Decent cold spell we are having.... not record breaking per se ...AND as usual us weather aficionados sometimes have short memories... lol. Only 2 years ago we had the second coldest July on record at the Airport - 17.0c/28.9c monthly means... and every day of July was sub 20c for mins and 17 days were sub 30c max temps !
Gunn point dropped to 8.3c this morning, Point Fawcett 9.7c and a new all time record of 1.0c at Daly Waters Borroloola dipped to 3.1c.
July 1965 was the real cold one.... 15.9c/29.1c monthly mean at the Airport.
And an honourable mention to July 1968. mid month a bit of a north west cloudband produced some cold ( for Darwin ) max temps and some dry season rain Darwin Airport min, max and rainfall July 1968 11th - 21.1c/30.3c 0.0mm 12th - 22.8c/31.7c 0.0mm 13th - 16.3c/21.8c 0.0mm 14th - 16.4c/21.1c 0.0mm 15th - 17.3c/27.9c 8.1mm 16th - 19.0c/31.0c 0.0mm 17th - 20.7c/31.7c 0.3mm
Did you know that between 1965 and 1973 the BOM operated a Darwin Regional Office ( site number 14161 ). Does anyone know its exact location ? !968 July cold spell 11th - 21.8c/28.9c 0.0mm 12th - 22.2c/29.9c 0.0mm 13th - 16.2c/21.3c 0.0mm 14th - 15.8c/20.6c 0.8mm 15th - 17.2c/27.1c 2.8mm 16th - 18.7c/29.0c 0.5mm 17th - 20.8c/30.2c 0.3mm

Darwin's 'wettest' July in 23 years ( source: Weatherzone ) Darwin just registered its wettest July in 23 years, although it’s unlikely a single umbrella was raised throughout the month. July marks the middle of the NT’s dry season, which runs from May to September and typically includes periods of weeks to months without any rainfall in Darwin. This long spell of low rainfall occurs because the monsoon moves to the north of Australia through the middle of the year, causing drier southeasterly winds to dominate over the NT’s Top End. Darwin’s long-term average rainfall in the entire dry season is 43.7 mm and July is usually the city’s driest month, with a long-term monthly average of just 1.1 mm. By comparison, Sydney’s July average is close to 100 mm. This July was a very wet month by local standards. Despite only collecting 2.4 mm in the entire month, Darwin doubled its monthly average rainfall and registered its wettest July in 23 years. The sight of this much rain is rare in Darwin during July and some might consider it lucky to be soaked by a couple of millimetres at this time of year. Unfortunately, most of last month’s rain (2.2 mm) fell on a single Thursday night, while most people were in bed. Despite most locals sleeping through the rare dry season rain last month, it was still enough to make this Darwin’s wettest July since 2001. It was also the first time in 23 years Darwin registered more than one day of rain during July. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this was far from Darwin’s wettest July on record. The city’s old Post Office weather station once recorded 65 mm of rain in a single July, way back in 1900. Looking ahead, Darwin has no rain on the forecast for the opening week of August and that will most likely be the story for most of the month. On average, Darwin usually records rain on one day every second August.

A classic late dry season day in and around Darwin... DP's around 10c, gusty south easterlies, bushfire smoke throughout the city and suburbs and +35c max temps. Our hottest max temp since the 10th of May when the max was also 35.1c. Prior to that 35.2c on the 26th April. And our 10th +35c day for the year. The earliest +35.1c August day at Darwin Airport since records began in 1941

The August heat ramping up across the Top End. The Airport's second +35c max of the month and the 11th such day of 2024. +35 max at the Airport in August is historically uncommon with only 10 such days prior to the year 2000. Since then, 18 such days and 14 of those since 2020. 2024 - 2 ( so far ) 2023 - 2 2021 - 5 2020 - 5 2017 - 2 2012 - 1 2000 - 1 So now with the 35.2c today, that's 18 +35c August days since 2000... and possibly another 4 or 5 before the end of the month if the forecast temps happen..
