Two climates straddling the 36–37th parallels and both 1,150 m AMSL; although of differing geography, it's evident just how dramatically cooler Mount William is by annual mean than Banner Elk (especially by annual mean maximum: 12.8° C and 15.5° C in the former and latter). Shockingly, even Mount William's winter maxima are almost identical to those of Banner Elk. Mount William takes this one very easily for me: no extreme cold, but significantly more cloud and chilling rains as well as more sleet/snowfall due to majority cold-frontal precip. Summers are also preferable due to exciting swings. • Banner Elk, North Carolina (1,149 m AMSL @ 36.16° N) • Mount William (Mount Duwil), Victoria (1,150 m AMSL @ 37.30° S)

Banner Elk—warmer summers and drier.

All my father's family is from the districts in and around the Grampians, so I spent some time there as a kid. Terrific place ! The Grampians are pretty much the last ( or first ) of the 'higher country' in Western Victoria, and as such catch the first of the frontal westerly rains in the Western Districts of the state. A very changeable climate in this part of Victoria. The Grampians provide very fine examples of windward and leeward rainfall patterns. The frontal winter rains are epic on the Ranges.

Grampians because there's no chance of -30C there.
Rainfall pattern is also better in the Grampians. Summers are better in the NA climate but I don't want to chance those winters for marginally better summers.

Mount William, barely, for having warmer, wetter (and presumably less snowy) winters, less extreme record lows, and much drier summers. All of that outweighs Banner Elk’s warmer summer temperatures.

Banner Elk. Colder, snowier winters, far more variable, warmer summers, and far more storms.

My point being that do you really want to go with Umeåesque crummers and and colder shoulder seasons just because Banner Elk can experience -30C once in 50 years? Sounds quite non-canon to me relative to your normal preferences.

Perhaps, but that's only because Mt. William's geography makes for rain/sleet even at near-freezing temperatures—if it were not so isolated as a peak, it would get tons of snow (like the areas around here close to the snow-line at similar altitude). It's got the same trait as Bluff Knoll: uplift too sudden and abrupt, which doesn't allow the uppers to cool accordingly with the frontal band; and thus it must strictly fall below 0° C to get snow (which it frequently does), rather than the ~ 1.5° C threshold here.

Well, looking at banner elk again the average temps are better overall. However there is still the chance of far colder temperatures for half the year there, where at least with Mt William you know what you're getting most of the time, even though by averages it's worse. It's not a super clear cut decision and it's not like Banner Elk is this super impressive climate either, they are both bad. As I also mentioned the rainfall pattern in Mt William is better, that Feb is nice and dry. If it was something like "which one would you rather spend a year in" then I would likely go for banner elk since obviously you're likely not going to see -30 or whatever.

Banner Elk has a long set of records, and those extreme cold records are probably a thing of the past. Like in Turku, the record low is -35C but the last time it hit -30C was in 1987. Mt William is equally susceptible to very low temperatures in all seasons as the records shows.

Banner Elk is a good four season climate, while Mount William is way too oceanic. 26 precipitation days in an average month is absurd.

Banner Elk, warmer summers, more storms, more variety, less precipitation days, better record highs.
Mt William's winters are hideous.

Banner Elk easily. Mount William might get some epic frontal activity in winter but Banner Elk has much better summers and more temperature variability in all seasons.
