Finally getting some proper rain (87 mm on the 21st) and more seasonal temps: --- Meanwhile, Coldchurch has had a sickening couple of days with over 100 mm in total and fridge-like temps

Canberra On Track for Warmest July Max Temps On Record ( source: Weatherzone ) Canberra appears certain to break its record for the warmest average maximum temperatures in July since records began in 1939, while enduring a near-record run of frosty nights. Let's deal with those warm days first because July 2023 has been dry in the national capital, and exceptionally mild during daylight hours. As things stand now counting the max temp on July 25, the running average max for July 2023 is 14.1°C That's 0.4°C warmer than the old record of 13.7°C in 2019. Canberra's average July maximum is 12.7°C With less than a week remaining until the end of July and relatively warm northwesterlies buffeting the city on Sunday, there's no end to the unseasonably warm days in sight. The maximum temps forecast for Canberra until the end of the month are: July 26: 16°C (today) July 27: 16°C July 28: 15°C July 29: 17°C July 30: 18°C July 31: 17°C And based on forecasts for the next six days, the running average max could end up in the mid-14 degree range, breaking the old record by close to a full degree. But as mentioned, nights are another story... Canberra has been locked in a pattern of dry days with minimal rainfall (see down the page for rainfall stats) and cold frosty nights. Frost is of course hardly newsworthy in Canberra. With an average July minimum of 0.1°C, you expect frost more nights than not, especially when you factor in that temperatures at grass-level are usually a degree or two colder than the official air temp. Usually, Canberra gets a break from frost after a few nights as rain-bearing weather systems move through the ACT, raising the humidity and night-time temperatures. Not so much this July. As things stand this Wednesday, Canberra has just had its 11th consecutive night below zero, after a low of -5.3°C this morning. Thursday morning also looks like a frosty one, meaning it'll be 12 straight nights of subzero temps before Friday morning potentially stops the run with a forecast min of 1°C. In the last 30 years, Canberra has had just four streaks of subzero minimums lasting longer than 10 nights (in any month or combo of months). The longest were 14 nights in 1994 and 2002. Canberra's running minimum for July 2023 to date, as of Wednesday morning, was -0.6°C Lack of rainfall is also a factor here Canberra has had just 9.2 mm of rain for the month to date, due largely to rain-bearing frontal systems staying well south of the Australian mainland. This is also why the snowfields have barely had a top-up of late. The good news for Canberra water storages is that this is the first month this year when rainfall has not reached the monthly average. ^^ A critique of the above story by 'he whose name shall not be mentioned on WWF' ( I tend to agree with the points raised )

Significant heat expected here Thursday and Friday. NWS going for highs of 99ºF both days here, and for 100ºF+ inland to my west and south. Hopefully it hits 100ºF here and we get slight overperformance. It hasn't hit 100ºF at the airport since June 2021, which isn't that long ago, but IMBY it's been longer.

We've only had 5mm of rain so far this month at Essendon Ap, up to the 23rd of July. The record low rainfall for July here is 12.8mm, so we've got a good shot at breaking it. 8mm fell overnight, so now it's no longer the driest July on record and it's just a shit July.

It's a record I don't want to break because I like winter rain but if it's going to be this dry, it might as well be the driest. Now it's just shit, arguably worse than if it did break a record. It'll probably be like 0.1C off the warmest July too just to rub it in. Basically if it's going to be crap, be record crap

Kansas City has a similar thing - summers getting hotter but more stable, with 100F almost not happening at all anymore.
I have to wonder if this is a global phenomenon in humid continental climates. It would be interesting to see some data on that.

Here the reason is that massive low pressure systems have parked above us and won't budge, trapping all the heat in the Mediterranean.
This will likely be the most monotonous July in recent history in Turku. Practically same weather every day.

July has been disastrous throughout the UK, and August looks like it'll continue being awful for the next 2 weeks at least.
Even 2007 and 2012 had better spells of weather than this. We could get to mid August not seeing 23c.

Jyväskylä in Central Finland got 97.3 mm of rain yesterday, and already some 60 mm more today.
Normal precipitation in June is 79 mm...

Pretty warm day today in Sydney for midwinter norms. Not sure if July records were broken though... Sydney hit 25.2C on Sunday afternoon, with even higher temperatures in the western suburbs, with Penrith and Bankstown reaching 26C by 2.30pm. On Saturday the city hit 22C, after 24.4C on Friday – the highest temperature so far this month. In Brisbane, the temperature peaked at 25.7C, after a 25.4C day on Saturday – its warmest so far this month. The unusual warm winter weather comes as global temperatures shattered records this month, with July on track to be the hottest month ever recorded, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). One of the main factors contributing to the unusually high temperatures is the warm ocean conditions, a BoM meteorologist says.www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/jul/30/unseasonably-warm-winter-weather-sweeps-eastern-australia-with-sydney-set-to-reach-24c-degrees
