In here today we've got about 9.5 mm of rain, I haven't heard any thunder but in some moments it looked like a quite intense rain shower. In warmer years than this it would not be so strange to see some thunderstorm in this period of the year actually. On the other hand, the rain pattern during the previous months was really weird in comparison with the norm (really dry autumn and a really rainy January, locally involving thunderstorms too) so the rainy days of the last couple of weeks are among the most seasonal weather conditions I've seen in the last 6 months or so. You seem to have quite many days with heavy rainfall around your place; I guess the Alps have a lot to do with it because in other locations such as Como and Lugano there's high rainfall year round, whereas your area seems to be very on/off; very few drizzly days?

Thunderstorms forecasted for the overnight hours, we shall see. It’d be our second thunderstorm day of the year (sad) after having thunder snow in March.

Verbania and the valley just north of it is really rainy too, and some areas of northern Apennines as well. Precipitation map of ItalyThe rain pattern depends on both the most likely direction for humid air masses and on the position of relieves, and my place is in a position in which neither of these factors favour large amounts of precipitations. Generally speaking the rainiest areas correspond to the spots in which humid air masses meet the first relieves. The most of the water in the air mass condensates and falls as rain in this first phase, so the valleys behind the first mountain range are actually quite dry and get less intense precipitations. This is quite evident looking at the valleys around Trentino/Südtirol, Aosta Valley or also my valley. Anyway, generally we don't have many drizzle days nor cloudy days in which it looks like it's going to rain (but it doesn't), so we don't have so many rainy days in general. Also today rain doesn't seem so heavy overall (at least not in here).

Looking at the map, what strikes me is that the rain shadow effect behind the Northern Appenines appears to be minimal, whereas in Apulia and down south it does appear to exist, at least to a degree. Are those really wet areas strictly mountain tops? They must be proper snowouts in winter and I reckon quite a bit of glaciers with heavy summer rainfall in Friuli, considering it's not all that hot in the lowland during shoulder seasons? Also, do the Ligurian Mountains "trap" Genoa in a similar way as the Norwegian Mountains trap Bergen into raining much more than it otherwise would?

Big storm coming: "Bangkok and neighbouring provinces will bear the brunt for at least two days -- Friday and Saturday -- before southern provinces are next in turn to be soaked around early next week, the department said. Besides widespread rainfall, which will be heavy in some areas, fierce winds, hail storms and lightning strikes are likely" m.bangkokpost.com/news/general/1440774/tropical-storm-set-to-lash-nationShould provide something of interest. Luckily I'll be on holiday, so I won't be inconvenienced by flooding if it occurs.

Days with thunder so far in 2018:
January: 3 February: 4 March: 7 April: 5
Storms lately have tended to come at night. It seems that storms with frontal systems often develop in Texas during the afternoon, then arrive here during the overnight hours, and move through states to the east the following day.

Thunderstorms on and off since yesterday evening. Really intense dark clouds just as the sun was setting. Less than ten seconds between flashes but little thunder. More thunder this morning but less frequent.
10-30 mm last night. Downtown had 30-40 mm this morning but there was little rain at DMK. Still raining moderately at noon. I think we could very well be seeing over 100 mm from this event in parts. 😃
Plus there's the potential to set a new record low high temp today as we're still on 25 C at noon.

Interesting radar for 1 May over Östergötland County, some 100 km west of me there seems to be a highly unseasonal thunderstorm going at the moment. No wonder why there's that thunderous feeling in the air even here with all those strikes...

Vaisala's 2013-2017 lightning stroke density map. Looks like a large part of the U.S. was quite active, especially the Gulf coast and Plains. I'm guessing central Africa was less active than prior years.

11 thunder days last month and already five so far this month 👍
Had a nice display of cloud to ground lightning on the horizon this morning. We've had 30-100 mm of rain around the city to date this month.

First thunderstorm of the year is on its way to Saskatoon right now. I think the bigger cells are gonna miss us but should still be an interesting night either way. I can see pretty frequent flashing in the distance to the south and southwest right now.

Some pretty impressive thunderstorms in my area. Of course not getting anything from them as they formed nearby then moved away. Saw nice lightning strikes.

We've had a bunch of storm cells popping through the province the last couple days but none of them have made their way to Saskatoon. I did see flashing in the clouds far to the south yesterday evening.

Epic thunderstorm making its way over Saskatoon from the west right now, first proper one of the season! Multiple lightning flashes per second, torrential rain, high winds, and it's only getting started!

Had a pretty strong convective t-storm this evening! I ended up with 1.78" of rain. Heard that some hail fell in my neighborhood, but I wasn't home to see it.
