Took advantage of the unseasonably chilly weather yesterday and went to Wawayanda State Park. Although the official station had temps in the low 60s during the afternoon, I think it was in the upper 50s here with the higher elevation. You could tell some of the visitors dressed in shorts and t-shirts were unprepared. Others were wrapped up in blankets lol.

Some various recent pics I have taken here. First group is from June 18th when it was warm and humid (24C with a 17C dew) followed by a thunderstorm Building up from the south, skies were darkening and the black flies were hunting for blood.

Perfect birthday weather for me with a high/low of 93F/67F, blue dome skies all day, and most importantly, afternoon dewpoints that dropped well into the 50s. June 25, 2022 will go down as one of the top 10 weather days of the year, and the best weather in my lifetime on my birthday
Taking advantage of summer weather, here was yesterday's glorious sunset over LI Sound
June 21 at the south shore beaches, facing the Atlantic Ocean. SE'ly winds off the relatively cool ocean rolled in marine layer on what was otherwise a warm, sunny day
Unirrigated cool season grasses aren't taking the relatively dry recent weather well. Less than an inch of rain has fallen in the past 3 weeks

Hiking 22-24 June 2022 Afternoon hike on the 22nd around Contos Beach, SW WA. Unique to this area are the bushfires that scarred the vegetation last summer resulting in fires up to the beach. Creating a really post-apocalytpic vibe. Weather conditions: NW winds, 18-19C, scattered light rain, weak front approaching.

The drought is getting pretty intense. Actually one of the worst ones I've experienced in Umeå. This was two days ago on campus. The following are from today: Grandparents' lawn Not the worst I've seen however... Found some yellow tall grass which I love the look of. All grass is not scorched, only the most exposed grass, especially in areas that saw less precipitation from local showers, and where the soil is coarse and/or thin. I've cherry picked the best examples.

On Saturday we took a daytrip to Örnsköldsvik an hour south of Umeå. I was pretty shocked to see cacti and yucca planted in the flowerbeds. They were planted completely in the soil, as opposed to how exotic plants usually are planted in easily movable pots. And on sunday yesterday we went to the High Coast and climbed Skuleberget, a ~290 m tall mountain that used to be completely submerged by the sea 13 000 years ago, sporting the tallest coastline in the world. We took the longer path on the way up. Along a long rocky slope. I was really confused by this. I couldn't make out if it had become twisted from deterioration or if it was some sort of mountain bike trail and was supposed to be twisted. It was very warm going up as the sun baked on the sun-facing rocky slopes. But after we'd looked around in the cabin and managed to cool down, it was pretty cool on the windy and half-overcast mountaintop. Or I suppose you'd call it a hilltop in the English language. I can't say it's the most impressive view I've seen but it was decent. It's kinda unique. It kinda looks like a mountain range that was flooded with water, but it's more like the opposite, a seabed that receded. Kinda looks like if you took Norway's coast and squished it tbh. In the distance, Finland can be (not) seen (since they're flat as a pancake). On the way down we took the steeper cliffside path. Apparently you're supposed to do the opposite because they were saying it was dangerous to go down that path because it was so steep, and that it was better to go down one of the other paths. I didn't think it was too bad. Honestly it was nice that it was so steep on the way down. Steady down gradients are really fatiguing, and rapid inclines are too. It was a breeze getting down imo. And it wasn't even that steep. Okay, sometimes it was pretty steep. But it was a much more interesting path. A lot of maple, and also there were some of Sweden's northernmost natural linden thriving on the south-facing rocks. A glacier cave. Nice views. As well as some very lush forests further down. A view of the mountain from the bottom. There were quite a few people who were climbing up the rockface with climbing gear and cables. And a view of the brackish Bothnia sea.

This is the view down one of the steepest hills in Sheffield - a 20% gradient. Just went out and did a ton of hill-climb repeats on it on the bicycle. 23 degrees temperature, so not too bad, and I got my fastest ever average speed! Thought I'd share the view as it's such a lovely sunny day.
