Looked at weather in parts of the Central U.S. and it seems meteorological summer is literally ending tomorrow (as of 21 Sep), and came up with this question.

For me it ended on the 9th, which is quite early for the end of summer (thanks Hurricane Kay), but it didnโt feel autumn-like until the 15th. For context, here is the meteorological summer end date for past years. 2021: 25 Sep 2020: 17 Oct (heat waves) 2019: 17 Sep 2018: 3 Oct 2017: 14 Sep 2016: 13 Sep 2015: 18 Oct (heat waves) 2014: 27 Oct 2013: 18 Sep 2012: 4 Oct

What's the definition of summer?

I am referring to meteorological summer, not astronomical summer. The reason some summer end dates for me in the past were quite late is because summerlike temperatures were persistent until then.

A usually months-long period of time that the hottest temperatures of the year occur in.

summer started on dickcember 31 and ended on jackoffuary 1.
Winter is still in full afterburner as of septictember 22. Foreskincunst suggests no change to the gay status quo.

I'll say this week as we get the last gasps of 80s and milder nights. Friday will struggle to reach 60 F/16 C and will feel truly autumnal.

Hard to say. We got our first genuinely springlike weather (maximums around 20c) in the last week of August and have had a few of these days since then, including today. However, most of this month has been rather cool and felt more like an extension of winter.

Still ongoing but will undoubtably end soon now.
However, despite the small cool/showery blip set to sweep through the region on Friday it's been mostly dry and mild/warm (~25c+ during the day) for much of this month and that looks set to return this weekend into next week.

August 31, like it does every year everywhere in the temperate and subtropical zones.
Today may end up as the last day with midsummer conditions. High of 93F here, but I see pleasant 70s and 80s in the forecast otherwise, so it appears the South is settling into an autumnal pattern starting on September 23 this year.

'Winter' commenced on 27th of June with a sub 30c max temp. This was the start of a wintery 21 day run of sub 30c max temps. And the month of July saw every min temp sub 20c, in fact the mean monthly min for July 2022 was only 17.0c, the second lowest since records began in 1941. Starting on 1st August, not a day below 30c, and the last sub 20c min was on the 27th August. So 'winter' lasted about 6 weeks.....

So I just use the June 1-August 31 definition as meteorological summer typically.
But in terms of when summer weather ended, that's hard to say. We had a brutally hot period from about July 1-August 16. Since then it's still been hot but not brutally so. We had a mild spell in the second week of September, but then it got hot again. Our average high this month is 89.0ยฐF (31.7ยฐC). Is that fall? It's cooler than our August 2022 average high of 95.2ยฐF (35.1ยฐC), but closer to the average daily August high than the average daily September high. Starting Monday we're supposed to have highs around 85ยฐF (29ยฐC) and lows around 55ยฐF (13ยฐC). Those nights are fall-like, but the days may still feel somewhat summery for a while yet. The GFS has us getting warm to hot days until a fantasy-land cold front around hour 372.

Felt like fall this morning but temperatures, as expected for late September and October, will be expected to feel summery untill late October. I call this period "dark summer".
