High today was only 0 (-18 c) after a -11 (-24 c) low. Also finally got some snow with 1.8β (5 cm) falling last night.
Sunday and Monday will still be frigid, although not as cold during the day, before a rapid warmup on Tuesday.

Some models ( and the usual suspect FB weather pages ) are predicting record breaking heat in the S E of AU towards the end of January.... ^^ That's extremely far out though. Gotta love inversions, I'm in a haven of wintry temps lost in an ocean of mildness:

Winter weather advisories have been issued down to the Gulf coast of Louisiana! Will most likely be freezing rain here in central LA and areas to my south. Maybe a bit of sleet. Snow will probably stay north of the LA/AR border for the most part. Haven't really had much in the way of wintry precip since Feb 2021.

Also coldest temps since Feb 2021 are forecast for Wednesday morning! 13F here (got down to 11F in Feb 2021 and 15F in Dec 2022). Under a wind chill advisory, with wind chills in the single digits expected.

Provisional wind gusts report from yesterday's rediculous wind event (and QLCS) That storm really exceeded my expectations. I was still in Durham when it was happening, and the rain was some of the hardest I've seen in my life. The power flickered a few times and winds gusted to 69 mph at RDU.
Although we didn't have power-related issues, that wind/rain combo was something, not often do I have rain blowing through the west-facing windows like that, as it's somewhat sheltered. Heard much more wind howling than rain falling even with 3-4"/hr rain rates as the squall line passed through. That wide swath of 65-75 mph wind gusts have gotta be some of the highest ever in a winter month (outside tornadoes/microbursts that is). Of course, I haven't seen a single flash of lightning or heard a rumble of thunder here, but thunderstorms aren't exactly common in the middle of winter here, so that one is par for the course.

Another Wind Advisory here today with gust up to 45 MPH. May also get a couple of snow squalls.
Yesterday morning started mild in the 50s but the temp steadily dropped down to about 40 F/4 C by sunset with gusty winds. Definitely felt a chill in the air as the day went on.

Nice example of a thermal inversion in the western Cascades in this current temperatures map from this afternoon. Yesterday the temperature stayed solidly within the 10s F throughout the whole day, from late on 01/12 through sometime during the day today.

The winter has been harsh in my area. We are currently on course to achieve a January as cold as January 2010, i.e the coldest of this century.

^^ C'mon mate... show some enthusiasm... ( Source: JWC FB Page ) Good afternoon all Early signs the major heat dome is pushing slightly more north on this mornings models and some of the afternoon models but itβs still there and raging This is the estimated temperature at Birdsville by the GFS model 26th January at 4am ππ³π³ Then the second image at 4pm same day! Few points are not exactly extremely low either with those sorts of temps in the 6-10 dew point range normally when it gets near those temps itβs well in the negatives! So that is horrid conditions We know one thing a big severe heatwave is coming question is will it be more interior or how the models had it last night all the way down to Adelaide and Victoria we are tending to think the first scenario but itβs a wait day by day thing or in our case run by run by the models - John This is brutal!!! ( notes// this guy does tend to exaggerate some.... )

Very cold again today at 8/-5 (-13/-21 c). Yesterday it was a novelty, today it got old, just so unpleasant and milder than yesterday so not even interesting. Really have no need for this weather, yes if itβs gonna be cold Iβd rather this than 20s boring shit but I wouldnβt miss this cold if it didnβt happen.
Just 170 miles north in Casper, it was -37 (-38 c). Now thatβs cold Iβd like to experienceβso much colder than anything Iβve experienced it would be cool to feel and so cold itβs actually interesting.
In Montana, over 30 stations dropped below-40, the coldest being -51 (-46 c) in Saco.

Tied the January 9th season low this morning of 16 F/-9 C. Likely to dip below that some point this week and the warmest highs are now forecast to only be in the 20s. Decent cold stretch.
Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 7PM tonight to 4PM tomorrow with 2-4 in (5-10 cm) of snow and perhaps a light glaze of ice.

The official Swedish low during the early January cold snap is now officially -44.6C in Vittangi Weather reporting is now significantly faster than just a few decades ago. But it still happens that certain values only reach us after the fact. It has now happened in January when the climate station in Vittangi came in after a break with a combined minimum temperature of -44.6Β°. We have booked the value on January 5.
Since it is a value from the regular measuring equipment, we have no problem approving it. It will thus be both the lowest temperature of this month and of the entire century so far in Sweden.
Vittangi in northern Lapland has a long past as one of our coldest stations. For example, the station has the still valid Swedish cold record for November with -43.0Β° on November 24-26, 1890. In addition, the record for the lowest monthly average temperature in Sweden is from Vittangi with -27.2Β° in February 1985.
You can say that order has now been restored with a station in Lapland being the very coldest. The lowest temperature of the century so far has otherwise been -44.0Β° in Storbo in northernmost Dalarna on February 4, 2001.
How cold was it in Karesuando? It is known that we unfortunately lost temperature data from several of our automatic stations during the coldest period. Question marks still remain about how cold it really was at most in Karesuando.
The station stopped providing temperature data at -43.6Β°. On good grounds, we can assume that it was even a little lower when it was coldest. But whether it was lower than in Vittangi cannot be said.
There has been a lot of information in the mass media about even lower temperatures. That's how it's always been during cold snaps and we don't doubt the information.
But climate statistics are not a smorgasbord where we can choose the data that best suits the moment. We must have continuity in the station network so that we can create normal values, return times, record values and more.
Then, of course, we can expand the regular station network afterwards, but that is another matter.

Today's highs. You can clearly see the rediculous temp contrast (for a non-CAD setup, but rather, a stalled cold front)

Edmonton international airport in Canada recorded -46.6c a few days ago. I did a cursory search and it seems that such a low temperature has never been recorded there this century.

Video of today's nearby tornado. Some areas of St. Lucie County to my north picked up between 4-5" of rain. I'm quite jealous of the latter.
