My friend recently bought a cabin in arctic Sweden north of Gรคllivare, and so my friends and I went there for a few days during the aftermath of storm Lilian on the 25th. To our surprise, foliage was peaking over there. Back home in Umeรฅ on the 29th, there's no sign of fall to be seen whatsoever (although as soon as you drive like 10 min outside the city you can start to spot some foliage).

My son travelled out to a roadworks job on the Plenty Highway east of Alice Springs a few days ago. The company he works for have a contract out near the QLD border. Map and sunsrise pics this morning... son complaining of the cold ( 12c ) as a born and bred Darwin fella would... lol.

Mount Sneffels from this weekend: Trailhead: 10,800' Summit: 14,155' Distance: 7.4 miles roundtrip Spent Friday night in Ouray, nice mountain town very scenic setting in a box canyon: > < Trail starts in Yankee Boy Basin and winds up a 4WD road for 2.5 miles. Starts at near treelike so there's views the whole hike. Still pretty lush for late August. Nice tarn: > < Eventually, the trail leaves the Jeep road and enters a talus field with nice views of the nearby cliffs and peaks. Cool rock formations: > < Views become more dramatic as you climb. However, the talus soon turned to a miserable scree gully. Slip and slide loose dirt and gravel, with not much better loose rocks as the alternative to the side. Going up was ass, going down was torturous. Felt more unsafe descending that than any exposed rock scrambling I've done. Finally, the gully ends at a saddle. The next gully is significantly better, with large solid rocks, this one was fun to ascend. Looking down from the top: > < After this, it was a short scramble with very solid rock to the summit. This section was fun but unfortunately short. Somehow I got no pictures of the infamous V-notch, you can look it up online. Man, the views--the San Juans are hard to beat for scenery. Looking out to the north is very different, with mellow mesas. Can see all the way to the desert around Grand Junction. > < Blue lakes way down below. Love the multi-colored rock too. Summit was crowded and small so didn't stick around much. On the descent, looking down toward Yankee Boy Basin > <

Climbed Mount Sherman yesterday Distance: 5.3 miles Summit: 14,043' Trailhead: 12,000' Rented a 4runner for the 4wd road. Annoyingly I rented it through Turo and it said no off roading way in the fine print which I missed, got charged an extra $150. Annoying that this wasn't in the vehicle information or some prominent place, most people who rent 4wd vehicles except to, you know, use them as 4wd vehicles. Not Not the most pleasant hike, but very short and easy. First half is walking up an abandoned 4wd road. I'm definitely jaded, coming from the east, these views are great, but in comparison to other peaks, I was underwhelmed. Lots of barren tundra and rounded mountains: > < San Juans, Elks, and even the Sawatch are much more scenic. The other ranges definitely lag behind. Although again, it's the Colorado mountains, there's no bad scenery, just less impressive. Trail passes the abandoned mine, lasted until the 1980s actually. Kinda cool. > < Leave the road about halfway in and then climb up to the ridge. Views open to the west to Leadville and the Arkansas valley. The peaks in the background are the Sawatch Range--many 14ers there too. Nice green basin too. > < The ridge is narrow but easy talus walking, this is a hike, not a scramble, despite big drop offs a few feet to either side. > < Looking back down on the route up, huge expanse of tundra. I do love how expansive the wilderness is here. Summit is basically a long, flat, ridge. More peaks to the north come into view, some still have snow patches. > < Looking back up at the peak: > <

Wyoming/Montana/Idaho/Utah. Mostly revisiting places I've already been to 5 years ago, but visited some new ones as well. Fossil Butte National Monument, Wyoming. Felt oppressively hot and dry here coming directly from FL despite the modest temps.

Nice skies lately with the cold air aloft. Got a nice storm yesterday with a few close strike. Today only small non-thundery downpours.

Climbed La Plata Peak Saturday, new highest elevation for me (14,344'/4372 m) Distance: 9.3 miles Trailhead: 10,000' Summit: 14,344' Time: 7 hours Started as a pleasant, flattish hike through subalpine forest. Weather has nice, cool but sunny with no wind. Got some nice views to aspens on the nearby mountainsides > < After two miles, the trail switchbacked steeply a slope then became talus for the rest of the view. Incredible views opened up at this point, might be the most scenic time of year with the aspen. > Not sure what this peak is < After this the trail was poorly marked, so I had to do some route finding. Also a slog on steep talus but the great views made up for it. Took 4 hours to reach the summit but less than 3 to descend. Panoramic summit views: Threatening storm clouds rolled in on the way down, combined with a forecast of snow around noon but it only drizzled for a bit. Looking back at the peak, good indicator of the terrain the second half of the hike: > < Aspen back down near the trailhead: This scene looks like it could be in the Canadian Rockies. Peak on the left with the snow is La Plata--closer than it looks. > < Mountains were covered in aspens. Pulled off on the drive back, slopes just carpeted in them: > <
