Saturday night (Sunday morning) my phone is now saying predicted low of 1f (-17 c). I wonder if we can make it below zero! The snow cover will help

Currently 10 F/-12 C with a windchill of -1 F/-18 C. Winds are gusting to 21 MPH. I have to say this is some of the coldest, most uncomfortable weather I've experienced in a while. Kind of dangerous out there tonight and I was a little concerned about it because my phone and car are acting up. Didn't want to be broken down on the side of the road without the ability to make an emergency call. Think it might be time for a new phone. I guess it had a good 5 year run.

Weird how 2010 was atrociously cold in both Europe and the US. I mean normally their weather is completely independent of eachother. 2010 was cold except in the northernmost parts of the country. One of the times where we got cold south, mild north; rather than an east/west divide. February had a big divide than January but January had a similar pattern along the east coast, the north-south temperature difference was much smaller than usual, with southern Virginia with the same average as Boston. usually in the winter there's a big chance in temperature going north. Here's a more typical February strange geo-potential height pattern with a ridge over Canada and the Arctic aloft and an upper level low ? [or just a cold airmass aloft?] over the Atlantic

midlevel temperatures are coldest tomorrow morning. Surface temperatures will be coldest Sunday morning as shown by this Mt. Washington are example. Mt. Washington will be coldest tomorrow morning strong wind bringing in the coldest arctic air. But the winds will prevent radiation cooling. By Sunday morning, the winds have mostly died down and there's been time for the coldest midlevel air to mix in. Coldest temperatures at this frost hollow valley location is Sunday morning

Friday ended up with a high/low of 5/0 (-15/-18 C).
The low was nothing special but the high was a daily record low. It was also the coldest high since January 7, 2014.

Flood is becoming an issue here. I don't remember our small rivers ever at such a high level. In the map to the left you can the the accumulated precipitation during the first 5 days of January. Some places already got more than 200 mm!

So, how many records have fallen in the States so far? lots of daily ones, but I don't think all-time records. Made it to the list of top 5 cold for sure by many measures but not the coldest. Another impressive image from coastal Massachusetts from the blizzard

The flood in Germany was briefly reported on our main 19:00 o'clock news, together with the cold and snowstorm in US (Boston shown).

9 F/-13 C with a windchill of -1 F/-18 C. Forecast low of -7 F/-22 C for tonight. I doubt it'll go that low, but we'll see. Major thaw coming up with highs near 50 F/10 C by the end of next week!

This morning's lows. With the strong wind, radiational cooling was difficult in the Northeast, and eastern Virginia and North Carolina was just as cold as @tarheelboi commented. Still a nasty windchill up here and today's max temperature

February 13 [see 0z Feb 14 had -30.9°C 850 mb. Cold blast was very intense but short-lived. Wind chills were a bit lower than this one. ECMWF reanalysis 850 hPa at 10:00 am. -26°C by Albany but -31°C by Vermont and New Hampshire for Friday it predicts silly temperatures: 9°C at 5000 feet over central New Hampshire

Those highs from NC to NYC are quite impressive. Only low 20s on the VA/NC border, and highs around 15 F in DC? Impressive! Also am I look at that right? A low of -7 F (-22 C) just NW of Norfolk? WOW.

WOW. Yes, that low likely happened in the great dismal swamp which is a frost hollow. There is a station right by lake drummond deep in the swamp and its average highs are just like Raleighs and actually a tad hotter in summer but its lows resemble somewhere like Charlottesville VA instead. Im still amazed at this cold, this is not run of the mill cold... this is 2 or 3 times a century type cold... as in 1985, 1989, and 1899... I highly doubt we see anything like this again for decades to come ( though obviously it getting this cold is independent of what happens next year, so still same chance of it happening anytime)... especially in eastern va which went subzero last year also... i just cant believe how cold it really got... i know plenty of folks who live in deep eastern nc... this is a place of spanish moss, black water cypress swamps, sabal palms, live oaks, magnolia, yaupon holly (only naturally caffeinated plant in US i believe), longleaf pine, and beautiful sounds... planning a fishing trip out to hatteras sometime within next month... plan on using the folks there and my own observations + contacts within the biologist community to assess any affects on plant life... i know im probably nerding out/weirding you out a bit but im an absolute ecology nerd and thats likely what I will study in college... if my passion for weather doesnt beat it out lol. Scary Fact: Some of the biggest bears are found in eastern nc, also a massive poulation out there. I know some folks who live out near swanquarter who have 9 bears on their property alone... a buddy of mine killed a big ol bear out there a couple months back. Here is an article from a man who paddled all through eastern nc. He actually found spanish moss well within Raleigh but as he said it was errant.. i went to the area he spoke of last week by old milburnie dam which has been taken down now and didnt find any. theborderlife.com/Neuse-River-Odessey.phpI cant wait till folks from the UK are posting some rare cold... tired of being the only folks in this fun... b87 watch out

And one local put up a sign "this bear crosses often" to help protect the bear from stupid drivers. I had a bear walk past my bedroom window a few years ago. Didn't get a chance to photograph. And no, it wasn't rural, houses are close together with some small apartment buildings
