Bit slow Weatherzone.... !'ve been banging on about the record May heat for near on 3 weeks... "Darwin's hottest May In Over A Century" ( source: Weatherzone ) Australia's northernmost capital city Darwin has just sweated through its hottest May in reliable records for maximum temperatures, as well as one of its most humid despite no rain falling. Darwin's maximum temperatures averaged 33.7°C this May, +1.6°C warmer than the long-term average for the site. This makes it the warmest May in 117 years of reliable records*, just warmer than previous title-holder in 2022 (averaging 33.6°C). ^^Image: Maximum temperature deciles for May, showing they were the highest on record for Darwin and surrounding areas, with much of the Top End and eastern NT above average. Temperatures ranged from a high of 35.1°C on Friday 10th and a low of 30.5°C on Tuesday 21st. Oddly enough, both of these days featured gusty east-southeasterly winds coming off the Australian continent. The difference between these two days was cloud-cover, with warm conditions in clear skies, and cooler conditions if its cloudy. Minimum temperatures averaged 23.7°C, +1.5°C above average. While this seems warm (even hot by southerner's standards) this was only the 10th warmest May on record. Only one night fell below 20°C (19.1°C on Tuesday 21st), the common threshold beyond which locals add an extra blanket to the bed. Darwin did not record a drop of rain during May, although that is fairly common. 24 out of the 78 Mays the current Darwin Airport site has been recording for have been completely dry, with a further eight recording 1mm or less. Despite the dry, Darwin and much of the Northern Territory were more humid than normal during May. The map below shows specific humidity (akin to dew point temperature) anomalies during May. The large region in blue and purple reflect humidity being higher than normal. Darwin and the NT is far from alone with this increased humidity, with locations near the equator from Africa to the central Pacific Ocean showing a similar pattern. This reflects how much warmer ocean and air temperatures were during May, and for the last 12 months, especially for the world's tropics. Climate outlooks are suggesting Darwin will continue with a run of warmer than average temperatures each month during the dry season. However, if La Niña starts to develop, increasing cloud would be expected over the Top End later in the year, reducing temperatures closer to average. *Note: Prior to 1907, records at Darwin's Post Office site are not considered always reliable as this was before weather measurment standards were enforced at the site.

28.1c was as warm as it got today in Darwin at 4.25pm. As I write this my toes are feeling it on the varandah. This is cooler than last June's lowest max of 31.1c and it is the coolest day since 25th July last year when it only got ti 26c (only 2 days last July were cooler than today). So yeah, it much cooler than average but it is no daily record (27.4c in 1985) or close to the June record (22.7c in 20th June 2007). But hey, much better than the record heat of last month. Its going ti be cool in the morning ! 16c forecast

Teeth-chattering temps in the NT ( source: Weatherzone ) In what appears to be a fear-of-missing-out (FOMO) weather scenario, our Northern Territory has been the latest victim of cold temperatures this weekend after seeing its southern neighbours be a little too free with the chill. This comes, as if on cue, with the beginning of winter, after above-average maximum temperatures were seen in the month of May. Whilst 30+ degree maximums mostly dominate the north, even at this time of year, Saturday saw the easing of the usually gusty southeasterly winds, keeping maximums in the high 20s for much of the Top End. Early on both Saturday and Sunday morning, temperatures dropped to the mid-teens and below across the Top End as light winds blew cold, dry air across the region. Take a look at all those blues in the figure below. ^^Images: (Top): Forecast 12-hour minimum temperature to 4pm on Sunday, 9th June using the ACCESS-G3 Sat 18Z model, and (Bottom): Observed temperatures at 6:35am ACST on Sunday, 9th June, including wind speed and direction with Himawari satellite imagery. Between Friday night to Saturday afternoon: Darwin Airport dropped to 15.5ºC, the lowest June minimum since 2019 and the lowest temperature for any month since July 2023. Croker Island Airport dropped to 16.1ºC, the lowest June minimum since at least 2013 and the lowest temperature for any month since July 2023. Gove Airport maxed out at 26.8ºC, the lowest maximum temperature for any month since August 2022. On Sunday: Delamere dropped to 9.3ºC, the lowest June minimum since 2011 and the lowest temperature for any month since May 2020. Pirlangimpi dropped to 12.5ºC, the lowest June minimum since 2011 and the lowest temperature for any month since July 2022. Temperatures are forecast to reach 25ºC at Elliott, about 3ºC lower than the June maximum average, and 29ºC at Darwin, about 2ºC lower than the June maximum average. Despite the cold temperatures, we should be reminded that we are well and truly in the Top End's bushfire season, being in the dry season now. Bushfires which are now under control were burning across Central Arnhem on Saturday. ^^Image: Himawari satellite imagery of the NT's Top End on Saturday afternoon, showing the extent of the bushfires, as well as temperatures, dewpoints and wind speed & direction.

Some drier air pushing in overnight after a 33c max today... so a 17c min in the forecast... doesn't feel like it at the moment.
