"Gonna drink some beer, gonna get hiiiigh gonna drink beeer"About halfway through, this July has proved to be a stark contrast to the craptastic May Gay and Pune so far this year. Monthly temp anomolies for the first 14 days at the AP.... Record high: 95°F (35°C) on the 4th Record low: 68°F (20°C) on the 1st Average high: 90.6°F (+1.0°F) Daily mean (max/min / 2): 81.5°F (+1.2°F) Average low: 72.4°F (+1.4°F) And the first 14 days at my PWS: Record high: 94.8°F (34.9°C) on the 4th Record low: 70.4°F (21.3°C) on the 1st Average high: 89.1°F (31.7°C) Daily mean (true): 79.9°F (26.6°C) Average low: 73.1°F (22.8°C) Precipitation: 4.76" (120.9 mm) In addition to reliable summer warmth finally taking hold and aside from the inevitable fizzers here and there, this month has seen 8 thunder days (at least a few rumbles of thunder) thus far; 7 back-to-back days from the 3rd to 9th. Let's hope this trend continues into the second half of July, as well as into August.

Crazy that parts of Europe on a similar latitude to Hobart such as Sardinia are experiencing so many days over 40°C consecutively

I was in the Sunshine Coast region of Queensland last week. There we've had beautiful crisp nights and mornings, mild days, impressive diurnal ranges and a couple of heavy downpours. Much better than the disappointing mild lows, lack of rain and narrow diurnals that have been plaguing Melbourne lately.
Last week at the Sunshine Coast airport (Columns are, from left to right, date, day of the week, low temperature, high temperature and precipitation)
Vs last week in Laverton
I experienced "better" winter weather in the Sunshine Coast (27°S at sea level) than if I had stayed in Melbourne. Just goes to show how mild and dry this July has been in Melbourne so far.

Summary for the first half of July (1-15):
Average high: 14.4c Average low: 9.1c Mean temp: 11.8c
Highest temp: 16.8c Lowest temp: 5.4c

As mentioned already, it has been a very mild and dry July so far. Yet, we somehow had 10 rain days which almost matches the total amount. The first half of the month has been dominated by mild westerly fronts bringing a whole lot of wind but only a bit of drizzle each time. Not great.

This is the fastest I've seen a heavy shower go from 0-100. The left pic was 17:40, the right pic 17:45. The red and pink just came out of nowhere lol

Been pretty warm here, especially the nighttime temps. 2 days with 80F lows this month and didn't get below 81F last night! Warmest high has been 97F. Avg so far this month is at 94.2/76.1F. Good chance for thunderstorms this afternoon! The airport has had better luck with precip than me so far this July - it has recorded 4.03" of rain but I've just had 1.18".

JFC !! check this out .... this is seriously shithouse !!! Heat index Hits 66C at Persian Gulf International Airport ( source: Weatherzone ) Most people living on Earth today will never experience the type of heat observed at Iran’s Persian Gulf International Airport on Sunday. A rare combination of extremely high temperatures and abundant atmospheric moisture created oppressive heat along the southern coastline of Iran on Sunday, July 16. While air temperature observations give us a good idea about how hot it is outside, other elements like wind and humidity also affect how hot the weather feels to our bodies. In general, windy weather makes us feel cooler and humid weather makes us feel hotter. Meteorologists can estimate how hot or cold the weather feels by using equations that factor in air temperature and other atmospheric variables. One of the most widely-used methods for estimating the impacts of hot weather is called the ‘heat index’, which combines air temperature and humidity. On Sunday, searing heat from the interior of Iran clashed with humid air flowing off the very warm waters of the Persian Gulf. At one point in the afternoon, the temperature at the Persian Gulf International Airport reached 40ºC (104ºF), with a relative humidity of 65% (the dew point was 32ºC/90ºF). This created an apparent temperature of 66.7ºC (152ºF) based on the Heat Index. Image: Observations from the Persian Gulf International Airport on Sunday, with the day’s peak heat index value highlighted by the green box. Source: NOAA This combination of heat and humidity is beyond the threshold that is considered safe for human bodies, based on research by scientists at Pennsylvania State University. There are no official records for heat index. However, observations in excess of 80ºC (176ºF) have been observed in the past, including at Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, on July 8, 2003. Other global hot spots on Sunday: The middle of summer in the Northern Hemisphere is always a time for extreme heat, and this season has been no exception. The oppressive heat observed at the Persian Gulf International Airport was one of many exceptional temperature extremes that occurred north of the equator on Sunday. Image: Modelled surface air temperature anomalies on Sunday, July 16. Red areas show where the air near the ground was warmer than average for this time of year. Source: ClimateReanalyzer.org The highest temperature recorded on Earth on Sunday, July 16, was just over 53ºC (128ºF). This sweltering temperature was observed at several weather stations in California’s Death Valley National Park, including the well-known and aptly named hotspots of Furnace Creek and Stovepipe Wells. China also saw extreme heat on Sunday, with a weather station at Sanbao registering a maximum temperature of 52.2ºC. If valid, this will be China’s highest temperature on record, according to weather historian Maximiliano Herrera.

ral31 The opposite is the case for me, I've struck luck with isolated showers/storms bringing substantially more rain than the AP (most recent example being the night before yesterday, where my PWS received 0.73" of rainfall, but only 0.14" at the AP; with 5.61" MTD at my PWS):

greysrigging I can't imagine how nasty a 32C dew point must feel :puke: China breaking a national heat record is newsworthy too. I noticed Turpan reported 48.7C on Ogimet, which is above the wiki-box record of 48.1 but below the 49 mentioned in the climate description. Turpan is at my latitude, just below 43 degrees north, but averages about 40/25 in July and -2/-11 in January. Milwaukee averages 28/18 and -1/-8. Any all-time records broken in North America yet? Canada has seen a hot summer and so has the southern US. Edit: Here are two on July 8th in northern Canada Fort Good Hope, NT (66.2N) 37.4C / 99.3F - previous record 35C on three dates Norman Wells, NT (65.3N) reached 37.9C / 100.2F - previous record also 35C. 37.9 was at " Norman Wells Climate" Unfortunately the weather at the time was smoke with only 2km visiblity Norman Wells A is the default one Environment Canada gives you when you click for the forecast. It's currently averaging 22.0C for July which is Köppen's cut-off. It only reached 37.3C on the 8th.

A new heat wave hitting the southern half of Spain... today's highs:
Andújar (Jáen): 44.8C Montoro (Córdoba): 44.6C
Córdoba AP: 44.5C Granada AP: 43.7C
There was an outlier of 47.0C in Villarrobledo, Albacete... looks faulty.
Rome (Ciampino AP) recorded 38.0C today, and tomorrow should approach its all-time high of 40.6C.
----
Far down there, Argentina is having a cold snap. In the Patagonian steppe, Perito Moreno (47°S) had a daily low of -22.5C ( SYNOP) and Río Mayo (45°S) recorded -19.0C. The magic of calm nights and snow cover. San Antonio Oeste had a minimum of -11.2C, very notable for a coastal location at 40.5°S.
Let's see if the Buenos Aires Observatory can get below freezing tomorrow. The AP station and Palomar AF base will surely do.

Not a pleasant day over much of the CONUS today, with Excessive Heat Warnings (dark pink) and Heat Advisories (orange) over much of the southern part of the country, and Air Quality Alerts (gray) over much of the northern and eastern US.

Strange shit in Termoli, Italy. Apparently the dew point reached 31°C there yesterday. I now officially question the dew point readings of several Italian weather stations. I know it's humid over there, but this kind of dew point, c'mon.
