From Pilko's chat on Weather FB Page... "Another glorious morning here in the Top End again although a warmer one as compared to previous nights. The temp only dipping down to 21.4 and that no doubt was partly due to the cloud cover which acts very much like a blanket. Interesting to note that models are getting keen on a decent wet surge developing across north QLD in coming days before spreading south. This morning several of the models actually give the Top End a bit of a drink as well as moisture is dragged down from the Arafura Sea into a developing trough well to our east. Now this all comes down to timing and positioning, or as we call it, the angle of the dangle. But it’s certainly something to keep an eye on. Again it’s not set in stone but all models have North QLD getting increased action in coming days and this morning we have seen EC and CMC include parts of the Top End as well. Access has activity for eastern parts of the Territory but not including Darwin. GFS keeps it all well East of the Territory . There certainly is no shortage of activity across the Arafura Sea as Doug has been posting of late so there certainly is some potential. I guess we have had our weeks worth of dry so …"

Another magical dry season day....I visited Government House, the home of the Administrator of the Northern Territory. Once a year they open the house and grounds to the general public to have a look-see. Its one of the oldest buildings in Darwin, built in the 1870's and has surived 3 destructive cyclones ( 1897, 1937 and 1974 ) and was damaged by Japanese bombs in 1942. The house has entertained many dignitaries, including the Queen of England ( she stayed there overnight in 2000 I think it was ) and various Prime Ministers. The gardens are a superb feature of the property and are beautifully maintained. They feature tropical trees, palms and plants from around the tropical world. For the weather minded of us, the temps varied between 26c at 10.00am and 30c at 2.00pm, with dp's in the mid teens and winds blowing from the south east..... Anyway, here's some pics

Bloody hell ! perhaps winter really is coming .... Models are indicating a north west cloudband with some unseasonal rain....I am somewhat skeptical at this point deep in the dry season, but historically it has happened before. Very unusal modelling for the Top End in late June !

If these forecasts come off, it will really be one for the archives.... sub 20c mins, 27c maxes and cloudy with a chance of light rain ! Almost unheard of at this time of the year !

Quite a remarkable satellite map tonight that is showing a huge mass of cloud streaming down from the Arafura Sea.. Radar echos are currently picking up some action but most likely it’s just virga at the moment. It does look as though some may be reaching the ground ( or sea) well to the west but certainly tomorrow we should see a sprinkle or two, followed by a couple of damp days mid week. Interesting looking at this but if it was mid January we would be discussing what looks like a cyclonic type signature 🤔 Very strange indeed; as is the 25c overnight min temp ( 5c above average ). Bring on winter !

So it begins... not your typical dry season satellite image for the Top End that's for sure! Anyone around Darwin had any spots of rain yet? Blowing an absolute gale in the northeast top end this morning too.

It is set ups like these that cause the Darwin region to experience some fairly cold days in relation to normal. Fairly thick cloud cover coupled with a southerly surge are going to keep the majority of the NTs temperatures a few degrees below average. Alice Springs is looking at a chilly high of 15°C tomorrow (Tuesday), average for June is 19°C. While remaining at around that temp for the remainder of the week. Up in the Top End, a usually balmy area seeing highs of around 31°C at this time of year is expecting a high of 29°C tomorrow before plummeting to a chilly 26°C on Wed, Thurs and Friday. Most of the Top End is forecast to see similar temperatures. Southerners may laugh at this however the temperature is relative to what we are used to up in Darwin and the rest of the Top End. So 26°C would feel similar to what Melbournites would feel at 10°C. Todays top temp was only 28.8c, so likely 5 consecutive days below 30c. In past set ups similar to this Darwin has seen daytime highs as low as 21.1°C. It's unlikely this event will go lower then that record but I always say "Never say Never". Chart below is Access G wind speed and direction at 12noon Tuesday June 28.

Industry Northern Territory ⚠️Cold weather warning for Northern Territory producers⚠️ The BOM have advised an out of season weather event is forecast for producers in the areas from the Katherine to Tennant Creek through to Mount Isa and Longreach. Temperatures are expected to be 8 to 14°c below average for this time of year and could see 15-30mm of unseasonal rainfall over a few days with isolated heavier falls. Producers should note that, the rapid change in temperature could cause stress to livestock, particularly those who are in low body condition (1-2) or more vulnerable animals such as early weaners. From local weather guru Jamie Pilkington. ( source: PCOW FB page ) "Good morning trendsetters!! It’s bloody near cold here in the Top End this morning, with fresh to occasionally strong east to south east winds making it rather chilly. This morning the minimum dropped to 19.1 degrees and there was even a few light showers around. You just gotta love that smell of damp earth tho 😍 It’s going to get “cold” for us softies in the north. As Doug posted yesterday, tomorrow looks as cold as it gets up here with a temp maxing out at 25 if it’s cloudy and wet, which it’s expected to be. There is expected to be up to 20mm of rain as well in the Darwin area, heavier as you travel across central parts in a south east direction towards QLD and about the NE Top End. The maps this morning show a huge feed of cloud and moisture pouring into central parts of the country from the north. So far rain totals have been light to non existent but these will begin to increase from later today as a trough begins to amplify thru the central NT before heading east. It will remain windy as a strong high over southern Australia creates a squeezing effect on the gradients over northern parts, making it feel even colder. Extremely remarkable weather for the NT so I must apologise to our souther counterparts about our excitement up here, rain at this time of year is akin to snow down there in January. I fly out to Cairns tomorrow so that’s a let down for QLD but you can bet your muddy boots it belts down rain across Darwin from that point! Talk about taking one for the team 🙄🤦♂️🤦♂️ Have a great day troops. Will update as things pick up" 😉

So far today ( 3.45pm ) the Airport had reached a max temp of 25.3c. If it fails to rise higher than this value, it will be the 5th coldest June day on record. Coldest days in June 2007 - 22.7c 1963 - 24.2c 2011 - 24.8c 1949 - 24.9c 2022 - 25.3c ( preliminary )
