The 'Dry'.....it's almost upon us in the Deep North. The calendar and convention tells us the 1st of May is the official start to the 'dry season' with the season running from the start of May to the end of September in the Northern Territory capital, Darwin. Of course seasonal variability and prevailing weather systems sometimes say otherwise. Generally, the second half of April is when the showers and storms taper off significantly and May is the month when the first of the monster south easterly surges of drier air push their way into the Tropics. Here are some KPI's (key performance indicators ) of the 'Dry' Nights min temps below 20c ( and if below 15c makes the front page of the local newspaper ) Daytime max temps below 30c ( few and far between in this day and age ) Zero rain for 5 calendar months ( not all that common, but happened in 2017 May-Sept ) Grass and bushfires that burn out a huge percentage of land. Meterologically, the 'dry' ain't here yet, no south easterly surge, and a later in the week/early May infusion of moist tropical air to move in from the east. However, today was the first day in a loooong time that felt 'dryish'. An overnight min of 24c and a max of 35.2c doesn't seem like an indicator of the 'cooler' season, except that the humidity and DP's were way down at 40% and 18c respectively. After months of DP's up around 25c and humidity in the 70-80% range, one could really feel the change of seasons in the air. The first fires of the season on the Radar today First day with below 20 dew points and away the fires go. Anyways.... I'm calling today a dry season kinda day, but the wet ain't done just yet.

With the changing of the seasons, the BOM is forecasting a week or so of very warm ( well above the long term mean of 32.1c ) max temps at the Airport. The 36c max temps, if they come off, would equal the May record set back in 1942. Daily ( by the month ) max temp records Forecasts well above the mean for May

Bureau of Meteorology ยท This week's total forecast rainfall reflects both the end of the wet season across northern Australia, and the first significant cold snap for the south east of the country. For northern Australia, the 1st of May marks the start of the dry season. Apart from showers about the eastern Top End and the north-east Queensland coast, this week is shaping up to be mostly dry - Darwin can expect plenty of sunshine and maximum temperatures reaching 35 and 36 degrees, although it will remain humid. For south-east and eastern Australia, a run of mild and calmer days to start the week will precede the first wintry cold snap of the season. A cold front will approach South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania late on Tuesday and into Wednesday and then push into New South Wales and the ACT by Thursday. People across the south-east can expect showers, local hail and cold, blustery winds. Below-average temperatures will lead to alpine snow. The exception to all this will be Western Australia - Perth can look forward to mild days and plenty of sunshine all week.

What a difference between the east and west coasts of the NT today ! Darwin and the 'dry season' is biting deep as we experience hot temps, very low DP's and cloudless skies. The pic is looking west up my street, allready the verges and nature strips are dieing off and the sky has that washed out blue so typical of the 'Dry'. Meanwhile over on the Gove Peninsular at Nhulunbuy, it is the total opposite with low cloud, rain, high DP's. the wet season often hangs on until the end of June, sometimes into early July in the north east of the Top End.
