"spring is determined by daylength, not temperature" " Swedish meteorologists define the beginning of spring as the first occasion on which the average daytime temperature exceeds zero degrees Celsius for seven consecutive days, thus the date varies with latitude and elevation." .

"spring is determined by daylength, not temperature" " Swedish meteorologists define the beginning of spring as the first occasion on which the average daytime temperature exceeds zero degrees Celsius for seven consecutive days, thus the date varies with latitude and elevation." . That seems like a misleading definition though, as any random winter mild spell could jump start "spring". Also, I think spring could be defined by both. Say your coldest mean in the year is -20 C in January, and warmest is 10 C in July, the seasons could be defined as when means are the following. Winter (coldest 25%): -12.5 C to -20 C to -12.5 C (usually a time period between late November and about mid-March) Spring (transition season): -12.5 C to 2.5 C (usually a time period between mid-March and late May) Summer (warmest 25%): 2.5 C to 10.0 C to 2.5 C (usually between late May and mid-September or so) Autumn (transition season): 2.5 C to -12.5 C (usually between mid-September and late November) So essentially, winter is the coldest 25% of means, and summer the warmest 25%, while spring and autumn are transitional seasons. This usually puts summer and winter as the longest seasons which makes sense, considering weather changes the most in a week-to-week, month-by-month basis in spring and autumn than summer and winter.

Spring cannot arrive before the 15th of February for example (supposedly the after coldest day of the year on average)

Here we just go with the simply three month spilts.
Dec-Feb = Winter Mar-May = Spring Jun-Aug = Summer Sep-Nov = Autumn

Spring cannot arrive before the 15th of February for example (supposedly the after coldest day of the year on average) That makes more sense, but still I would assume late February up there is not exactly spring-like yet? In my opinion, just because some random mild spell happens in late February where you might get a week of highs in the 1-4 C range, doesn't mean it's "spring". The pattern could easily flip and be in the deep freeze in March. Of course my view is a bit skewed living in North America, where the climate is very variable so trying to pinpoint a start of spring seems pointless. Some years the pattern is winter-like still even into late March/early April or the pattern starts getting spring-like in late February.

bike ride on Saturday. City doesn't bother plow residential side streets; leaving them a crummy mix of packed snow and slush. with non-knobby tires hard to go at a decent speed, at least the stretch was short. 6-8°C, first mild day with sun in a while downhill, thankfully snow-free nearly all the rural roads were cleared at least chickens crossing the road; car slowed for the chickens partly ice-covered stream porcupine froze on the tree when he saw me downhill back into town, close to sunset. Getting later at 4:50 pm.

I don't think this one is supposed to be kept outside during winter. This one isn't either. Its buddy is doing alright though, ditto the ivy. This was a few days ago in Tavelsjö. My thermometer was showing -25'C down by the lake and -20'C up on the ridge between the two lakes where we live. It was cold enough for us to get a bunch of frost on the fine hairs on our face. Look at my GF's nose for example (and the front of her eskimo hat and scarf). Today is the first thawing days in what feels like ages. Airport and university showing 0.0'C, my thermometer 0.9'C in the center. Feels hot. Melting a lot more than it should at 0.0'C. Either way, look at this tree. Normally when there's one snowy side and one bare side like this the bare side is to the south. This time the snowy side is to the south. Oh, and I forgot to say, it's snowed close to 15 cm today.

Yuck. Too much snow. That's not how winter is supposed to look like! More signs of spring an alien invasion. Aren't they a cute couple?

I can see the sun! This has been a very cloudy winter, yet it hasn't been very warm. A little above average but really lacking in above freezing temperatures. Every year they build a tiny snow palace in the middle of the city. They seemed cooler when I was younger. Here's the busiest junction in the city at half past 3. Traffic is pretty decent in Umeå.

Nice pics Babu! I'm on a bit of a hiatus now since our winter landscapes suddenly look about as interesting as Wrexham, Skipton and Buxton

This is all that's left of snow after several days of thaw. Fortunately it will cool down again over the next few days.

Nice images by my fellow posters here. Here are a two from Trondheim today Jan 27th by me. Both are straight from my iphone camera, no fixing.

Both are straight from my iphone camera, no fixing. looks similar to winter landscapes; a lot of brown with some not quite melted snow and ice. And plenty of sunshine The iPhone is a decent phone camera, at least for most scenes, but it does have a distinctive style in how treats blue skies by upping the contrast and deepening the blues [might be common to phone cameras, dunno]. Snowy mountains in the distant background of the second photo give a clue it's somewhere else

I have noticed our blue skies here in Mid-Norway compared to many other places in Europe I have visited. That is, when it isn't cloudy here. Clean air helps. Most of my images in these photo threads are not taken with iphone cam. Like those posted in page 7 here in this thread, from the darkest time of the year up in the city forest. This is March 2017 in the hills SE of the city, a digital camera and not iphone This was May 2017 on the northern shore of Trondheimsfjord, using a DSLR

Really warm day today: temperatures up to 13°C, really warm sun and nearly no wind. Even I could stay outdoor with just an open light jacket, and I'm a really cold-sensitive person. The sky has an amazing blue color today! My cat is enjoying the weather too: ^ January has been warmer than average and really rainy, but the grass still looks mostly brown. It is like this since when the snow cover which lasted all over December melted.

nice cat, same cat that was in your snow photos? Yes. I also have a red cat, but he is more sleepy and, generally speaking, he doesn't like to play with us as the grey cat does.
