I'm sure we've all noticed the decline in activity on this forum in the past few weeks, and yesterday was the least active day so far with only 98 new posts. No stats for the shoutbox of course but I can definitely sense that getting quieter as well. We've got nearly everybody from City-Data who's likely to come and there's no sign of anybody coming in from elsewhere.
So what next, do we keep this forum the way it is as just our thing and let it gradually die out whenever people stop wanting to post on here, or do we open it up to the public with all that would involve? I think we're alright for the moment but if 100 posts/day and a shoutbox that's dead half the time becomes the norm we're going to have to answer that question at some point.

Well us dedicated folk (such as myself) will be continuing to post here, and I liked the idea of recruiting some members off other weather forums.

I won't stop posting here. I can't really understand the decrease in activity tbh, could just be a phase. I do think there's certain posters who need to make more of an effort in actually posting on threads themselves, as opposed to just spamming the shoutbox, but whatever.

Well at least 10 or 12 of us don't have City-Data accounts to go back to, but the real question is how quiet a forum are we as a group willing to put up with to keep posting here, is it more important for this forum to be ours or for it to be thriving? Recruiting people from elsewhere sounds like a plan in theory, but nobody's mentioned anybody so far

Well let's make 70 posts in this thread the next 24 hours and discuss the crisis with posts posts posts posts Joking aside, Monday has always been a slow posting day. There have been no trolling raids for the last few weeks either and those bursts could sometimes cause 80-100 posts within a couple of hours in the trolling thread alone. Also, we're still getting more posts than City-Data and the next breakdown when we receive 38 k posts will undoubtedly show that. Would it be feasible to keep the banned list intact even if the forum got public?

That's the thing, it would take more effort to keep alone off the forum than I'd be willing to put in - there'd be nothing to stop the shoutbox from being trolled 24/7 as well as far as I can tell.
We could at least keep the City-Data talk section private just for us, but even that's not so simple - I looked into it and the simplest way would be to add you all to a new group (the same way JG and Lommo are in the 'Moderators' group) and keep the C-D talk section restricted to that group, but that would mean you'd all have the name of the group where Senior Member etc is now, any new people would get curious why they don't have the same word under their username.

A quiet week or two, one especially quiet day and suddenly the forum is dying? Quite the hyperbole. I suggest we monitor the situation for a month before we make dramatic conclusions. Secondly, being quiet is kind of a circle. No new posts = no replies to new posts.
Keep it as it is for now. I kind of like the intimate feeling here. If this was an open forum, I would be more conservative in what I'm willing to share.

Oh we're fine as things are right now, I started this thread to gather people's thoughts on how opening this forum up could work and at what point it would be worth it, if any. There's no way I'd do something as drastic as opening it up without putting it to a vote.

You could have guests be able to view and maybe post but no shoutbox privileges. But how would new users come? They’re not going to come via google search; and new users would need to be watched to make sure they’re not dribbling morons. One benefit of opening up the forum is it looks weird to be in tied to a private weather forum, many would to see what they’re registering for

I don't think J-tard would honestly want to use this forum under his real persona now that he knows just how unpopular he is. I think it's most likely Mr Dunno, Y-man and Wilko would come around and those we could handle quite easily and arbitrarily ban if they overstepped any lines. In fact I think Wilko's shouting matches would be quite entertaining and drive traffic to be honest That being said, I'm very much against opening this place up at the moment.

People are way more likely to type "world weather forum" into Google than the former. Just sayin'!

I don't see what the panic is about myself. Sure, the shoutbox can be quiet for long periods, but someone will usually say something after 4-5 hours. Unless it's dead for a whole day, then we should be in crisis.

I don't think there's any active Finnish weather forum out there, so I'm quite useless in possible recruiting.
edit: and there's more than just post count. A post with 10 pictures and commentary is much more valuable than 5 posts of "I just farted".

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiit. No. Literal quote "Why do high-pressure systems in Western Russia make the winds come here"? Makes Easthomo seem like a clever chap... I could scan the place in search for non-droolers though and see if I can find a needle in the haystack
