Thread to discuss all things sunshine related...
Miami supposedly gets 3154 hours of sunshine per you but I can say from personal experience that that number is bullshit.

This is the cloudiest time of the year here, by percentage -a pattern of clear mornings and convective buildup is to blame.

I assume Terre Haute probably receives 2270 hours annually in a normal measure system. From November 24th to January 17th, the solar noon stays lower than 30ยฐ above the horizon.

Locarno in Switzerland averages 200mm of rain per month in the high sun half-year for a 1900mm annual value. The rain days is less than 100 though and the recorded sunshine is 2200 which on its own is a lot for that rain amount. However, the sunshine percentage is listed at 56 which would mean it actually gets 2500 sunny hours (300h of which would be behind mountains). That's insane. There must be a lot of torrential, quick-to-clear rain there.

I've heard US sunshine numbers are 10 % exaggarated compared to other places in the world. So make that 2838 hours, does that sound better for Southside Sunshine State?

Idk...Naples, FL (about 110 miles from Miami for those unaware of florida's geography) averages only 2737 hours of sunshine annualy even with US sun recording methods.

Yeah, if I were to guess, Miami probably average 60-65% total sunshine throughout the year, which in terms of hours would be about 2628 through about 2847. The 2737 for Naples sounds about right.

Iโm guessing Rochester is similar to Toronto, perhaps slightly cloudier due to more rain and snow. Iโd guess around 2000-2050 hours instead of the 2300 with the US system.

Even tho they have similar sunshine hours, Valparaiso seemed wayyy sunnier than Binghamton. Binghamton can be blanketed by clouds for weeks at a time, whereas Valparaiso had amazingly sunny winters

This was a pretty cool graph of the sun hours in Sweden this autum. A few stick out. Karlstad and Borlรคnge had least sun hours in September! And Norrkรถping saw practically zero difference between the three months.

Only 2.9 hours of sun in the first 4 days of December, lol. It's being brought back up to average quickly, though.

^^^ Wow July 1994 was something special in parts of southern Sweden!
I know that month had really high sun totals but I never realised it was head and shoulders above any other year like that.

Just looking through the rankings of the sunniest years on record for England, four of the five sunniest winters on record have come in this century but none of the top five sunniest summers. www.metoffice.gov.uk/pub/data/weather/uk/climate/datasets/Sunshine/ranked/England.txtLook at December as well, nearly 90 years of data and 6 of the top 7 sunniest months have come in the past 20 years! No June from the past 20 years on the other hand even comes in the top ten, and no August comes in the top nine. I can't explain why?

Compared with the 10 years before that, London was recording more typical sunshine values, with a mix of sunny, average, and cloudy years.
London 1998: 1578.8 hrs 1999: 1813.6 hrs 2000: 1550.8 hrs 2001: 1746.8 hrs 2002: 1632.2 hrs 2003: 2003.5 hrs 2004: 1638.9 hrs 2005: 1677.5 hrs 2006: 1496.3 hrs 2007: 1528.6 hrs
Eastbourne: 1998: 1837.3 hrs 1999: 2039.8 hrs 2000: 1745.9 hrs 2001: 1952.8 hrs 2002: 1868.4 hrs 2003: 2161.5 hrs 2004: 1916.3 hrs 2005: 2023.3 hrs 2006: 1927.5 hrs 2007: 1932.0 hrs

I'm not sure if the recent dip in London's sunshine is just really localised though. Copied from what I once wrote on C-D :
