Alaska is extreme but good example of why low temperatures aren't a great indicator of how strong the cold is, esp in winter. lows very a lot in a small distance from geography. the coldest lows are rather short-lived once the atmosphere mixes in the morning

Quite a forecast discrepancy tonight between NWS and WU. NWS is still maintaining its forecast low of 30 F, while WU is much much warmer at 35 F. Current dew points in the 20s F support the NWS forecast, but persistent wind may be significant enough to prevent a freeze as WU predicts.

Alaska is extreme but good example of why low temperatures aren't a great indicator of how strong the cold is, esp in winter. lows very a lot in a small distance from geography. the coldest lows are rather short-lived once the atmosphere mixes in the morning To the contrary, clear skies and calm winds are far more indicative of a cold air mass as it has the lowest energy. If you have a cold max temp under windy conditions, all that's really happened is the heat energy has been converted to kinetic energy. Your "short-lived" argument goes both ways as well. Warmer max temps are short-lived once the atmosphere becomes unmixed in the evening as the wind dies down.

Newfoundland on the warm side of the storm. 1-3 inches of rain and wind gusts up to 70 MPH possible. The Newfies have gotten pretty lucky with tons of cold rain this winter while we got snow, bunch of lows have tracked well to the east of us but west of them, hopefully the pattern flips to a more typical La Niña February here, which would mean mild.

jgtheone Avatar Jan 29, 2022 21:44:34 GMT 9.5 jgtheone said: This at a guess "Winter-like cold blast headed for Australia" { source: Weatherzone } While this weekend, conditions are rather warm (or hot) and humid across most of Australia, a powerful cold front is on its way that will send chills over much of the south, and even some parts of the north. Right across the country this weekend, temperatures are fairly typical or hotter than is expected for January. Furthermore, humidity is quite high across the east and north of the country, thanks to several troughs, one being the monsoon trough. In fact, the only location that isn’t quite so humid, is southern/western parts of WA, where the low humidity is offset by the mercury climbing into the high thirties and forties. But a lot of that will change this week as a powerful cold front sweeps over the country. Southern WA will be the first to feel the chill, as it clips the south early on Monday morning. While this is where the front will have the least effect, it will help push the hot airmass over the region further north, with the monsoon then taking over to cool the airmass itself down during the week. South Australia will be next from Tuesday morning, pushing away some of the humidity and warmth over the last few days. Adelaide is forecast to reach 34°C on Monday, but only 25°C on Tuesday and 23°C on Wednesday. Victoria and Tasmania will soon follow on Tuesday afternoon, where the change will be pretty gusty and abrupt. After a summery top of 27°C in Hobart on Tuesday, the front could cool the city by 8-12 degrees in the first hour as it blows over in the late afternoon/early evening. The cold air and showers left in its wake may mean that some of the Tasmanian highlands receive a light dusting of summer snow on Wednesday morning. Image: 850hPa temperatures and MSLP showing the cold front pushing out the warm air on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the front will start to push up the NSW coast, likely becoming a ‘southerly buster’, bringing a sharp drop in temperature and humidity as it rolls through. However the truly unusual aspect of this front will be from Thursday when the front reaches Queensland. It is quite rare for a cold front to reach into the Sunshine state during summer, let alone send a southeasterly surge that moves all the way up the coast to reach Townsville and Cairns by next Saturday. Most of the cold fronts in autumn and spring can’t manage to do this, and still not all accomplish this in the heart of winter. Image: Wind gusts over the Qld coast showing the cold front making it all the way north to Cairns The front will help keep temperatures a bit cooler and the humidity a fair bit lower for several days following, before they both start to slowly rise next week. The low pressure center will continue to the north into the Canadian Maritimes overnight, with snowfall ending south to north across New England as the system moves away. The last of the snow should end for eastern Maine early Sunday morning. Another 4-6 inches of snow is likely for eastern Maine, with a couple more inches further south across southern New England. Isolated higher totals are possible in the remaining heavy snow bands. In addition to the snowfall, overnight temperatures will be bitterly cold across New England as lows dip into the single digits to a few degrees below zero. These cold temperatures along with ongoing winds will lead to wind chills of 15-25 degrees below zero Sunday morning across interior portions of New England and New York.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction Center at 1000 AM EST. Please refer to your local National Weather Service office for additional information on this event.

If I can describe January 2022 in Riga with one word, it would be stormy. Lows from Atlantic keep passing without interruption here. Today: High 1.3C yesterday, it has warmed up to 3.4C this morning.

Weather has been pretty nondescript and seasonable the last two days. Yesterday was 25/-1 (-3.8 / -18.3 C) and mostly sunny, right now it's 10 F (-12.2 C) and cloudy, today is forecast to be cooler with a high of 18 F (-7.8 C) and cloudy with a chance of snow showers/flurries.
Big changes coming though. Tuesday has 30/-12 (-1.1 / -24.4 C) forecast, and very cold mid week, highs around 0 F (-17.8 C) both Wednesday and Thursday and TWC has a -26 F (-32.2 C) low for us on Wednesday night, quite frigid.

This storm did not disappoint even though I was on the outer edge of it. Got about 5 in/13 cm of powdery snow.
I went out last night and it was very cold and windy with blowing snow. The lowest windchill was -4 F/-20 C.

Current dew points in the 20s F support the NWS forecast, but persistent wind may be significant enough to prevent a freeze as WU predicts. Terrible forecast from NWS. Didn't even get close. Low was 36 F. With NWS's accuracy waning recently and WU's inability to predict conditions during zonal flow with any resemblance to reality, there doesn't seem to be a reliable forecast for this area anymore.
