Scary Fact: Some of the biggest bears are found in eastern nc, also a massive poulation out there. I know some folks who live out near swanquarter who have 9 bears on their property alone... a buddy of mine killed a big ol bear out there a couple months back. my town had to ban feeding bears because too many people it was fun to do. And one local put up a sign "this bear crosses often" to help protect the bear from stupid drivers. I had a bear walk past my bedroom window a few years ago. Didn't get a chance to photograph. And no, it wasn't rural, houses are close together with some small apartment buildings You guys have scary big bears! Largest bears are found up north. I havent had the pleasure of running into a bear yet lol. Come March though many young male bears will be on the move and I wouldnt be surprised if a couple came by my area like they did a few years back. We had a women who lived deep in the swamps live with bears... she had them sleep with her in the trailer... eventually she was eaten by them. The likely story is that she wasnt attacked but went off in the woods to visit the bears, had a heart attack or stroke and died, then was eaten. www.coastalreview.org/2015/03/bear-lady-mysterious-life-death/

Group of five guys might be able to scare off a bear. Running might make a bear more likely to think you might be worth chasing. Most bears are harmless but very rarely, not.

impressive snow depths in interior lapland. already 120cm in jokkmokk. looked back, and there has never been so much snow there so early in the winter. in fact, the absolute max depth has only been above 120cm two times - in 1965 and 2013. records go back to 1949.

If we celebrated Orthodox Christmas instead (i.e., today, January 7) this would be the second consecutive white Christmas. Last year, on January 7, we got several inches of a snow. It was actually out largest snowstorm of the season last year, followed by some extreme cold that kept the snow cover pretty stable for the next few days.

all the snow on the ground and chilled ground, well deep frozen ground means it'll be harder to reach warm temperatures. Forecasts might need to adjust their forecast downward

Yesterday had a high of just 4 (-15.6 C).
It was not a daily record, but it was the coldest high since January 15, 2004.
It was also the coldest high for January 6th since 1896.

Central Park recorded the second coldest high on record (13F) dating back to 1871!!! Last time we had a colder high on this date, Grover Cleveland was our president, Ottoman Empire was still alive, and Congo Free State was an actual thing
LaGuardia set a record yesterday for the coldest high (15F), as well as tied the record for the coldest low (8F)

We dropped down to 5F (-15C) but seems like it's nothing compared to the surrounding areas

looks a bit different from the beaches alex992 is used to That's pretty fucking cool! Reminds me of when I went to Massachusetts/New Hampshire in late December 2009 and we were staying in Worcester at a motel by the ocean, and everything was frozen solid and there was a shit ton of snow on the ground right to the beach....wicked cool. I actually have some pics from that.

Would be cool to see your photos of wherever that might be
