deadly cold coming to Crapbrook. hope 🖕🏿Mörön🖕🏿 will be ok ehhh it's not that bad. Current coldest day in the forecast is +7F / -5F on the 29th/30th. But, it might end up being colder than the forecast, which has happened quite a few times this winter.

When it's hot in the southeast, the Sydney region gets the brunt of it -- Pretty impressive how Singleton and Maitland, which are more inland, don't get as hot as Penrith and Camden during heat outbursts. Though may be UHI is a factor here. The Sydney basin does get a fair old Foen effect with westerlies decending from the Blue Mountains. And depending where the pool of hot air is sited, places like Camden and Penrith generally do pretty well on hot days. This has more to do with altitude of the AWS sites as opposed to UHI. I can't see any UHI at either site, with the Penrith site being at Penrith Lakes at only 25m asl deep in the Nepean River Valley, and at the foot of the Blue Mountains. The built up areas are to the East of the location of the AWS, to the west is hill country, farmland and bush. The Camden AWS is at the Airport, also deep in the Nepean Valley and at 74m asl, surrounded by farmland. In fact the Camden AWS sees some frosts in winter, my mothers place higher up at Cobbitty rarely saw a frost on the grass. Foehn effect make perfect sense (rather than UHI), considering how distant the weather stations are from the urban environments (which I hadn't known until you specified their whereabouts)! Btw, Greater Western Sydney received N'westerlies that day, whereas Sydney CBD and eastern suburbs were getting northeasterly breezes.

Australia Posts Southern Hemisphere's Highest Temperature Of 2021 ( source: Weatherzone ) Image: Modelled surface air temperature over Australia on Monday afternoon. A weather station in Mardie, WA has just registered the highest temperature of the year in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere. Northwestern Australia has been baking in an intense heatwave over the last several days, with a stubborn mass of hot air sending temperatures soaring into the mid-to-high forties day after day. Monday will be Marble Bar's fifth consecutive day above 45ºC, and two of the next three days could get this hot as well. This heatwave means that every day so far this month has reached at least 43.5ºC in Marble Bar. While Marble Bar's prolonged run of heat has been remarkable, some other places have been even hotter. Mardie, located near the Pilbara coast between Onslow and Karratha, reached a whopping 47.9ºC on Monday morning. This is less than one degree off the site's December record of 48.8ºC from 1986. Mardie's 47.9ºC on Monday is the highest temperature officially recorded in Australia this year. According to Maximiliano Herrera, a climatologist who documents extreme temperatures around the world, it's also the highest temperature of the year in the Southern Hemisphere. Australia's highest December temperature on record was 49.9ºC at Nullarbor, SA in 2019.

Damn, that puts the fact that every day from the 12th up to yesterday (except 16th) have had warmer maxima at my PWS (about 700 ft higher elevation) than Ciampino AP to shame. Pretty cool imagery of valley fog in Scotland—akin to blood running through veins

It was cold on Sunday, with a very thick fog. Someone on Twitter took this great photo of Dinas Bran.

It's looking like a La Nina pattern in the 6-10 day, but with the warmth being shifted a bit further west.

Today’s max was just 46F. First time to have a high below 50F this season. Some rain this morning and even reports of sleet in the northwest part of LA! Stayed overcast in the afternoon but may clear up some tonight. Forecast to get down to the mid 30’s.

The mild spell officially ended yesterday, with a low of -10.6C. The previous seven days had an avg hi of 5.1C and a low of -0.3C, so well above average. Today it's probably gonna be around -10C also during daylight.

High temps according to ECMWF and GFS...holy FARK! Shows -10c highs in Vancouver Monday-Wednesday lol. Again, I'm fully expecting this thing to moderate because we have not seen anything near that level of cold since at least December 1990, or even further back. Extreme cold just doesn't happen here anymore.

We're getting a minor/moderate ice storm in the Vancouver region this evening. Environment Canada has posted freezing rain warnings. Probably 5-10mm total before things warm up in a few hours.
