Top End Wet Season 2021-2022

The Northern Wet Season is coming to an end. April traditionally sees the rain and storms taper off, with the mean monthly about 100mm ( 4" ) on the north coast at Darwin. This can be highly variable depending on the timing of the finish of the monsoons and the first of the big Great Australian Bight highs pushing cooler and drier south easterlies over the Top End. April 2006 the monsoonal rains continued all month, for a total of 396mm. then in 2007 0nly 18.0mm and in 2008 only 10.2mm !
Allready the inland towns to the south of Darwin have dried off some, with lower DP's and humidity and cooler overnight min temps in the daily observations.
I wish the same could be said for the north coast....still oppressively hot and humid at 4.30am this morning.

And while us Top Enders love our heat and humidity for being the engine room of our convective storms....well sitting on my front verandah this morning eating breakfast with not a breath of cooling breeze, 30c and 25.5c dp, 85% humidity and the sweat dripping off me just from the effort of eating....mmmm I thought....'bring on the Dry! !

Big storm out there...sorta developed very quickly... I've a few too many beers to go out to my storm chasing spot a few klm away...

Forecast rainfall map for the next 36 hours. Looks like a pretty active few days of storms around most of the top end coming up!

"Good morning trendsetters..
Darwin City copped quite a brutal storm yesterday evening, with a few rather heart stopping close bolts thrown in for good measure.
Some impressive rainfall figures managed to get collected with 54mm at the Botanical Gardens and also out at Humpty Doo. McMinns Lagoon received 32 and well out to our east, Groote Eylandt copped 67mm in a localised downpour.
23.4mm here in Gray which continues a rather astonishing run of storm days out here in what was forecasted as a dry spell. Already this month we have had 83mm out here in the wetlands and 205.2mm since the 23rd of March.
I very much like these all new early dry season conditions. 😝
And today is going to be another day like yesterday with hot humid conditions prevailing, before late afternoon and evening showers and storms again push in from the east.
Again gusty winds are a probability and localised heavy falls a possibility but with a renewed surge of drier air again pushing up from the great interior, most of the action will be about the northern and western Top End.
That drier air is likely to push most if not all the action into the far NW corner by Friday as the dry season sends out its feelers and prepares for a full scale takeover, but don’t despair as it’s only temporary and models are all starting to get keen on another burst of wet weather later next week and that’s before a more thorough clean out late in the month.
We can only hope that it’s going to be a widespread wet spell.
