The west coast of the Top End looks like the place to be this morning.

greysrigging When’s the last time Darwin had a cooler than normal month? I'll take the question on notice and do some research, but off the top of my head only 3 or 4 months since 2016 have been below average for max temps, and probably 6 or 8 monthly record max's have been set in the same timeframe. anyway, you've given me some homework to do.....

Severe rainfall deficiencies in Northern Australia March 2022. "Pretty much sums up how bad March has been so far almost the entire of northern Australia. Many places with less than 20% of the March monthly average rain. Considering March is supposed to be the peak month for cyclones this is bad considering we're in a La Nina."

The Airport has records back to 1941. Max temp monthly means 1941-2022 !991 - 2020 normals So using the 80 years of data.... There have been only 4 months below the long term mean monthy max's since Dec 2015 Dec 2016 = -0.1c Apr 2017 = -0.8c Nov 2020 = -0.1c Feb 2021 = -0.1c And since 2000, there have only been 3 years below the yearly mean max of 32.1c, last such year being in 2011 ( 31.6c )

Been looking at the 1961-1990 figures and comparing to the 1991-2020 figures - Darwin Airport 1961-1990 Monthly Rainfall. 1961-1990 Monthly Max Temps. 1961-1990 Monthly Min Temps. The BOM hasn't done ^^ as above for 1991-2020 yet, so I'll use the Wiki Climate Box, and I've not quality checked it for accuracy. So to summarise, The annual mean max temp has increased from 32.0c to 32.4c. Jan: +0.2, Feb: +0.3c, Mar: +0.5c, Apr: +0.1c, May: +0.2c, Jun: +0.5c, Jul: +0.6c, Aug: +0.5c, Sep: +0.5c, Oct: +0.6c, Nov: +0.4c, Dec: +0.2c. Doesn't seem like a big increase, however, the increases of 0.5c-0.6c during the cooler dry season months ( June- Sept ) is problematic, as is the increases in the hotter 'build up' months of Oct-Nov. Mean annual min temps have stayed the same annually at 23.3c for 1961-1990 and 2001-2020. Jan: +0.3c, Feb: +0.4c, Mar: +0.5c, Apr: +0.1c, May: +O.1c, Jun: +0.1c, Jul: +0.1c, Aug: -0.9c, Sep: -0.3c, Oct: -0.2c, Nov: -0.1c, Dec: Oc. Wet season nights have warmed, while late dry season and 'build up' nights have cooled somewhat ( that August decrease of 0.9c needs further investigation ) Rainfall comparison. 1961-1990 = 1705.1mm 1991-2020 = 1832.4mm So 127.3mm per annum wetter..... Jan: +34.1mm, Feb: +69mm, Mar: -28.1mm, Apr: +19.9mm, May: -8.2mm, Jun +0.4mm, Jul -0.1mm, Aug -6.9mm, Sep -4.4mm, Oct -9.6mm, Nov: +12.2mm, Dec: +45mm. So generally the 'Wets' have become wetter, with the latest 30 year normals recieving 127mm by averages more than the previous 30 year normals. Substantially hotter and wetter would be a fair description of the comparitive figures. Remembering that generally speaking in the tropics and closer to the Equator, there is little variation in climate data.

How good is this capture by local storm chaser Jacci Ingham ? A storm looking south of the Elizabeth River Bridge on the outskirts of Darwin.

Very active in the early hours just offshore to our north west. Could see the lightning flashes and hear distant rumbles of thunder.

Flogging down in Leanyer Heights - and rain blowing in under the house from the north north west, an unusual direction here at home. Almost always easterlies or westerlies. And just like that, its all over....13.5mm in 15 or 20 mins. Excellent ! As usual, the majority of the action is over Dundee Beach way to our south west.
