWS ( manual ) at home Leanyer Heights = 474.4mm AWS offical BOM Leanyer ( 900m from home ) = 411.8mm. ( mean 446.7mm ) Darwin Airport ( 4.9klm from home ) = 390.2mm ( mean 431.8mm )
All in all a 'pass' mark for the month after a slow start. 302.3mm in the last 10 days saved the month at my place. Many rural areas and the satellite city of Palmerston have done much better with reported totals coming in of +500mm and +600mm monthly totals.
ps:- heavy monsoonal squall blowing in now.....half an hour after the cut off time for being recorded in January. i'm getting wet sitting at my office computer deck....sideways windblown rain thru the louvered windows...

Two massive overnight storm fronts screaming in from the Arafura Sea ( oh and an earthquake at 4.57am ) I doubt even Noah saw rain rates of 371mm/hour ! thats about 6mm per minute !! Rain tapering off now, and as soon as its light enough to see outside, I'll have to check for wind damage; there was some awfully ominious banging and crashing sounds about 2.00am..... Severe Storm Warning in place..... another line about to come through in about three quarters of an hours time....

Alice Springs has had the wettest start to a callander on record with 244.2mm falling since 1st Jan. The mean annual rainfall is 282.3mm. The last 4 day total in the Alice is 189.8mm, and Darwin only 124.6mm. The Todd River in Alice Springs is flowing again with causeways flooded cutting the town in half.

Sun is shining in Darwin this morning, first time in weeks it seems. I scored 36.2mm yesterday and overnight. Since the 12th Jan 2022, I've measured 566.9mm and only 3 of those 25 days have been rainless. None of the rain has been particularly torrential ie with massive daily totals....more just good steady soaking type rain. My yard and garden is totally waterlogged, pavers and concrete paths all slimy and mouldy, rock borders moss covered. The sun is welcome, a chance to getting some washing dry and produce some hot water from the solar system. Max temp might make 31c before it clouds over again. I'd say some more showers will come in the Timor Sea out to the west later this afternoon or evening.

I'd say some more showers will come in the Timor Sea out to the west later this afternoon or evening. Not bad on the 566mm in 3 weeks. the wet a pass so far? We've been having this discussion on Pilko's Chat On Weather FB Page ( local group ). Some places have done better than others throughout the City, Suburbs and Rural Areas. At my place, after a slow start, its a pass mark so far, the Airport is down some re average, so not quite a 'pass'. Palmerston ( satellite city 20klm south ) has done very well, several hundred mm better than me and the Airport, so they are all very happy. Generally speaking I would say a pass so far in the Top End, although having said that, the big Arnhemland and Kakadu rivers are yet to flood, so its getting on a bit in the season for the Barramundi ( our premier sportsfish ) breeding season to really kick on.... Sometimes our monsoonal bursts coincide with an active MJO (Madden-Julian Oscillation ). There is a dryer surge of air pushing North from the inland south east atm, hence the dry day today and 32c max temp. i'm not pinning too much hope on February being an above average month, but hell I'm more often wrong than right on these things and 160 odd mm in the first 5 days of Feb is a pretty decent start to the month here at home ( Leanyer ) From our local weather guru, Pilko, a short time ago... "Good morning trendsetters.. Hope you are all having an awesome start to the weekend. Bit of a shock to actually see the sun this morning and to be honest I didn’t think I would see it much this weekend. Certainly a case of enjoy it while it lasts I feel as there is plenty of activity off the coast just waiting for an invite. Last nights radars, which I seemed to look at by the hour ( wonderful sleep .. not ) ... showed lots of activity on the coast and offshore. Unfortunately they didn’t have the grunt to get far inland and that’s an indication of how weak the monsoon has become when they couldn’t be pushed too far at all. Charles Point with 59 mm did ok with the coastal activity. There is still plenty of moisture tho so whilst the monsoon dissipates over the coming couple of days, showers and the odd storm will still push ashore. Then we have the defining line preceding the dry surge just to the south of Katherine atm. Along this line and stretching into the Gulf of Carpentaria is a scattering of showers and storms. In the Gulf and across the Cape at the moment they are quite massive. These will continue and become more widespread during the day with possibly some heavy falls. Anywhere south of this line is an early burst of the dry season and that’s going to continue for a day or two until a series of trough begin to allow moisture to creep in. Anywhere north of this line will see plenty of unstable air producing showers and storms and the radar this afternoon should look pretty spectacular I would reckon. So for Darwinites it’s a glorious morning and I would expect to see the sun for another hour or so, but we should see the weather become unsettled during the early afternoon onwards with the green season showing no signs of abating. It’s as good as it gets 👍 Have a great day out there" Well late afternoon ( 6.00pm ) it has clouded over after a sunny day, so we'll see if there is any action tonight....

Darwin Airport is running 1.3c below the monthly mean max temp so far ( 7 days ) in February, and 0.7c below the mean min temp. Not unexpected during an active monsoon period of generally overcast conditions. Looks like we are in for a lessening of the rain and a 'monsoonal break' period is forcast for the next 7-10 days, with max temps back up to 33c and isolated storms from the east ( as opposed to the last month of westerly flow off the Timor Sea. From local guru Pilko this morning: "Good morning trendsetters.. How good is it to see the sun again and knowing that that sun is gonna go missing again in an hour or two as more showers sweep in from the SW 😝 The Top End is showcasing its mixture of seasons of late with showers and storms over the north western third of the Top End and a return to more build up like conditions about the remaining SE Top End, as the battle between the dry air to the south and the humid unstable air to the north continues. Heavy falls in the Katherine and Gove areas yesterday where in part thanks to clashing of the two air masses, which always creates some pretty major instability. Slowly but surely the main area of activity continues to push NW and will eventually push offshore later in the week and this will put much of the Top End, including Darwin in a monsoonal break period. Not a return to build up weather as there will still be a better than even chance of activity but certainly a step back from the previous 3 weeks. Today however will see our sunny morning revert back to showers moving in from the SW. ( My Comment here; 21mm here at home this morning ) The flow has tended more SW again last night and if you noticed the radar, all the activity gave Darwin the finger as it tracked parallel to the coast. Today we have anything that develops onshore near Channel Point and surrounds will move in our general direction and already there looks to be some action popping up down there. Tomorrow looks the best of the lot, as that focal point of the weather over the last few days pushes into the Darwin area. So another great day to get the outdoor chores done early and settle in for some further outflow from the clouds."

From 'Pilko's Chat On Weather' ( local FB Group ) "Good morning troops. One thing about the Top End is that the mornings up here are nothing short of sensational. Dry season or Wet season it’s just gorgeous with just a few mornings scattered across the build up months an exception to the rule. And of course this morning is a perfect example of that. No rain at my place last night but 9.4mm yesterday. Today looks a bit of a repeat of yesterday with the bulk of activity expected across the NW Top End as some drier air pushes in from the south. Plenty of coastal action out there atm especially down in the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf, stretching down into the Kimberley. There is potential for localised heavy falls about the Darwin Daly area today as showers and storms become quite widespread before much of the activity pushes offshore during the next 24/36 hours. A fair bit of sun can be expected to grace our skies in coming days as our monsoon takes a break, but it will come back again this season with indications that it might have a fair kick to it in March. And our rain won’t completely vanish in the meantime with the standard ebb and flow of afternoon and evening showers and storms pretty well becoming standard across much of the Top End from later in the week. And big thanks to OCC and BoM for the maps, radars and satellite. Have a look at that big storm in the JBG."
