Snow possible in Queensland ! ( source: Weatherzone ) Light snow flurries are absolutely possible on Tuesday July 16, Wednesday July 17, and Thursday July 18 on the Granite Belt region of southern Queensland, as a cold airmass originating in Antarctic waters crosses the border. The chilly air will be accompanied by sufficient moisture for occasional light showers which could fall as snow on high ground above about 1000 metres. Snow is of course not unknown in Queensland The Granite Belt town of Stanthorpe, at an elevation of just over 800 metres, holds the record for Queensland's coldest recorded temperature of a bitterly cold –10.6°C back in June 1961, and also sees occasional snowfalls. The heaviest snowfalls in Stanthorpe this century occurred on July 17, 2015, when at least 5 cm of fluffy white stuff coated the region. Even the nearby town of Ballandean at an elevation of 720 m saw settled snow that day. Here's what the BoM’s synoptic chart looked like on July 17, 2015. And here's the Weatherzone synoptic chart for July 17 2024, as in this Wednesday. The two charts are not identical but they're not too different either. The main feature they have in common is a flow of air from polar latitudes circulating anti-clockwise around a high in the Bight and being directed northwards toward southern Queensland, with moisture provided by troughs associated with a low in the Tasman Sea. These systems are always a bit hit and miss, so we'll have to wait and see if this week's set-up delivers a few flakes for Queensland. It'll be a cold night by Brisbane standards with a low of nine degrees with maximums of 19°C expected from Monday through to Thursday.

Damn, had an instantaneous max dewpoint of 84.3°F at my PWS just after 1 PM today, with an actual air temp of 91°F during a localized sound breeze event. Pulled some weeds in those conditions (sustained 82-83°F dews), broke an instant sweat in it. Forecast high of 99°F was nowhere to be seen today, though did get hit by an isolated T-storm thereafter, had 0.18" of rain today, though most notably I experienced a downswing of dews to 71°F from the outflow, felt dry and cool with a breeze. Another hot day tomorrow forecast with mid-90s temps and upper 70s dewpoints, then a wet pattern is progged to return late this week due to a stalled cold front:

Half way through July, and the stats are horrific.
Avg max: 20.9c (-3.0c) Avg min: 12.6c (-1.6c) Rainfall: 79.8mm (177%) Sunshine: 56.7 hours (26%)
July 2007 and 2012 were both better months. To find an equally cold July, you have to go back to 1988.
Hopefully the 2nd half of the month will be an improvement, leading into a hot, dry and sunny August/September.

It’s a winter wonderland across southern SEQ this morning! ( source: Weather Enthusiast Dylan Mckenna ) It dropped to a bone chilling -5c 😳 here along the river flats at Palen Creek, just south of Rathdowney SEQ this morning with light to heavy frost ❄️ present across the area. This area is considered a “frost hollow” as cold air pools here overnight with temperatures down along the flats usually falling 3-7c colder than other surrounding areas. This could well be the coldest location in SEQ this morning! I also did a little “experiment” and put a full glass of water on a fence post down in the paddock last night to see how frozen it would be by morning and to my surprise it had frozen completely solid! By far the coldest morning of the year down here and I’m happy I was here to witness it. Make sure to follow WEDM for more imagery like this! 😁❄️ 📸-Palen creek, Southern Border Ranges SEQ.

Misleading media stupidity at its finest. This is why there is no hope for us. People will believe this shit as fact. The stupid fuck(s) that wrote that headline and article need to be castrated and banished.

NWS records "trace of snow" all the time in non-freezing weather that's actually hail or graupel and polar foamers completely eat the shit up and spread it like wildfire to promote their agenda. Similar thing happened here in April, recorded "trace of snow" on a nice 80ºF/60ºF ish day.

Tropical Queensland Records Coldest Morning in Years as Temperatures Plummet up to 14C Below Average And Records Fall! ( source: Anthony Cornelius Meteorologist ) North Queenslanders can officially complain about the cold this morning. Palmerville was one of the standouts (located west of Cooktown in the far north), the town fell to just 0.5C this morning - that's their coldest July morning on record and a staggering 14C below average. Meanwhile Georgetown had their coldest morning on record falling to -0.5C! A few other notable chilly highlights: ❄️ Hughenden: -0.9C, 11C below average and the coldest morning in 12 years ❄️ Georgetown AP: -0.5C, 14C below average, their coldest morning on record (noting the post office has had colder mornings and is an older station though) ❄️ Mt Isa: -0.5C, 9C below average, marking the coldest morning in 6 years. ❄️ Palmerville: 0.5C, 14C below average, and the coldest July morning on record ❄️ Townsville AP: 7.0C, 7C below average, the coldest morning in 4 years ❄️ Cooktown: 9.6C, 7C below average ❄️ Cairns AP: 11.4C, 6C below average How cold did it get at your place? Did you see any frost? Feel free to share your temps and any frost pictures - but remember there's still more cold mornings to come!

17/07 My nearest station got high 29.0c, low 19.5c, no precipitation. 0.5c short of being tropical night. Some coastal stations recorded it although there was nothing that could be called heat during the day. Sea water in the afternoon

Wettest Perth day in over a year ( source: Weatherzone ) Perth has enjoyed its wettest 24-hour period in over a year, after 43.8 mm fell in the 24 hours to 9 am Thursday. Weatherzone meteorologist Asleigh Madden wrote on Wednesday afternoon that a cold, wet change was heading the way of southwest SA, and the cold front duly arrived on Wednesday evening. As you can see in the loop below, the heaviest showers moved through between 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm local time along with a narrow line of storms. A 12-hour period of frequent showers then followed the two-hour burst of heavy rain. The 43.8 mm to 9 am narrowly exceeded the 43.2 mm that fell in Perth on June 2. This made it the heaviest rain day in the WA capital since June 5, 2023, when 71.2 mm was recorded. It also brought Perths running monthly total to 90.2 mm. While there's still a way to go to reach the July average of 146.3 mm, Perth should get close to that mark in the next week or so, with showers forecast this weekend and heavier rain due in the new week as another cold front approaches. As the bar graph of Perth rainfall below shows, Perth has not exceeded its average monthly rainfall in any of the past 12 months. Perth's last above-average rainfall month was June 2023, which included the day mentioned above when 71.2 mm fell. Meanwhile good falls were reported right across the southwest, including numerous inland locations with readings up to 25 mm, while Jurien Bay, just over two hours north of Perth, had the state's highest reading with 55 mm.

The high and low that day: 86/69 Look on NOWData if you don't believe me. The way they record it is misleading at best; should be labeled "solid precipitation" if they're going to count like that.
