Winter +2, summer ±0.
This does unfortunately not account for diurnal ranges or deviations from the mean, but I think it's a great idea nontheless.

for those of you weren't around on CityData in 2012 dhdh made a neat graph plotting everyone's ideal climate by average summer and winter preferences. The chart is gone, maybe he deleted his image account. I'd like to recreate and see what the current forum is like. Obviously a 2-D chart isn't enough to describe everyone's preferences exactly, but it can show who are the heat lovers/cold lover/ mild/continental. And don't think everyone knows each others preferences. I'd like to use the same setup and rules that dhdh created so reposting his. Here's the old link: www.city-data.com/forum/weather/1473088-lets-try-experiment.htmlEdit: most regulars have responded, the chart has gotten rather full! Reminder that the numbers people were supposed to respond were by monthly means not maxima or minima. Ariete and WherestheDefense had the same response. AJ and Urania also chose the same ideal. I would be curious to see where each of us appears on a cold/warmth enjoyment chart, say, with cold enjoyment on the horizontal axis and warmth enjoyment on the vertical axis, for example. This way we can have a single graphical representation of everyone's tastes !
I calculated some averages from global cities around the world and came up with a +5.2°C average in winter and +22.5°C in summer. Hence, I will use them as my "0" values, i.e. if they represent your ideal winter and summer you will be considered as "perfectly in the middle" of the chart. If you like either cooler or warmer summers or winters, you will move on the relevant axis.
People in the upper right corner are those who tend to prefer hot climates (Hong Kong, Mumbai...) i.e. warmer winters, hotter summers than "average"
In the upper left, are those who like extreme and continental climates (Chicago, Beijing...) i.e. colder winter, hotter summers than "average"
In the lower left, are those who like cold climates, e.g. Reykjavik, Anchorage i.e. colder winter, cooler summers than "average"
In the lower right, those who like very mild climates, e.g. Bogota i.e. warmer winter, cooler summers than "average"
So how can you express your preferences? This is the scale I worked out after thinking of a distribution with roughly 50% either way :
Winter scale :
+10 if you want your coldest month to be ABOVE 24°C - on 24 hrs averages +9 if you want your coldest month to be BELOW 24°C +8 for coldest month BELOW 22°C +7 : Below 20°C +6 : Below 18°C +5 : Below 16°C +4 : Below 14°C +3 : Below 12°C +2 : Below 10°C +1 : Below 8°C 0 : Below 6°C -1 : Below 4°C -2 : Below 2°C -3 : Below 0°C -4 : Below -2°C -5 : Below -4°C -6 : Below -6°C -7 : Below -8°C -8 : Below -10°C -9 : Below -12°C -10 : Below -14°C
Summer scale :
+10 : if you want your warmest month to be ABOVE 32°C - on 24 hour averages +9 : if you want your warmest month to be BELOW 32°C +8 : warmest month BELOW 31°C +7 : Below 30°C +6 : Below 29°C +5 : Below 28°C +4 : Below 27°C +3 : Below 26°C +2 : Below 25°C +1 : Below 24°C 0 : Below 23°C -1 : Below 22°C -2 : Below 21°C -3 : Below 20°C -4 : Below 19°C -5 : Below 18°C -6 : Below 17°C -7 : Below 16°C -8 : Below 15°C -9 : Below 14°C -10 : Below 13°C
Example : if your dream climate is London : 5.2°C in winter; 18.7°C in summer
so on the scale, it translates as 0 in winter and -4 in summer. My preference would be: Winter: Below -10C Summer: Below 18C

nei can you mark me down as winter 0, but keep summer as =-4? I think winter=-1= amsterdam, right? That would be a bit chilly for me.... Winter=0 would be ideal (closer to 4C for the coldest month and 6C for the mildest...)

I think I misread the summer score as being highs, not averages. I'll change my summer score to -6 based on that. Winter stays at -10.

updated the OP with a new chart nei Oh no! You forgot to move me over to winter 0... Winter -1 isn't horrible, but a touch chilly... To be fair I am between 0 and -1... would prefer a winter avg minimum month around 4C.... a smidgen chillier than cadeau.. I don't care about summer -3 or -4 though...

With today's chart, the average is +0.1, -1.2. So an average of 23C in summer and 3C in winter. i.imgur.com/HVJGqqv.gifAlex, Candle, Hiromant, and Shalop are off the chart for winter. If their actual averages are included winter would be a bit colder. Shalop would probably bring the average down 1 full point. And the other three, maybe 1 more. 23C/0C maybe? Edit: for tij the median is +0, -1. 23C in summer and 4C in winter.

I'm going to make a new updated chart tonight or tomorrow. A couple of new posters haven't responded yet; Speagles84 omegaraptor . And I want to see Beercules finally post his numbers. Not just to have a point for everyone but I'm honestly just curious what his ideal is Bumping this thread, Beercules said on the shoutbox that his ideal climate is basically has winters of Tucson and summers of Phoenix with 50 thunderstorms a year, thus his ideal averages would be +10 (actually +12) (summer), and +2 (winter). As for my own ideal averages: Summer: +6 Winter: +3
