December has been a mixed bag of conditions and weather across the Top End, with extreme heat and a fairly dry seasonal 'build up' pattern of convectional showers and storms. As per usual at this time of the year, most weather conversations revolve around the onset ( or lack thereof ) of the Northern Monsoon, which typically happens around Boxing Day. This season has produced the goods as one would expect with rains commencing about the 21st and ramping up on the 24th. We had 5 or 6 days of full overcast and much appreciated rain, with 285mm falling between the 21st and 27th. Total December rainfall was well above the monthly average of 252.mm, with 386.6mm falling at Darwin Airport. December rain totals rely on the monsoonal onset, Dec figures the last 4 years: 2018 - 67.2mm 2019 - 58.6mm 2020 - 389.6mm 2021 - 386.6mm Up until the monsoonal onset and resultant cooler max temps, the Airport site was running at 34.7c mean max temps. The cooler daily max temps ( 4 consecutive days below 30c ) of late December has reduced the mean max temp to 33.5c, which is 0.8c above the 1941-2020 averages. This continues the trend of the last 5 or 6 years with only 3 or 4 months in this timeframe recording below average max temps. 8 Decembers since 2000 have recorded slightly below average mean max temps, again the timing of the monsoonal onset greatly influences mean max temps. For example 2019 the mean max was 35c ( no Monsoon ) 2020 the mean max was 32.6c, rains commenced on the 15th of the month. 2021 highest max temp was 36.5c on the 19th, lowest max temp was on the 25th with 27.3c. There were 9 days of +35c and 4 sub 30c days Dec 2021 Dec monthly mean max temp records: highest 35.0c in 2019 and lowest 30.8c in 1988 Min temps averaged slightly above average at 25.8c, which is 0.5c above the 1941-2020 means. Highest min temp was 29.4c on the 21st, followed the next day by the lowest of 21.8c ( after a huge storm dropped nearly 80mm in a coupla hours ) Dec monthly mean min temp records: highest 27.3c in 1985, lowest 23.8c in 1945. All in all a definite pass mark, above average rainfall, some decent storms....but the earlier heat and dp's were pretty crappy !

December was colder than normal, very much so, but due to the late month mild spell, it wasn't spectacularly cold. December 2010 is hard to beat, but this one ended a tad milder than 2012 as well. Precipitation was below average.
Highest high: 7.6C (18th) Lowest high: -14.9C (7th) Highest low: 1.6C (14th) Lowest low: -20.3C (26th)
Anomalies from 1991-2020:
High: -3.6C
Mean: -4.5C
Low: -5.4C Precipitation: -32 mm
Monthly anomalies:
Jan: -0.4C Feb: -2.1C Mar: +1.2C Apr: -0.4C May: -0.1C June: +3.8C <- New all-time record! July: +2.8C Aug: -0.9C Sep: -1.7C Oct: +2.2C Nov: +0.1C Dec: -4.5C YEAR: +/-0
Precipitation: -88 mm (-13%)
Shoulder seasons were highly disappointing, and August was just too stable, but otherwise a really nice year. edit: October was the 2nd cloudiest during the current normal period.

Dickcember, and 2021 Rabies, oh whoopsie daisy, RENMARK CRUMMARYDickcember 2021 proved to be stormless, what else is new The first half of the month was relatively gay, but the second half improved. The avg high was actually ABOVE normal. Believe that shit? After the incredibly SHIT Povember, this month was a bit of a compensation. It was certainly an improvement over that horse shit that was Dickcember 2020. But still, lows were gay, -0.2C below, which is in no way acceptable. It didn't exceed 40C, there were no awesome heatwaves, no storms, so it could be considered a vanilla month. But whatever it was, thank god it wasn't that fucken record piece of shit Poverty Povember. Anomolie;s high: +0.9C low: -0.2C rain: -19.6mm Data and nomolies additional data like wind, hurricane mcghee etc Now for the fun stuff, 2021, another fucken heap of baboon diarrhea to add to the 2020 playbook
Temps, rain and anomolies. Notice how all the crummer and crummer shoulder months are horseshit? Yeah so do I. So, let's give these months a beer score: -The beer score is based on averages and my personal likes and preferences, and what I think each month should be. It may appear there are a lot of happy faces contrary to my trashing of this year, but those are all in winter and I don't care about winter. It is the WARM half of the year that matters, that's when I actually give a shit about temps, far moreso than in winter. You can clearly see the reprehensible crummer, Farch, Cocktober and Povember this year, the very time when negative anomolies are in NO WAY acceptable. Key: - cancerous piece of fuck -piece of fuck - piece of shit - lame duck - vanilla - okay, decent - very good - excellent - fuckan aye Jan low: 15.3C (-1.1) high: 32.4C (-1.4) rain: 13.4mm (-5.2) Feb low: 14.6C (-1.4) high: 31.0C (-1.6) rain: 2.6mm (-16.3) Mar low: 12.5C (-0.5) high: 27.9C (-1.2) rain: 9.0mm (-2.5) Apr low: 7.9C (-1.3) high: 24.8C (+0.1) rain: 0.0mm (-18.1) May low: 5.9C (-0.6) high: 20.4C (+0.3) rain: 5.0mm (-10.8) Jun low: 6.3C (+1.8) high: 17.4C (+0.6) rain: 13.0mm (-6.2) Jul low: 4.4C (+0.6) high: 16.7C (+0.2) rain: 31.0mm (+12.7) Aug low: 5.3C (+0.9) high: 19.4C (+1.0) rain: 14.4mm (-7.2) Sep low: 6.8C (+0.1) high: 22.3C (+0.2) rain: 16.8mm (-7.2) Oct low: 8.2C (-0.9) high: 24.3C (-1.2) rain: 9.0mm (-14.5) Nov low: 12.8C (+0.4) high: 25.8C (-3.2) rain: 44.4mm (+22.6) Dec low: 14.2C (-0.2C) high: 32.3C (+0.9) rain: 2.2mm (-19.6)

2021 December and Annual Weather Summary, Sheffield
December was half a degree milder than average overall. It was quite an interesting month, with a variation in weather conditions throughout. It started farily cold and unsettled, with stormy and wet conditions. There was a milder, more settled period between 11th-16th. Mid-month, high pressure built up, and temperatures began to drop. There was a period of "anti-cyclonic gloom" and even some snow on 19th despite high pressure. By 22nd, this high collapsed and milder air began to slowly eek its way in with low pressure predominating once again. Low pressure caused some periods of heavy rain around the Christmas-Boxing Day period. At Christmas, a battle of mild air to the south and very cold air inflowing from the east brought about a band of icy/snowy precipitation, which just so happened to be placed to give a "White Christmas" to Sheffield late Christmas day, with moderate snowfall of big flakes. Then, there was much sleet and heavy rain early Boxing Day. More very heavy rain and low pressure followed; then in the final three days, a record (for some parts of the UK) mild period saw out the month, with some particularly mild nights. The month was unsettled overall and substantially wetter than average. Now, for the overview of the year 2021 at Sheffield. January: The month was notably cold for the most part, especially the first half. It was also very unsettled and stormy with frequent snowy outbreaks, especially mild month and again 20th-21st. February: February was a month of two distinct halves; a very cold, icy first half, but then a mild, more pleasant second half. Overall, temperatures came to average, but it was wet. March: Started very cold in the first week, but dry. Then, there was very heavy rain in the second week. Mild weather dominated the second half; and then there was a "warm blip" with a near record high temperature on 31st. Temps 1 degree above average and rain on average. April: The most anomalous month of the year, with notably extremely cool nights. Nearly half the nights below freezing. It was a NE'ly month and very very dry, with much frost and sunnier than average. 2.5 degrees below average. May: Very unsettled with twice the average rainfall. Very cool in the second half and first half, then a few mild days in the final week. There was a notable thunderstorm with hail on 11th, hail also fell on 19th. Very showery and unsettled. Two degrees cooler than average. June: First half was warm and dry, then the second half was somewhat cool, and cloudy but quite dry as well. In all a degree milder than average. July: A warm and wetter than average month with numerous showers. A notable heatwave from 16th-22nd, with temperatures reaching 30 degrees and over 27 every day for a whole week. 1.4 degrees above average. August: Record breakingly dull and lowest maximum temperature ever recorded. Temperatures were remarkably consistent owing to constant cloud cover. It was somehow also extremely dry. Temps slightly below average. September: September was one of the warmest on record. A notable heatwave in the first/second week reaching 29 degrees. The rest of the month was also quite warm and mostly dry. 2 degrees above average. October: A fairly mild, and wet month. The temp was over a degree above average. Temps were quite consistent for the month part but it nearly reached 20 degrees on 8th. November: Milder than average by a degree, and relatively dry. Despite the proliferation of mildness, there was a sharp cold snap in the final week with substantial snow. December: You've already seen the description above. Conclusion: The year of 2021 was slightly drier than average - with wet winter months, wet May and very dry April, June and August. Spring was mostly cold, especially April and May. Summer was overall quite warm except August. Autumn was warm, and it ended on a mild note. The year as a whole was a little milder than average. However, it was a dull year, with little sunshine and possibly less than 1,300 hours total. Edit: Sunshine hours are in; fucking pathetic! 31.5 and less than 1300 for the year making it one of the dullest on record!

Been a near/slightly warmer than normal December. This December has started off fairly unsettled, with a series of low-pressure systems bringing rainfall, before high pressure built in for the middle of the month, bringing dryness. Deep moisture advection being in the warm sector of the frontal system that impacted western Europe brought mild, damp conditions for Christmastime, before high pressure built in for the final week of December, with New Year's Eve being remarkably warm; seeing a nearly 5°F warmer high than Ciampino AP. I did a drip test on my rain gauge and found it to likely be recording precipitation by 25-30% too low, and also to fill in the January-March observation gap, I made a weather box combining my stats with a couple of nearby PWS'es—this should give a good idea of what 2021 was like in Velletri: Average dew point (min. dew point + difference between max/min DP / 2): 5.0°C (41.0°F) Average 1 AM dew point: 3.9°C (39.1°F) Average 1 PM dew point: 6.9°C (44.4°F) Max. dew point: 12°C (54°F) on various occasions Min. dew point: 9°C (16°F) on the 13th, 10:51 AM No. precipitation days (>=0.01"): 17 No. precipitation days (>=0.04"): 14 No. precipitation days (>=0.1"): 9 No. precipitation days (>=0.4"): 5 Max. rainfall rate (instantaneous): 3.35"/hr (85.1 mm/hr) on the 2nd, 3:43 PM Max. rainfall rate (10-min. avg.): 1.68"/hr (42.7 mm/hr) for the 2nd, 3:40–3:50 PM Daily, hourly and 5-minute charts: Weather boxes for two main AP's for Rome area: Anomalies for December [for Ciampino AP; relative to 1991-2020 raw normals]: Average high: +0.7°C (+1.2°F) Mean: +0.2°C (+0.3°F) Average low: –0.3°C (–0.5°F) Precipitation: –18.5 mm (–0.73"; 82% of normal) Annual anomalies: Average high: +0.7°C (+1.2°F) Mean: +0.6°C (+1.0°F) Average low: +0.4°C (+0.7°F) Precipitation: +0.4 mm (+0.02"; 100% of normal)

December 2021 SummaryMuch warmer than normal (+3.3 °F/+1.8 °C) and much drier than normal (46% of normal precipitation). However, because of excellent radiational cooling conditions with clear skies and calm wind, there was a lack of very warm min temps. The highest daily min of the month was only 68 °F/20 °C at both my PWS and the COOP station, the lowest Dec highest min since 2012. This month was also unusual in that it was a warmer than normal month whose diurnal range was larger than normal. As a result of these conditions, relative humidity was higher than any other month this year since temp was allowed to drop to dew point very early in the night. Fog or mist formed on half of days. It was also the sunniest month in total sun hours since... December 2019. It felt really sunny too but it was quite close to average in reality. We also say goodbye to Melbourne Airport, as I'll now be doing the monthly summaries from Essendon Airport only. I will also be using the all time averages for comparisons, as the site was offline for half of the 1991-2020 period so it wouldn't be overly representative. Annual Summary:In terms of the year as a whole, well it sucked. Temps were below average in most months, it was the 3rd cloudiest since records began in 1999, and there was a notable lack of extreme heat (February and March I'm looking at you.) Plus I think we had the 5th coldest November on record, with a 4 day stretch of temps below 15.5C in the city which apparently hasn't happened in the 150 years or so that Melbourne has been keeping records. The two best months this year were probably December and May, the two worst were November and March.

The recent trend of warm Decembers in Toronto has been...rude, in the one month I want it to be cold. 5 days above 10C in a latitude with 9 hours of daylight feels kind of egregious. Daytime High +3.6C above normal, Nighttime Low +4.0C above normal... Precip 17% above normal and snowfall 12% above normal though.

Mild, wet and very cloudy relative to average. 2021 was one of, if not the cloudiest year on record.

December here ended up well above average, minimums especially, due to lots of cloud & this too causing well above average rainfall & below average sunshine. After a relatively mild fall, December ended up being a fiercely cold start to winter. It was almost as cold as February was this year and colder than an average January, which makes January the mildest winter month this year by a wide margin, not something you see very often! Average high: -12.9C (normal: -8.0C) Average low: -23.2C (normal: -18.3C Mean temperature: -18.0C (normal: -13.2C) Warmest high: 5.2C (Dec 1st)* Warmest low: -0.9C (Dec 1st)* Coldest high: -28.9C (Dec 30th and 31st) Coldest low: -39.7C (Dec 30th) Precipitation total: 9.9mm (normal: 12.9mm) Precipitation days: 10 (normal: 9.7) * Unfortunately a few hours of data is missing for December 1st which had both the warmest high and low of the month, so I've used the warmest hourly readings available on Environment Canada's site.

Great month to round out an overall shitty year. I received much more snowfall than the airport though. I'd estimate around double or slightly less than double what the airport got.

December 2021 Summary
It was an above average December temperature wise, in fact the mildest here since the legendary December 2015. Still this month's anomaly was less than half that month, at around +5 (December 2015 was over +10). It was also a very dry month, continuing the trend of November and becoming the first drier than average December since 2017. The month had few notable weather events, aside from a dusting of snowfall on the morning of the 24th (however no white Christmas as it melted that day) and a daily record high on the 11th which was accompanied by severe thunderstorm warnings within the NYC forecast area.
Annual 2021 Summary
It was a warmer than average year in general, although the peak of summer was below average. The fall months were generally very warm and summerlike, especially in September and October, which continues recent trends. The winter months were generally milder than average (save for February), and the spring months were warmer as well (save for May), with March 26th reaching 82 degrees (which was my weather highlight of the year). June was a nice dry summer month, but the summer was all ruined as multiple tropical storms and remnant lows impacted the area from July thru September, bringing the wettest July thru September period since 2011. Aside from TC Ida in September and an October Nor'easter, the fall saw few rainy days. Notably, November produced the worst tornado outbreak here since 1989's (which also occurred in November) as on the 13th 6 tornadoes touched down in Long Island alone. This was likely driven by much warmer than normal sea surface temperatures, along with the abnormally active tropical lows.

Overall, December was average in terms of temperature and sunshine but below average in terms of rainfall. It was a fairly decent summer month, although it could have been improved by more rain and storm activity.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2021 was a cool and cloudy year. Sunshine was 201 hours below average, while the annual mean temperature was 0.5°C below average. Rainfall was 131.8mm above normal, and there were 22 extra rain days. Overall, I'd give this year a C grade. The spring precipitation peak was nice, but the cloudiness of autumn was somewhat depressing. Winter was also unexciting, with few strong cold fronts, excessive stability and no sub 10°C highs. Hopefully next year will be better!
I will switch to the Laverton station for my 2022 summaries. It was open for the entire 1991-2020 period, so its averages are complete, unlike the Essendon station. This will also mean that jgtheone and I won't post be posting summaries for the same station.
