The winter solstice is coming soon in the Northern Hemisphere, and to celebrate the winter weather, I have decided to make a Chile climate battle. We will compare the climates of Chile's major cities, going from north to south.
This climate battle is quite long, if you will, and many of the climates are quite similar, so please pick your top two favorite climates.
Keep reading to the end, you may find an Easter egg somewhere.
Arica
Located in the Atacama desert, the driest non-polar desert in the world, Arica is one of the world's driest cities. But it isn't even Chile's driest city.
Iquique
Iquique's climate is just like Arica's, except it is sunnier...and even drier.
Calama
Calama is a mining town in the Andes foothills. At an elevation of 2,260 m (7,410 ft), Calama has a very unique climate, with pleasant days, cold nights, minimal rainfall, and an overabundance of sunshine.
Antofagasta
Copiapó
Copiapo does not experience extreme heat, even though it is located inland and in a desert.
La Serena
Finally, a climate that gets some rain.
Valparaíso
The first non-desert climate we have encountered. Valparaiso is a port city 120 km (75 mi) away from the capital, Santiago, and is the center of Chile's second-biggest urban area. It has pretty cloudy winters, which will be a recurring theme from here on south.
Santiago
The capital and by far the largest city in Chile. Santiago has over 6 million of Chile's 18 million residents.
Curicó
From here on south, Chile's climates lose their aridity and become rainy.
Chillan
Concepción
A port city and the third of Chile's three major urban areas.
Temuco
Those are some chilly summer nights.
Valdivia
Valdivia's June is the rainiest average month of any city in this climate battle.
Osorno
The southernmost climate with any semblance of summer warmth.
Puerto Montt
The country south of here is sparsely populated, due to the rugged terrain, inaccessibility, and cold rainy climate.
Puerto Aysén
Don't know what sunshine hours here are like, but they must be very low.
Coyhaique
Inland from Puerto Aysen, Coyhaique has a much drier climate.
Punta Arenas
Punta Arenas is Chile's southernmost city and has a subarctic...I mean subantarctic climate.
Easter Island
