In your view, what's the isotherm that divides a subtropical climate from a temperate one. I personally use the isotherm of an average monthly mean of 10C in the coolest month.
So according to my isotherm:
Gulf coast cities such as Mobile and New Orleans are subtropical while inland Southern cities in the US like Birmingham and Jackson are temperate.
Eastern Australian coastal cities below 22 degrees south like Brisbane and Sydney are subtropical while highland cities such as Glen Innes and Canberra are temperate.
Southern Brazilian lowland cities like Florianopolis and Foz do Iguazu are subtropical while highland cities such as Sao Joaquim and Bom Jardim da Serra are temperate.
Southern Chinese cities like Fuzhou are subtropical while Central Chinese cities such as Wenzhou are temperate.

42ºF is the isotherm I use. Norfolk is subtropical, DC is not. Florence is subtropical, Milan is not, etc

They mean two different things to me. Something like the southeast US with hot summers and mild winters is subtropical, temperate is more like oceanic climates with cool summers. Sydney or Auckland would be warm temperate and London would be cool temperate.

The difference to me is about summer temperatures. Subtropical has hotter summers, temperate has milder ones.

The difference to me is about summer temperatures. Subtropical has hotter summers, temperate has milder ones. Funny you should say that^^ For me its about winter warmth/mildness.... the mere inclusion of the term 'tropical' in the descriptor word 'subtropical' screams out loud to SH folk, "this place doesn't really get cold, and sure as hell snow and ice is as rare as rocking horse poo...." Oh, the odd frost or 3 can happen every winter, but yeah/nah, no hard freezes... I mean even high latitude places can get warmth and heat in the summer months, so warmth and heat is the norm in any subtropical climate in the 7 or 8 warmer months... its what happens in the cooler 4 or 5 months that indicates 'subropicallity'.

Maybe the label "subtropical" should be tossed completely to end this tired old debate about what's subtropical or tropical or temperate.
Some people have suggested Med climates with all kinds of palm trees, winter flowering plants, and subtropical foliage are not subtropical due to summer dryness, or, some people also suggest that NYC is subtropical all due to Koppen's "Cfa" classification; or, places like Texas aren't subtropical all due to the rare extreme cold snap relative to a climate's normals. It's all getting a bit old and a meaningless label really.

10 C in the coldest month- GeoDiode and I agree on this coldest month isotherm. If we want to be pedantic, subtropical is a subcategory of the broader "temperate" thermal zone (non-tropical, non-polar). But in the narrow sense, "temperate" is cooler and closer to the poles than "subtropical".

Easily 5C+ for all months, zone 8a+ also, anyone who goes to places like Myrtle Beach, Raleigh, Savannah, etc. and claims its not subtropical is absolutely delusional

Myrtle Beach and Savannah are true archetypal subtropical climates.

I've actually seen and feel snow here in MB................................................................but it melted once it was 9am and there's many palms here including two native species as well as crops growing such as peas, kale, collard greens, and cabbage, which probably indicates a sign that it is in fact subtropical..............averages for January are 55/36, for December it's 58/38, and February 58/40

10c mean in the coolest month is not subtropical. Subtropical must feel warm year round with a hot summer as opposed to tropical which must be hot year round. In addition to this vegetation must appear at least to be partly tropical.
I would say minimum winter mean temp for subtropical is 15c. The NE US is far away from being subtropical lmao
