www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-42939644Moscow has seen its heaviest snowfall in a day since records began, with more than 2,000 trees brought down and air travel disrupted, officials say. More than half the monthly average snow - 38cm (15 inches) - fell on Saturday, beating the previous record from 1957. 2000 trees brought down because of 38cm of snow? Visby got 38cm of snow in a day - last November.

My grandparents are telling me it's very bad, they've never seen this much snow before. Hopefully this cold wave comes to an end before there are any casualties

Looks like the inland regions are receiving all of the cold; it is rather mild on the Northern coastline. Sleet and potential snow showers as of now.

The latest ECMWF run has substantial snow for the western suburbs and the adjacent countryside thanks to a stagnating occluded front. Today's noon emagram for the SW suburbs: Current radar:

Yeah, as of 22:00 monday it's up to 6C in Tromsø and 3C in Hammerfest, while -15C inland in Kautokeino. One more mild day along the coast tomorrow, then down to ca 0C to -7C.

meanwhile another ridge is building along coastal California. Redding reached 78°F again. Further south: San Francisco reading appears to be the airport station, downtown a couple degrees colder. Reached 75°F (24°C), 74°F yesterday. Must feel a bit odd with the low sun angle. Meanwhile Eureka gets stuck with cool ocean air, didn't break 60°F

temperatures this afternoon post-cold front. Cold, but hanging in around freezing. Binghamton otoh. Down to 19°F and a bit of a breeze. Hmm. Might actually get snow rather than rain Wednesday!

It has now been over a month (32 days) since Vancouver last recorded a freeze. The average low for the period hovers around 0C. Not sure if we've ever gone longer in winter without a freeze. Even the epic torch winter of '14-15 had various freezes in Jan and Feb. Also, we're now up to 22 consecutive days with rain.

I don't have any hope of the PV displacement actually helping out the west; winter never really even started here. Been a common theme these past few years.

Seems this cold spell is going to end on Friday... How often do you see forecasts like this for your location?

Rainfall boosted and prolonged by a large power station near Cologne (labeled by the red plus). The other shower to the northeast moves with the wind but the one starting at the power station remains stationary.

^^ Interesting stat. I wonder when Norway last had a national ice day, if it has happened at all. It has now been over a month (32 days) since Vancouver last recorded a freeze. The average low for the period hovers around 0C. Not sure if we've ever gone longer in winter without a freeze. Even the epic torch winter of '14-15 had various freezes in Jan and Feb. I feel for you, we just went through a 37-day long freeze-free streak in Paris, straddling over December, January and February.

a national ice day in sweden today. the first since jan 2016. malmö was warmest with -0.3C number of national ice days per winter in sweden since 1949/1950 Is Malmö the least likely place in Sweden to get ice days or are there any offshore islands I don't know about? rozenn, I'd suspect Norway has certainly had nationwide ice days before considering it has almost happened in Britain: on 12 January 1987 the warmest place was on the Isle of Lewis (in the Hebrides) at 0.1C. As far as I'm aware that's the only time in recorded history when the Scilly Isles stayed below freezing all day. The problem for us is the outermost islands: the coldest weather in the Scillies comes from easterlies, the coldest weather in the Hebrides comes from northerlies, and both places need abnormally strong cold snaps coming from the right direction to even get close to getting ice days. As for here though, we had an ice day today with a high of -0.2C, our third of the winter after nearly five whole years when the coldest maximum was -0.1C
