Spoiled for talent back in 1984.

Here's some more cheesy old Christmas songs which no Christmas in this country would be complete without hearing 200 times - I don't know how well known these songs are abroad but the first one still gets played so often that I read somewhere that the guy who wrote it gets paid something like £500k in royalties every time December comes around

I guess the royalties are worth giving up your dignity. Only ones I've heard are Paul McCartney and Wham. Are the Carpenters popular abroad? They get a lot of airplay here around Christmas. Used to be popular year round before easy listening/adult contemporary went out of style.

Another classic Christmas song over here which I forgot about is this Irish one: It's got New York in the title but it's not actually well known in the US, is that right? I remember reading about some American hearing it for the first time and being really shocked at the line "You scumbag you maggot, you cheap lousy !" being in one of our best-loved Christmas songs lol

I was just about to post the Fairytale of New York, definitely one of the top three Christmas songs. It regularly comes top of polls in the UK for being the most popular Christmas song.

There was a campaign to make it Christmas number one this year, but didn't work.

I knew that actually, and "Merry Christmas Everyone" by Shakin' Stevens was originally meant to be released the same year as those two songs in 1984, but he saw what he was up against and thought it would make more sense to wait another year to release it to have a better chance of reaching number one. He was right

Do They Know It's Christmas the original version sounded amazing. The lyrics were very simplistic but the sound was beautiful

This is a nice song from an Anglo-American band. Although I think they weren't well known in the US?
