April 2022 Summary, SheffieldA cool start with NW'ly winds and even some snow, but nothing unusual for early April. Thereafter, it became warm mid-month, and also dry. The wind changed from the east in the last half of the month, with, thankfully, a lot of sun rather than North Sea low cloud, which only affected the area badly on two days, the 27th-28th. It was a drier and sunnier than average month. It was a very good month for outdoor activities meaning I got a lot done. It was milder than average, and a decent April altogether.

April was an absolute horse's ass of a month, just persistently cold aside from a handful of days and featured a major snowstorm 2/3rds of the way through the month. We didn't have any abnormally extreme cold snaps but it just refused to warm up most of the month (including nearly a consecutive week of sub-freezing highs in the middle of the month) and basically just felt like an endless continuation of late March. In addition to the weather itself sucking, Environment Canada shit the bed and had a week of missing precipitation data right when the snowstorm happened, which was our biggest precipitation event of the month (as well as several days of missing data). Thankfully we have another WMO-standard weather station in town, the one I get my sunshine hours from, so once they publish their monthly summary sometime this week I'll be able to get more accurate precipitation data. Speaking of sunshine hours, this felt like the gloomiest month in quite a long time and I wouldn't be surprised at all if it ended up below average. Average high: 7.7C (normal: 11.2C) Average low: -4.1C (normal: -1.9C Mean temperature: 1.8C (normal: 4.7C) Warmest high: 18.1C (Apr 30th) Warmest low: 1.0C (Apr 27th) Coldest high: -5.6C (Apr 12th) Coldest low: -10.7C (Apr 11th) Precipitation total (incomplete): 3.0mm (normal: 22.7mm) Precipitation days (incomplete): 4 (normal: 8.3)

April here was above average, though with slightly cooler than average nights. It was also very dry which caused several heathland & forest fires in Hampshire & neighbouring counties. Sunshine was a little above average & a warm spell from the middle of the month gave the highest temperatures of the year so far, in contrast to the first two days of the month which were chilly with sleet showers. Stats from my PWS Av. Max 16.1C (+2.4C)* Av. Min 5.3C (-0.4C)* Mean 10.7C (+1.0C)* Highest Max 21.7C (15th) Lowest Min -1.2C (10th) Lowest Max 10.2C (1st) Highest Min 9.9C (12th) Rainfall 16.1mm (32%)* Days with Rainfall 9 Days with > 1.0mm 4 Days with Sleet 2 Sunshine 206.4hrs (111%)* Min UV 3 Max UV 5 Min Sea Temp 9.3C Max Sea Temp 12.0C Mean Sea Temp 10.4C *using Thorney Island 1991-2020 averages

Additional stats:
Median high: 63.0 (-2.2 f from mean) Median low: 35.0 (+0.4 f from mean)
True daily mean: 49.6 (-0.3 f from mean) True mean dew: 19.8 True mean RH%: 34.5%
Highest dew: 43.9 on the 22nd (6.6 c) Lowest dew: -7.4 on the 13th (-21.9 c)
Mean 3 PM temp: 60.8 (16.0 c) Mean 3 PM dew: 17.2 (-8.2 c) Mean 3 PM RH%: 19.7%
Precipitation hours: 1.5
*Sunshine hours: 323 *Sunshine percent: 80.9%
*estimated from solar radiation data
Very low humidity due to the dryness and interestingly the median high was noticeably cooler than the mean, opposite of the winter months.

Gaypril 2022 Crummary for Gay Bay and Crappleton, WI Back in 1984, Lou Gramm of the pop group Foreigner wailed into a microphone, "I wanna know what cold iiiiis...I want you to show meeeeeee..." Well, look no further, Louie. Here I present to you: Le Subarctique Fest Extraordinaire du Avril du 2022
Green Bay Mean temp: 42.0 F (5.6 C) (-1.6 F) Precipitation: 3.10" (78.7 mm) (+0.45") Appleton (note that because of the sheer incompetence of the guys running this station, observation times roll over at 7 AM - meaning for the most part everything's a day off)
Mean temp: 40.3 F (4.7 C) (-3.8 F) Precipitation: 2.95" (74.9 mm) (+0.13") My House Mean temp: 42.1 F (5.6 C) Precipitation: 2.80" (71.1 mm) Sunshine hours: I dunno, 25? 'Twas gloomy and drizzly as hell The Rundown What a gay, cold, cloudy, drizzly, horse's ass month. It was the coldest Gaypril since 2018 (even beating out 2020 which was the first and only Gaypril in my 30 years on the face of this planet not to see a SINGLE 70 F (21 C) day) with way more "storm chances" than actual storms, more overcast and drizzle than Scotland in November, a high of 39 in the final week, and a bunch of other BS I'd rather not live through again.
Gotta give credit where credit was due. On Tuesday the 12th, there was some surprisingly good thunder for a storm that dropped less than a tenth of an inch. I was working late and the power flickered, one of my co-workers pulled up the radar and there were beautiful shades of bright pink I don't think I've ever seen before. Of course they missed us, staying about 15 miles to the north, but it was still an interesting evening. And then we have the weekend of the 23rd and 24th - it's about time the nice weather falls on a weekend for a change. Bloody fantastic; I thought it would be another Fappleton fizzaaaaaaah but the warm air moved in like they said it would and it was glorious. I hope everybody was at least able to get over their fears of "muh covid" enough to at the very least, pull out a chair, sit on their porch/patio/parking lot/nearest park bench, and enjoy the nice weather. Food tastes better and video games are more fun when enjoyed outside on a nice day like that.
But other than those fluke nice days, and a couple others toward the end that surprised me by making it to the proper side of the 60 - bloody hell! After the first week and a half, during which we saw literally about two and a half hours of sun, and got a whole bunch of rain, drizzle, and even snow - we had a cold but sunny weekend and a strong warmup into the second full week. This warmup included three days with highs in the lower 60s and some nice storm action - then on Wednesday night the big round of storms came through, knocked the temperatures right down to the 30s, and brought Hurricane McGhee with it - don't you love when you have to dig through the ditches to re-collect your rubbish after it's fallen out of your bin that's been knocked over three times from the wind? Saturday of Easter weekend was a fun day for me, but cold as hell with a morning flurry; then on Monday the 18th we had a disgusting slushy inch as it just snizzled all damn day. We finally hit our first 70 on Saturday the 23rd - only more than a week behind the average! - and then the final week (other than a fluke "heat wave" of seasonable temps on Friday) went right back down the shitter.
FUCK YOU to the NWS and several TV "meteorologists" for predicting several storm chances through the month that never materialized or at most turned into gay drizzle. On one hand, we had three thunder days (12th, 13th, little rumble on the 30th); on the other, given the forecasts there should have been eight to ten.
Outlook for Gay? I'm thinking more of the same, cold, cloudy, precipitation pretty close to bang-on the average but distributed between 27 drizzly days. Why not?
