Maintenance day for my weather stations. Removed my Allapattah Flats North station as we start getting into prescribed burn season and installing it at Lake Placid Scrub to hopefully serve as an analogue and benchmark for the nearby and error-prone Archbold Biological Station. Also did a firmware update at my main Allapattah Flats station since it was still running my older program which consumes nearly four times the amount of cellular data. Very dry and breezy day for the time of year. Dew point at home never got above a pathetic 69 F all day. The Archbold area is in severe drought at the moment, about half of citrus groves have been completely defoliated by the stressful conditions. View from a high scrub/sandhill area down to the seepage slope at Lake Placid Scrub near where the station was installed. These isolated scrub basins are likely some of the most cold-prone locations in the area. Station area Installed on dead pine tree Burned scrub with Lake Placid itself visible in distance

Was stranded in a train in the middle of nowhere between Lyon and Paris. I saw the sunset and thought the foreground with the farm and forest was nice so took a pic. We switched trains in some obscure service station. It was chilly as you can see from the people (morning temps where barely above the freezing point in that location). A bit after 10 pm, a tad darker than Paris same hour:

These past few days have been cool for the season, though you notice that it's summer as soon as the sun's out.

Went to Tettegouche state park on Lake Superior today. So much prettier than inland Minnesota, amazing what even small hills does to improve the scenery. Baptism river emptying into Lake Superior: > < Lake Superior shoreline had cool cliffs, rocky inlets and grottos. These are called the Palisade Head: > < Shoreline and the hills behind: Closeup of the hills: > < Shovel Point, looking north down the shoreline. Hills provide a backdrop for pretty much the whole Minnesota superior shore: > < Much nicer forest here than the Brainerd area. Pretty much all confers and aspens, no shitty oaks and maples. Also very short undergrowth like out west, no dense choking mass: > < Decent conifer diversity too, not pictured are Northern white cedar, white pine, red pine, and tamarack. Went inland for the next hike, first to high falls. Took the wrong trail so view wasnโt great. Got a good look at the Baptism river above the falls though: > < Two Step falls, well the upper step of it: > <

those flowers are Rhexia alifanus and Polygala lutea, respectively, the latter of which is also native here (in case you didn't already know)

I recently spent a weekend in Porto. In terms of weather, it had the same sort of variability that I'm used to at home. The most noticeable difference was with the lows. It doesn't get as cool at night. The variety of plants that can survive here is clearly much larger. The first day began sunny, early 20C's, the clouds came over in the evening and we had some light rain. It's a beautiful city. On the 2nd day we took a trip to the beach and also went on a party boat down the river. This was the cloudiest day, and we had some heavy rain in the evening. The breeze coming off the Atlantic when we got out to sea was as strong as you'd expect. Although the temperature was perfectly pleasant, I was in shorts and t-shirt the whole time. The pavements there definitely aren't made to accommodate rain like ours are at home. As I slipped many times, although the copious amounts of Port and Super Bock I'd consumed may also have been a factor The 3rd day was the best, weather-wise. 25c, clear blue skies. We took a wine tour around the city and watched some of Euro 2024. Before enjoying some more of my beloved Super Bock by the river. Don't be sad that it's over, be glad that it happened.
