April done and dusted. And the last wet season month of 2023-2024. Deffo a tale of extremes re rainfall in the Territory, with some exceptional rainfall totals in the far north eastern Top End - the stand out total was 757.0mm at Cape Wessel which included a daily fall of 298.4mm on the 22nd. But otherwise, rainfall totals dropped off substantially across the rest of the NT, and well below average in the Darwin region. April is a transitional month between wet and dry seasons and can swing either way; this year we had a distinct lack of 'knock 'em down' storms and some early infusions of dry south easterlies which suppressed the rain and humidity. After a wet March in Central Australia, April was dry as a witch's tit with no rain falling in the Alice Springs gauge. April was well below average re min and max temps in Central Australia ( winter is coming ). The Alice only recorded one day +30c for the month ( 1st ) and quite a few single digit mins. April was a hot month in Darwin, with min and max temps above the long term means. Rainfall - 18.4mm falling on 5 days ( long term mean 101.5mm) Highest daily fall - 15.0mm on the 1st Max temps - 33.6c av ( long term mean 32.8c ) Highest max - 35.2c on the 26th. Lowest max - 31.7c on the 12th Min temps - 24.7c av ( long term mean 24.1c ) Highest min - 26.9c on the 17th. Lowest min - 22.1c on the 11th. Rainfall - 0.0mm falling on 0 days ( long term mean 16.4mm) Highest daily fall - 0 Max temps - 25.9c av ( long term mean 28.4c) Highest max 31.9c on the 1st. Lowest max 21.9c on the 26th Min temps - 8.9c av ( long term mean 12.6c ) Highest min 19.3c on the 1st. Lowest min 2.9c on the 27th.

April 2024 Summary in south South Yorkshire, data from nearest city of Sheffield.April was a boring rainy and record cloudy month with a mild cloudy wet first half and a cold cloudy wet second half. The max temp was 2°C below normal. The rainfall was 50% higher than normal and sun about 60% of normal. No weather occurred this month except light rain and clouds. The temperature was average but with a higher than average low temperature and a lower than average high temperature due to clouds. There wasn't a single frost which is highly unusual and the first time in my records.

Perth Metro 2024 April Summary High Max: 36.5C (7th) Mean Max: 28.2C (+2.3C) Low Max: 20.0C (30th) Anomaly: +1.45C High Min: 18.3C (17th) Mean Min: 14.4C (+0.6C) Low Min: 9.9C (21st) Rain: 1.2mm (3.24% of average 37.1mm) Rain Days: 1 Sun: 279.4hrs (+36hrs) Hrs/day: 9.3/day (+1.2/day) April started off hot, dry, and was looking to be contending for the hottest April on record. It felt like a continuation of the already above average march and at times throughout the first 3 weeks, even February-like. By the 21st the mtd max was 30.1C but the final 10 days resembled more seasonable, yet dry weather. The 30th received the coolest, first wintery temps of Autumn but the 8.4mm of rain registered on that day have been recorded into May as it was after 9am...I don't make the rules . Overall, very hot, dry, sunny; a continuation of the trends held firmly since August-September last year. Below is Walpole North, a station near the south coast. This is how dry even the drizzliest, coolest bits of the coast have been!

Such a nice, pleasant month here, as April always is. 2.2ºF above the 1991-2020 average temp with 151% of normal rainfall, which was nicely concentrated in the first half of the month, a bonus as I like the end of April to be distinctly drier than the rest of the month.

Ulladulla 2024 April Summary:April was an average month: slightly cooler ( -0.15ºC), wetter ( 123%) and cloudier ( -9.5 hrs) than normal, affirmed by the ENSO's neutral phase. The beginning of the month saw the warmest day/night of the moth, followed by drizzle and a huge storm on the 6th, unloading 2/3 of the month's rain. After the coolest day of the month, a relatively mild, calm and sunny period happened, briefly interrupted by some drizzle. It was quite a bit cooler, wetter and cloudier than average. After a warm day on the 1st, a cold front swept through bringing significant rain and cooler temperatures. In fact, the 71.2mm of rain overnight on the 1st-2nd was our wettest day since June 2013. We had another fairly big rain event on the 8th-9th as a follow up. Even though the month dried up somewhat after the first third, cooler than normal temperatures still prevailed. Interesting to note that 4 of the last 5 Aprils have had more than 100mm of rain, and they were all cloudier than normal.

April was really nice and mostly above average except for a handful of cold and snowy days in the middle of the month. We also got a decent amount of rain, and are now off to the wettest start to a year that we've had in a while. Due to Environment Canada continuing to shit the bed with missing data and undercounted precipitation, I decided to switch over to using data from our other weather station instead. Average high: 13.7C (normal: 10.4C) Average low: 0.9C (normal: -6.0C) Mean temperature: 7.3C (normal: 4.4C) Warmest high: 23.2C (Apr 24th) Warmest low: 7.0C (Apr 29th) Coldest high: -2.2C (Apr 18th) Coldest low: -6.0C (Apr 20th) Precipitation: 25.6mm (normal: 23.3mm) Sunshine: 248.6 hours (normal: 231.4 hours)

April was very bad, and only the last days prevented it from being catastrophic. 4 days before the end of the month it seemed that the average high would be the lowest since 1997, or even 1992. What was the least since 1992 was sunshine, the month was extraordinarily cloudy. The 5th saw an ice day, which was the first April ice day since 2003. The period between 18 and 23 April was especially dire, when the mean temp was -0.4C, a whopping 6.5C below the 2003-2023 average for that 6-day period.
As of 1 May there was no leafout whatsoever, not even on bushes and other undergrowth. A thoroughly depressing month.
Highest high: 18.2C (29th) Highest low: 5.8C (29th) Lowest high: -0.6C (5th) Lowest low -5.9C (4th)
Deviations from 91-20:
Average high: -2.0C Mean temp: -0.9C Average low: +0.2C Precipitation: +13 mm (140%) Sunshine: -86 hours (58%)
So far the year has amassed 309 hours of bright sunshine, when the average should be 453 hours, so we sit at 68% of average.
And don't get me started on Riga. Their average highs in April are 2.5C higher than in Turku, which is fair enough, as their Aprils start warmer than ours. This year they were 5.1C higher. And we are just 400 km away from each other.

April was a pretty good, interesting month. It had normal temperatures with over 2x the average rainfall (1.38"). The first half of the month had some temperature swings including consecutive daily highs dropping 11c at the airport (not Cal Poly's station because it records at 2pm), a mid-afternoon low, and foehn winds causing temperatures to rise to over 20c in the middle of the night. The prolonged windstorm during the last week was also interesting. Airport data from Wunderground. I think this graph captures the story best, though it's drier and windier than most of the town.
