So, meteorological winter will most definitely have come four days ago to Tavelsjö, and if Umeå doesn't get its winter then, they will most likely get it next week. Either way, there have been, and will be enough winter pics, at least from me to warrant the start of the new seasonal photo thread. You remember how I said the lake wasn't frozen two days ago? Well, yesterday there was like 3cm of new ice close to the shores, and ice covering like 70% of the lake. All that had frozen in one clear and eerily calm day (the airport in Umeå averaged 0.0 m/s with gusts of 1m/s). It resulted in quite amazingly glass clear ice. This is 15 m out on the edge of where there had been ice among the reeds and where all the ice was new. The depth is about 1-1.5 m. This morning I decided to venture out on the ice in the sunlight. Really incredibly. I might try ice skating, although when you ventured a few meters out of the reeds the ice would crack quite a bit. I had myself a few scares. Problem is it's going to rain and/or snow tomorrow. Either way, here are some glass clear ice pictures. The dog is very confused at being able to walk on water. This was pretty cool. Frost. View. View. The eastern side of the lake still hasn't frozen though. 2015 the lake didn't freeze until mid-December.

Well Babu, so long as you stay where you can easily recover if something goes wrong then that's okay Besides, do you think there's a strong chance the lake might go through a non-frozen phase again before permanent winter freezing? Shallow waters are rather remarkable though, it had been 1-2°C with some interlopes of 5°C for ages in February at Örstig's sea inlet near here and still it was frozen right on the coastline

Is the light really so orange there or is there a tinge to the photos? Colors seem weird somehow.

It's as if it's magically impossible to thaw ice. It can be -1'C for a day and then the whole ice is frozen but the 10'C day after that does nothing to remelt it. Or so it seems at least. The smaller lake in the frost hollow valley has been freezing and melting and refreezing constantly for the last month though.

How cold has it gotten in the past couple of days up there? About -10 C? Yesterday got to about -13'C, and the hourly average since the 14th seems to have been about -5'C. www.vackertvader.se/väderstation/brattbyThis is probably the most similar station to Tavelsjö. (There is a closer one but that one seems a little too warm compared to nearby stations).

It snowed, then it rained, and then it snowed again last night. The lake looked quite odd this morrow. No, those aren't holes in the ice. They are just spots with only water and no slush. Turns out the lake is covered by a centimeter thick layer of water and slush. If I felt like I was walking on water yesterday... Well today I actually did. When you're 15m out from the shore and this happen, it's not the nicest thing. I mean the sound... It doesn't just crack underneath you; the cracking sound reverbs around the entire lake. Scary stuff. At least it warns you not to go further out than you should. This though, I'm pretty sure that's actually just water. I couldn't get closer to see if there was ice underneath (I took the previous picture at the same spot...), but I think there is actually a small river running therough the ice, or an estuary or whatever you'd like to call it. It seems though that Umeå will escape having the winter arrive four days ago seeing as we reached a bit over 4'C and it's only -1'C at the airport right now. It actually looks like Tavelsjö will manage the same, at least if you take the hourly average today seeing the high today was very plateaued. We'll see how Umeå manages the forthcoming week...

Keep posting the pictures Baba, they're pretty amazing for someone who rarely gets to see scenes like that. The last time I walked on a frozen lake, the ice cracked and I had to swim out

The last time I walked on a frozen lake, the ice cracked and I had to swim out I've kind of swum in icy waters before, and know it isn't that bad... Although I was a bit drunk... And I did do it in combination with a sauna...

Webcam picture from Skistua in Trondheim's city forest ( Bymarka) right now at 10:00 AM. This is just 12-14 min drive for me. So even if there is no snow down in the city, there is a good amount up there at 430 m asl. embed.metnet.no/?dash=wvNtBWvFXm

Classy pics as usual You should try and sell some pics to the local newspaper or something! You could get a career as a natural photographer in your spare time!

These are really dull pictures and are only meant as an update. There has fallen quite a bit of snow which will last at least until Friday in Umeå (6'C then and 25mm rain in Umeå) and who knows, this might very well last until April in Tavelsjö. According to SMHI's snow cover map the thickness is 15 cm throughout the entire county even at the coast, but it's not even a decimeter in Tavelsjö at least, and doubtfully more in the city. Also, now that there's snow, it's much easier to gauge the ice extent on the lake. Turns out it's only the north-mid-to-western corner, not even a fourth of the lake, that's frozen. You don't really see it from lake height though. It's easier from up on the church hill. See, definitely not 15 cm at least on the lake, although some places on solid ground might have up to 10 cm. Went the industrial outskirts of the city for a job interview. It started snowing quite heavily... I'm not sure this is the optimal appearance for a job interview. Full res images

Nov 21. is the last day of the year that you can see the sun in Tromsø, a short glimpse around noon if the sky is clear. This is Tromsø on Nov 22 - today - around noon. I took this picture with my iphone. This is as light as it gets up there now. And of course, this image is straight from the camera. According to yr, the snow depth is 8 cm in Tromsø. Seems less downtown. Recording of snow depth is at 100 m asl where the met. office is. Temperature ca -3C. Tromsø recorded 1478 sunhours in 2017. Not a single minute sun in Jan and Dec, and only 5 hours in Nov. But 200 hrs or more in 4 months: Apr, Jun (307), Jul and Sep.
